The Gamecube controller is the most comfortable pad I've ever used. I never had any trouble with it but most people hated the nipple-like C-stick, overall though, the analogue sticks on that pad have yet to be bettered.

I really like the 360 S controller with the black analogues+dpad and the chrome guide button:

It was designed for a time when kids used to play their games on knackered old black and white portable TV's, in a spare room the size of a shoebox, really. If you couldn't reach the pause button from where you were sitting, you were too posh to own a Master System.

That does look rather nice with the black analogue sticks. @360S controller.

It's not going to fix anything Rik, it's the same mechanism!

Overall - Gamecube is the best IMO. Perfect in every single way, joy to use.

Shite triggers
That Z button placement
Nipple c stick is crap

far from perfect.

That can't be right. I first used the PS1 dual analog controller on G Police and Colony Wars, long before Ape Escape was released.

For d-pad the Saturn wins hands down. For everything else it's the 360 joypad all the way baby!

Analogue sticks were employed in the home ages ago. Hell, the Vectrex had them built in.

The 360 pad is probably my favourite at the moment, but that'll be because I'm used to it. The GC pad certainly has is charms and the dpad is always superior on a Ninty controller. I just don't get on with Sony's effort at all - it just doesn't feel comfortable at all.

360 controller without a doubt. The only way it could be improved would be with a built in rechargeable battery as standard using a standard micro usb-usb cable to charge and if the joysticks had the octogonal plastic case bit like on the Gamecube controller. Most games don't make much use of the d-pad but a better version of it would make it better.

Sony controllers are so bad, too small, left joystick in wrong place, rubbish triggers, I actually liked the concept design for the banana controller a few years ago cause it looked easier to hold.

I love the shape of the PlayStation pad, always have done. However some fundamental changes need to be made to it. I can understand not wanting to rock the boat in terms of design because clearly most of the audience love it, but what is currently on it has to change.

3 step plan

  • Bring back the concave analogue sticks.
  • Tighten the sticks, removing the dead zone.
  • Steal the 360's triggers.

Sorted.

Why do people want a built in battery? Surely replaceable batteries are a better choice? Have one charging, while the other one is in use. Even better if you can choose between regular batteries or a battery pack.

This!

It's great being able to change over your batteries with a fresh, pre-charged pair when my current ones finally run out. I've been using my wireless 360 pad since launch (5 years) and I'm sure if I was using a wireless dual shock the internal battery would have kicked the bucket/not hold as much charge a long time ago. Replaceable batteries for the win! \o/
