I would have said Gamecube, now that I'm older it feels a bit small for me, and the C-stick is pretty terrible.

Anyone who says any of the Dual Shocks:

If it had rumble, it wouldn't be lighter.

The 360 and Gamecube controller are both part of the same family. Each has two non-symmetrical analogue sticks. But the Gamecube controller is a contender for the most comfortable ever.

Triggers were shite on FPS games through.

That's what I was trying to say. If the only difference was weight then Sixaxis > DS3 as it is lighter, and lighter = better.

Best would be a franken-pad made up of:

360 layout
360 or GC ergonomics
GC analogue stick (left in both positions)
SNES buttons
Dreamcast triggers
Dualshock rumble
Dualshock 3 battery

I think.

The 360 pad would be perfect if it wasn't for the d-pad but ergonomically it's still the best by a mile. The Saturn pad is probably my favourite traditional controller due to the excellent d-pad.

You don't buy a Gamecube to play FPS games.

The Z button worked alright as a fire button with FPSes.

I can't actually remember a Gamecube FPS I actually played, though.

Actually, does Jedi Knight 3: Jedi Outcast count as an FPS? That was swish.

On the GC?

Anyway, the 360 controller for me. Leagues ahead of everything else (I've yet to use a Master System or Saturn controller, though they both look gooseberry fool).

The 360 pad is, for me, by some distance the best pad out there, followed by the Gamecube (even though going back to it feels very odd these days!).

I'm also registering a vote for the Quickshot II Turbo! It had microswitches! Microswitches!

I called off his players' names as they came marching up the steps behind him....All nice guys. They'll finish last. Nice guys. Finish last.

I think I'd go with this, except I used one recently and it felt a bit weird. I think it's when you're used to other controllers, going back to one - even if it's one you really liked - feels alien at first.

It's hard to judge some of the older ones fairly because things have changed so much, and it's not really fair to say, for example, that the SNES pad is the best of all-time. I'd personally say that's the best of the older ones. I do really like the nunchuk and Wii remote, though. The 360 controller, too, but neither is perfect.

If the nunchuk was a little bit heavier, had the ridges of the GameCube's analogue stick and was untethered, I think the Wii would have the best controller (though again, the remote would be lacking a second analogue stick which is much missed on some games, as well as some larger and better-placed buttons other than the A and B (which are wonderful, by the way - the B trigger beats Move's slightly spongy one by a distance).

The 360 pad is pretty great, but I'm not 100% sold on the bumpers for all games - they're great for some titles but not others - and the d-pad is obviously crap.

Got a feeling that come the next generation someone will absolutely nail it. The perfect pad.

For 2D games, I really like both the SNES and Mega Drive controllers. The original three button MD pad in particular is a joy to use, six button one is also very good (and obviously more versatile) but I prefer the shape and size of the former.

For 3D games? It does depend largely, I think the remote+nunchuk is very comfortable (does anyone else cross their arms when using it?) but obviously not ideal for certain genres. Gamecube pad is excellent as long as games are designed for it, but the face button layout is a little odd, and the d-pad is borderline unusable...it's very comfortable though. I do like the 360 controller quite a bit, but the LB/RB buttons have never felt right to me and I'll agree on the d-pad complaints. I've never liked any of the Playstation pads to be honest, shape has never sat well with me and I really can't stand the segregated d-pad design. I also prefer letters for identifying buttons as opposed to the shapes.

It annoys me that third party manufacturers still don't deliver standard pads as good as what consoles launch with. Companies like Logitech, Mad Catz/Saitek, Razer etc. seem perfectly capable of selling high quality gear to PC gamers but don't seem to really bother trying when it comes to console gamers.
We've seen over the last few years with stuff like fightpads, arcade sticks, racing wheels etc. that there exists a market among enthusiast gamers (I prefer enthusiast to "hardcore") for quality peripherals and that people will pay a premium price for premium products but that market isn't being served all that well.

I recently got the CoD;BLOPS pad for the PS3 and while there are some areas where it is far superior to the standard dual shock 3 there are still too many drawbacks to the controller for me to recommend it over a the DS3. Maybe they can tweak the design for next years Call of Duty and nail it but I won't get my hopes up.
