I am often asked if the effort invested in pandemic preparedness is a waste of resources. Has public health cried “wolf” too often and too loudly?

Not at all. Pandemics are recurring events. We do not know whether the H5N1 virus will cause the next pandemic.

But we do know this: the world will experience another influenza pandemic, sooner or later.

Nor were the 11,000 deaths from the Ebola epidemic.

That’s true, we are in danger of underestimating the future pandemic that will kill us all.

81 deaths.

It doesn’t sound like it’s going to kill us all.

I am sure these statistics, provided by the government of China, are 100% accurate and would never be downplayed just to avoid a situation where industry or tourism is hurt. Now I don't think we're all going to turn into zombies but it's probably at least somewhat worse.

The only silver lining here is that since this disease is made in China it will probably just stop working after like 2 weeks.

I'm getting very vague, subtle hints in this thread suggesting Rightey doesn't like the Chinese...

Lol, are you seriously trying to conflate a joke about the quality of Chinese products with racism?

Try harder.

China:

Literally just threw the bat into the soup bowl. At least skin the thing first!

This is completely unconfirmed that this is the cause. People have been eating bat in China afaik for hundreds of years - people would've had it by now if it was the cause.

I thought it started in their disgusting and unsanitary wet markets?

All the early victims had contact with the Wuhan wet market so the theory is they picked it up from the animals originally and it evolved to be able to spread from person to person.

Stop trolling. They're not generally Chinese products though, the point stands.

It's not about whether you are racist, it's that lazy jokes repeated ad nausea institute and abet racist ideas in others.

What I'm saying is your joke is rubbish and at least as much about China as the virus that has sprung up there, which isn't far away from saying lol Indian people wipe poop with their hands and don't use real toilets, of course there's disease there. People don't have to laugh at bad jokes mate. People don't just decide to let endemic viruses occur, implying they are stupid and careless people is wrong.

It can and will happen in other parts of the world, indeed it has. You also have other factors like population density which is so far removed from a people's identity it's absurd to ignore those factors and indeed indirectly conflate those with the people as a whole being careless in some way.

I'd be willing to bet vaste swathes of Chinese people make a very deliberate and sensible decision not to purchase from wet markets or choose carefully where they eat, or eat their own produce, especially in the more remote areas of China or those actually with Internet access you see posting of their high life in Instagram, which is but a veil of their experience. Yet you cannot blame people (I'm not saying you are) for falling victim in a food chain connected to that practice which is obviously stupid. But it's the practice not the people.

Hopefully you don't actually need to be schooled in that but whatevs I happen to feel a bit more strongly about that made in China crap which is very much casual racism imo so I'll knock it on the head.
