That's a weird example to choose. The GSK was such a big deal because he operated for over a decade in different areas, committing numerous burglaries, dozens of rapes before moving onto murder whilst evading capture the entire time. He'd never have been caught if not for a familial DNA match.

But without the GSK moniker devised by Michelle McNamara, the media would never have caught on like they did, and public awareness of the killer would've remained lower.

The biggest “name” killers in America would be Ted Bundy, Jeffrey Dahmer and John Wayne Gacy.

In the UK we have Jack the Ripper and the Yorkshire ripper. But Fred West and Ian Huntley are just as well known.

A snappy name isn’t everything.

There are many serial killers who aren't well known, though. Would GSK be known outside California if he had remained the East Area Rapist? Hardly.

McNamara knew the power of a good name.

The crimes and/or the story are what makes the killer well known. GSK isn’t actually as well known as you’re making out, but the story around him makes it interesting. A serial killing cop who was discovered through a family DNA database? That’s a story.

The nicknames help recognition but there are many serial killers with nicknames who are barely known.

All the shops have run out bog roll.

Worst. Panic. Ever.

We’re also running low of condoms because, no lie, people are buying them to put on their fingers to press lift buttons.

Still I’ve been teaching from home for a month now.

I've never heard of GSK. The only initialised killer I think I'm aware of is BTK and then that's only thanks to Mindhunter!

I only know of GSK because of the All Killa No Filla podcast.

Sorry did I derail the Coronavirus topic by talking about the actual virus with an on-the-ground insight rather than a BLT.

Sorry, I thought you were just bragging that you’ve used every condom in Hong Kong.

Meant to be going Phuket on 17th March and I then have the Manchester marathon on April 4th but if I follow goverment advice I should be self isolating for 14 days when I return but if I cancel the holiday I will lose almost £2k

I have insurance and booked last year before the virus existed but this is causing me some internal stress

Double check your insurance, lots of them don't cover disease outbreak or disinclination to travel through fear of contracting a disease.

Standard winter influenza kills hundreds of thousands people worldwide each year. Don't worry about coronavirus.

Run in a hazmat suit. You're self isolated and you might get extra money for charity.

Course you might also die if it's a warm April.

I am not sure I would trust the advice of somebody with the username "Remember you must die".

This self isolation advice is dangerous. Absolutely no way would my company accept it if I came back from an infected region and said I had to self isolate for 14 days. I'd have to take unpaid leave which I couldn't afford to do. I bet a lot of people will be in that situation, and will have to break self isolation because they won't have any other choice.

It needs some proper guidance and maybe an assurance that GPs will issue sick notes, and that sick pay should be provided.

We've destroyed sick pay in many industries and made things horribly difficult in the others (hello Bradford!). An Uber driver can't take a day off, let alone 14. Even in the NHS itself there are many people working who are unable to take sick leave.

Right wing media stories and right wing politicians have led us to this situation. And it isn't going to get better, coronavirus probably won't be the disease that kills us all, but one will come along eventually and we will all be forced out to spread it. Good luck spending your money when we're all dying of a superflu you rich banana splits.

It's been revealed that someone with the virus travelled to the same city about 20 minutes from me on a business trip.

Knowing Japan, the trip will have likely been something that could have been done on the internet or on the phone. I bet the guy also stoically kept going to work when he was ill as he didn't want to let the side down.

First I get killed in AYAW and now in real life too.

Most people should be eligible for Statutory Sick Pay, but that doesn't really cover you for much in terms of the financial side of things. I think the 14 day self isolation is a sensible precaution from a medial perspective but it is definitely easier said that done.

We've had a guy at work who is in to his second week of it now after he travelled out to Thailand recently. Pretty sure he's basically just been at home watching gooseberry fool loads of Netflix.

I get the impression you’re more pissed off about AYAW than the coming viral apocalypse.
