One of my students missed my lecture because she was delayed flying home from somewhere with cases of coronavirus and she's asked for a tutorial to cover the content. RIP me.

I don't think I've ever had the flu and I know I haven't had the jab.
Maybe I'm just lucky.

I'm in Doha airport right now and there are a lot of international flights from China. And a lot of people wearing masks, I can't imagine the masks do anything. I'll be fine.

Someone made a web map so you can watch the outbreak unfold (almost) live...

Well, a university made it. That's a wonderful piece of data dashboard design. Why can't more top educational establishments get to design the Internet and make information useful and accessible.

It even runs on an iPad 2 without constantly hanging and crashing. I like how you can expand the panels and there's zero pointless animation.

That's ESRI's arcgis online API, think google maps but more expensive to license. This is definitely the best implementation I've seen of it, it's also probably running on an up to date version as I don't remember ever seeing those re-sizeable info boxes in other applications, although the last time I used it was a few years ago.

The first person who turns up at work with this and proudly announces they're 'soldiering on!' Is getting a chair to the face. Just before Christmas there was a handful of people who think they're heroes for coming in for pointless meetings when they should have been in bed. The strawberry floaters even went around to areas of the building that they never normally go to, just to cough and splutter over anyone in eye sight and drive home just how dedicated and brave they are for coming in. The result being that every single person in our building was properly ill over Christmas, and for a good couple of weeks after :|

When this hits our area I'm working from home as much as possible.

Here in town, if anyone so much as gets a slight sniffle, they sneeze and cough straight out into the air without even making an attempt to put a hand to their face.

If the bug reaches here then no one will stand a chance.

There's a work hero here at the moment. Every time she gets up she is letting out a very loud sigh and limping around making "oh I am in so much pain" moaning noises. I assume she has hurt her leg but I don't care enough to ask what happened, especially because it is bloody clear she wants people to ask her.

Here in Japan, they've just flew back 200 Japanese citizens from Wuhan and are telling them to monitor themselves carefuy for symptoms for 2 weeks.

Seems a foolproof plan.

Bring back 200 people from the most crisis-hit, infected area. Make this monitor completely reliant on themselves. And bring them back to a culture which literally has a word for death through overworking, ensuring they even if they are ill, they'll just "ganbare" and go to work anyway.

Oh, and let's not forget how horrifically dense their cities are in terms of population. And how crowded their trains and subways are. How many people at just rammed in everywhere.

But don't worry! Most people wear masks! Nothing can go wrong, despite these not being air tight and seemingly just encourage people to cough and splutter all the more. I think some people basically just cough open mouthed and sneeze in the same mask all day.

But hey, don't worry! At least all the public bath rooms have warm tap water and an abundance of driers! Oh wait, no, it's all cold, often with no dryer or paper towels. Instead people carry a hand towel around all day, which is bound to be nice and clean come 10pm after a whole day's use. That's if they even wash their hands...

Can't help but think there's always a reason these start off in Asia. The markets of South East Asia and the more rural areas can't help, but the sheer population density in Asian cities just make them a hot bed for infection.

Then you have weird ways of prevention infection which don't really make sense. Like how in Japan they open up all the windows to "change the air" or think sleeping with something warm on your stomach helps.

Seriously how bad is the Bedford Score where you work? I've never known any issues with it at our place.

If you are having zero problems then it sounds like the Bedford score is much better than the Bradford one. :x

It’s pretty bad here. They’ve linked the score to bonuses and rewards, just 2 or 3 absences in a year will mean you get a verbal warning and make you ineligible for any form of bonus for a calendar year. If you then go beyond that, then you don’t get a pay rise for a year and receive a written warning.

So a migraine in April followed by a stomach bug in November will mean you are probably on a verbal warning with no chance of any rewards for a year. Pick up the Coronavirus in January and you will probably risk going in to avoid the written warning and lack of pay rise that would result.

Freudian slip :D

Ok that does sound pretty gooseberry fool. We get put in part A sickness review if you get a certain score but the system is used so that everyone is treated the same then if you get a 'trigger' you will discuss it with your manager and maybe go to occupational health. Bonuses and pay rises aren't affected as far as I'm aware.

It used to be a bit like that, but last year they lowered the trigger scores and started taking away bonus/rewards and pay rises while also handing out verbal and written warnings. Which has resulted in lots of sick people coming in, spreading the sickness and creating more sick people. But of course the brains behind the system are nowhere near the sick people and so they don’t give a gooseberry fool.
