GOV.UK wrote:Staying at home can help stop coronavirus spreading

You'll need to stay at home if you have symptoms of coronavirus (COVID-19) or live with someone who does.

Staying at home means you should:

  • not go to work, school or public areas
  • not use public transport or taxis
  • not have visitors, such as friends and family, in your home
  • not go out to buy food or collect medicine – order them by phone or online, or ask someone else drop them off at your home
  • You can use your garden, if you have one. You can also leave the house to exercise – but stay at least 2 metres away from other people.

If you have symptoms of coronavirus (a high temperature or a new, continuous cough), use the 111 coronavirus service to find out what to do.

How long to stay at home

If you have symptoms of coronavirus, you'll need to stay at home for 7 days.

After 7 days:

  • if you do not have a high temperature, you do not need to stay at home
  • if you still have a high temperature, stay at home until your temperature returns to normal
  • You do not need to stay at home if you just have a cough after 7 days. A cough can last for several weeks after the infection has gone.

If you live with someone who has symptoms

If you live with someone who has symptoms, you'll need to stay at home for 14 days from the day their symptoms started. This is because it can take 14 days for symptoms to appear.

If more than 1 person at home has symptoms, stay at home for 14 days from the day the first person started having symptoms.

If you get symptoms, stay at home for 7 days from when your symptoms start, even if it means you're at home for longer than 14 days.

If you do not get symptoms, you can stop staying at home after 14 days.

Get an isolation note to give to your employer
If you live with someone who has symptoms of coronavirus, you can get an isolation note to send to your employer as proof you need to stay off work.

Surprised to not to see a thread on this given it's going to kill us all (if my playthroughs of Plague Inc. are correct)

https://www.theguardian.com/science/202 ... toll-jumps

The death toll from the virus has risen to 81, after the southern island province of Hainan in the South China Sea reported its first fatality, an 80-year-old woman whose family arrived from Wuhan on 17 January, AP reports.

Hubei province, where Wuhan is located, has accounted for 76 of the deaths reported so far. There have been one each in Shanghai and the provinces of Hebei in the north, Heilongjiang in the northeast and Henan in central China.

The number of confirmed cases in China has reached 2,744.

China’s national health minister Ma Xiaowei said the new coronavirus is also infectious during incubation, which is different from Sars.

He said authorities’ knowledge of the new virus was limited and they are unclear on the risks posed by mutations of the virus.

2,744 confirmed cases.

81 deaths.

It doesn’t sound like it’s going to kill us all.

Yeah not too worried to be honest, but of course the media is doing everything it can to convince us all it's the second coming of the Spanish Flu.

No doubt I'll now contract it and die, typical

Doubt it'll get too far outside China.

I guess it depends how the virus mutates now it's made the jump into humans but at the moment the mortality rate is significantly less than SARS. Also, I'm not old so I'm less worried.

Pffft, it's not even as deadly as SARS

Are we confident in that mortality rate though?

It's probably coming directly from the Chinese government...

Remember when we all died of bird flu, swine flu, MRSA and SARS? Nah, me neither.

As others have said I wasn't bothered by any of the other recent outbreaks like swine flu so I'm not too concerned about this one.

Looking forward to any new memes it generates though as those are always fun.

Director-General of the World Health Organization wrote:When resources are scarce and priorities are numerous, it is difficult to balance concern about an unpredictable yet potentially catastrophic event against the need to address so many real and pressing problems.

I am often asked if the effort invested in pandemic preparedness is a waste of resources. Has public health cried “wolf” too often and too loudly?

Not at all. Pandemics are recurring events. We do not know whether the H5N1 virus will cause the next pandemic.

But we do know this: the world will experience another influenza pandemic, sooner or later.

We have to ensure we never get complacent

150,000 people died of swine flu, it wasn't really a nothing event.

Nor were the 11,000 deaths from the Ebola epidemic.

I remember the fuss about Aussie flu a couple of years ago.

That bug actually reached this house and it was pretty vicious, strangely though for some reason, i was the only one living here who didn't catch it.

Boy, I sure do wonder why a lot of these diseases start out in China.

I'm not too concerned, but I'll pay attention to the news reports anyway.

Did China shut cities down for SARs?
