I'm not sure what the situation is with comorbidity reporting, but at the end of the day if someone has an existing condition, gets COVID and then dies I think it makes sense to report that as a COVID death in all but the most extreme cases where someone was already at deaths door

Return_of_the_STAR wrote:So Boris has finally realised there's a second wave here :fp:

It seems a bit early to call it a second wave. Its definitely a second wave of cases, but so far the deaths aren't increasing anywhere near the rate of wave 1. There was always going to be a winter wave without a vaccine.

We can't say yet whether this is a wave as big as the first, or something akin to a season respiratory illness wave. We don't really know how bad the flu would be without a winter vaccine, Covid 19 'wave 2' could be as bad as that or much worse. I will say, I'm glad they at least seem ready to make changes if deaths really start to spike.

We still need a proper ramp up of testing though and to properly target it. I don't think the current testing system is really telling us that much aside from cases are spiking and some areas are worse than others.

Edit: Just want to put a bit of advice out there, if you aren't eligible for the flu jab I highly recommend anyone on here to get a private one from Boots. It's about £12.99 and well worth it. My sister in law and my father, both of good health, had the flu 3 years ago and both ended up in hospital. I've had the flu jab every year since then and have already booked mine this year so that I can know I've done everything I can not to clog up the NHS this winter if I get the flu. They need every bit of help they can get.

The govt were supposed to be expanding the flu jab but haven't mentioned it since the start of the summer. So y'know, Tories being Tories. Don't rely on them, get the jab if you can afford it.

Bit of a rant, I see people ask 'but what the deaths!1!!!' on nearly every Twitter post about this. It's really starting to grate.

It's best that everyone waits before making assumptions. I'm going to keep an eye on it and stay open minded. There are a myriad of different factors this time. Like there will be a myriad of different factors for the next wave. We do not know if it will mean a huge amount of deaths for the second wave. It may well, it may not. This 'it's over' mentality that I'm seeing more of now on social media does not seem smart. People need to stay vigilant, and some aren't really doing that.

It's ridiculous to try and compare the current situation with March as we had zero idea how many community cases were in circulation.

Deaths will be lower than expected for a while because this wave began in less vulnerable populations. (It's unlikely to stay in less vulnerable populations, so they will eventually go up, unfortunately.)

The second wave might also be somewhat less deadly overall for a variety of reasons. Or it might not. We have to wait and see now.

That's true, but talk of another mass lockdown is absolutely crazy in my opinion. The evidence doesn't seem to back that plan up at this stage.

Yes I was looking at the rise in cases and predicting a spike in deaths. Two weeks on (the usual lag) we haven't seen a spike in deaths anywhere near what we had in March. Look at the stats.

Two weeks ago, yes looking at what we had in terms of cases, I'd have said a lockdown was the right thing to do. Now, looking at the data, I don't see a trigger point.

Opinions should change based on evidence.

And the only reason we seem to be lurching towards lockdown now is because the government haven't got track and trace up and running. That, to me, isn't justification to screw everyone over.

Edit: The QAnon comment. :fp:

Honestly Moggy you are 95% of the time a really great person to have a discussion or debate with and I respect your views. But sometimes you really let yourself down with bad faith comments.

I'm only 5% annoying? That offends me, I try for at least 20%.

The QAnon (and most of the post) was lighthearted, it wasn't a serious prediction that you're about to wear a MAGA hat and scream that there are children imprisoned underground.

Thing is its not all about deaths. Long Covid is a massive, massive issue and it will absolutely become a future national scandal. You can't just go infecting millions because deaths are low, you are still massively affecting the populations health, how low are you setting the bar otherwise?

So my Covid test kit just arrived (ordered yesterday afternoon) was a surprise really because I’d ordered a new micro SD card from Amazon this morning for delivery today and it wasn’t my micro SD card that arrived from Amazon but the bloody test :slol:

Seriously, was getting my Ad7 hat on and moaning about the waste of packaging for a bloody micro SD card thinking it was that :fp:

This is a really good point that I didn't even consider honestly.

Yeah, my partner's boss has only just come back part time after suffering what I suppose would be technically "mild" symptoms for over two months. She's still not back to full health now. It's an absolutely horrible illness that I do not want to get and do not want to spread to others.

We think some people will have very long term (years) or even permanent symptoms after Covid-19 infection. It's a very, very nasty virus that causes widespread damage to all sorts of systems in the body.

So Whitty & co are doing a press conference at 11 am tomorrow - no questions - going through the data

This is a prelude to Boris announcements on Tuesday I’m guessing. Very odd though they’ve never been allowed to speak alone before without a politician there have they?

If you were wanting to book a Winter Flu jab but have to go private for it, Boots are no longer offering it due to exceptional demand. However Lloyd's Pharmacy are still offering it.

It's the first time to my knowledge too. I think Whitty and Valance are discussing the various predictive models for how autumn and winter will go.

Lockdown 2: But Gyms, Pubs and Restaurants stay open. :datass:
