I think the majority will. People follow the crowd and if Covid kicks back up a notch, masks will come back.

Already seen it in Poland. A month or two ago no one was wearing them, now they're everywhere again.

There's actually been loads of named variants since Delta, they're just not publicised here since not a concern. Apparently it actually jumped 2 names next in the list, Nu and Qi - Nu was skipped because it was considered to be too confusing, and Qi because it would lead to negative connotations with China - so next on the list was Omicron.

Very much doubt "stigmatising a region" was the actual reason, rather it was to avoid embarrassing Xi Jinping and the CCP. Mu is a Chinese family name like Xi but that didn't get skipped, it's just a variant that hasn't been able to out compete Delta.

Nu in French is Nude and in Dutch it's Now so it's not just the English language where confusion would happen.

The naming scheme was introduced well after the Kent variant, South African, Brazilian and Indian variants all got named and would be 6 months ago roughly when the decision to rename them was made.

The remarkable speed of new variants popping up means we're already more than halfway through the Greek alphabet so the system for naming new variants probably only has a year or two at most before needing replacing.

Safe to assume that the "Chi" variant is likely to be skipped too!

Will the Omega variant be the one that evades all vaccine protection and has a 100% kill rate?

Are you suggesting that our twat Prime Minister might have not handled things in a very good way? :o I wonder if he's ever strawberry floated up before?

I don't think so. That's why I'm willing to give him the benefit of doubt. You know doing his best etc

Once again the plan sounds utterly shonky. So from next weekend you have to mask to go into a supermarket, where transmission rates have been one of the lowest on the charts. But pubs, restaurants and nightclubs which are one of the highest vectors, no masks required.

It make no difference if you think masks work or not. I can tell you now that mandatory masks just in supermarkets will make absolutely no difference to infection rates, because supermarkets and shops are irrelevant in the wider picture.

There was a Doctor interviewed on Marr saying patients with Omicron seem to have mild symptoms so far, perhaps the mutation will actually weaken the virus if we're fortunate.

Anti-vax zealot may face charges after death of Covid-19 patient

(Original video that went viral in the article).

This nut is even further gone than I realised. He's chosen to represent himself in court.

Judge Raymond Finnegan asked if he had a solicitor and he replied he had no legal representative.

He told Judge Finnegan: "I don't give jurisdiction to this court. I can represent myself."

He then attempted to hand paperwork to Judge Finnegan but the judge said he was not accepting it.

Mr Mureddu, who did not wear a facemask at any stage of the sitting, claimed he had items stolen by gardaí at Letterkenny garda station.

Judge Finnegan again told the accused he strongly recommended getting legal representation.

Mr Mureddu replied: “Absolutely not. I don’t give any consent. I am the king and you are the public servant.”

Sounds like he's making that ridiculous freeman of the land magna carta argument that I thought was exclusively used in the UK (and has never worked).

This third case of Omicron is a bit weird. The person is no longer in the country. So either they broke the rules and left whilst with a positive test, or they had the variant weeks ago and completed isolation.

Not sure which is more worrying. :dread:

Very initial data seem to suggest it is extremely contagious but actually quite mild. If that's true, perhaps it could end up being as least gooseberry fool as possible (if you see what I mean) in terms of causing minimal suffering/death (hopefully no death at all, of course) but providing additional immunity in the form of antibodies via infection.

Any clever people around to clarify if this is likely?

Of course, it's very early days yet, so it could all turn to mega gooseberry fool. But it's nice to try and be optimistic for now.
