1 month delay, allow time for more vaccinations

It's the only sensible thing to do.

It's the least they can do, they also need to reaffirm how they're going to reverse this uptick without just waiting for second doses to be more prevalent as that'll be late summer. If stopping easing were enough then it wouldn't still be growing, as they haven't eased extra in weeks.

This is my thought on the situation as well. I suspect it will just be a delay but as you say the current situation is still leading to growth.

I'd assume 1 month with a "check" in 2 weeks to see if it needs to continue

or 2 weeks with a check in 2 weeks to see if it needs to roll over

Our biggest problem appears to be the reliance on AZ/Oxford vaccine as that doesn’t appear to be anywhere near as effective against this strain compared to the Pfizer and moderna jabs. I’m getting a bad feeling that we’ve backed the wrong jab here.

I think the data said Oxford AZ is less effective at reducing development of notable symptoms and transmission for the Indian variant, but does very much protect against what would be hospital admission? Then the result would be a worser R number and more self isolation but still helps a great deal to prevent hospitals getting overwhelmed which is what actually kills people, or had the elderly sent off to care homes to die instead.

Just keep away from an additional 20% of people. Job done!

I believe the different efficacy is due to this being a more virulent strain but the vaccine is still effective at preventing serious complications or death.

Which remains a situation that wasn't the case before as only lockdowns could prevent transmission and death.

Novavax jab 100% effective in protecting against moderate and severe disease, trial results suggest

President of research and development at Novavax, said: "Our vaccine will be a critical part of the solution to COVID-19".

Novavax has said its COVID-19 vaccine is 100% effective in protecting against "moderate and severe disease" following its phase three trial results.

The American biotechnology company said the trial had shown its vaccine was also 93% effective against circulating variants of concern and variants of interest, and 91% effective in protecting high-risk populations.

The trial, which involved 29,960 participants across 119 sites across the US and Mexico, showed 90.4% efficacy overall.

The study placed an emphasis on having participants that represented communities and demographics most impacted by the disease.

Within the group, 77 people tested positive for COVID-19, 63 were on a placebo and 14 had received the vaccine.

All of the cases in the vaccinated group were defined as "mild" while 10 "moderate" cases and four "severe" cases were observed among those who had been given the placebo.

Preliminary safety data from the study also showed "generally mild and moderate" pain and tenderness around the injection site, as well as fatigue, muscle pain and headache were the most common symptoms in participants.

Gregory Glenn, president of research and development at Novavax, said: "Our vaccine will be a critical part of the solution to COVID-19 and we are grateful to the study participants and trial staff who made this study possible, as well as our supporters, including the US government."

The company remains on track to be able to manufacture 100 million vaccine doses a month by the end of September and 150 million doses by the end of the year, once it receives regulatory approvals.

President and chief executive officer of Novavax, Stanley Erck, said the results show it is "one step closer to addressing the critical and persistent global public health need" for additional COVID-19 jabs.

He added: "Novavax continues to work with a sense of urgency to complete our regulatory submissions and deliver this vaccine, built on a well understood and proven platform, to a world that is still in great need of vaccines."

Novavax are meant to apply for approval no earlier than 1st July.

I'd imagine that phase 3 variants of concern won't factor in the Indian variant as it's so new but would cover the Kent, South African and Brazilian variant.

They are also testing it as a booster variant when a different vaccine has previously been used. Early data shows the Oxford vaccine followed by the BioNtech vaccine is almost as good as the BioNtech x2 however slightly higher chance of getting a fever and/or headache after the booster dose.

This is fantastic as the Novavax will be produced in the UK. I can see this being used a main source of booster jabs.

After my day as a zombie following the first AZ dose, the silver lining was that the second shot is said to have fewer side effects. Now I can look forward to another trip to hell with this new Zombrex.

I had a slightly less dead arm, like barely bruised, other than that I didn't really notice the second shot at all. I forgot about it after a day.

The first one I definitely had something going on but it was harder to pin down amongst other health factors.

I am one of those people who barely ever seems to get ill from colds or flu though. If I'm ill it's all strawberry floated up in the brain instead, see. To be honest, and I might say this, I think overall despite a strong immune system that's more debilitating over all. Lots of brain problems at least one side of my family (and alzheimers etc) but seemingly never come down with viral infections during the good years (my granny does get infections but she's strawberry floating 95 or something). Maybe it's because we're a clever lot.

Do get headaches etc. Again wasn't sure if that was Oxford AZ or stress from brain not shutting the strawberry float up.
