I have no issue with annual boosters. We already do that for the vulnerable with flu jabs don't we?

Yeah I think I'm just seeing the availability of the vaccine for people our age over in the US and getting jealous. And I think it's only really available for our age group as there's a large anti-vaxx contingent /less coverage among the older age groups eh?

Oh yeah I don't have a problem with one, it's just the concern around the logistics of it, how many we need to deliver, whether we will be done with the initial rollout in time to switch to boosters etc. We give about 15 million flu jabs on average per year, if we have to do that number of covid boosters then it's going to be easy enough to achieve, but if we're looking at a situation where we have to give 2x that number out (plus giving the annual flu jabs as well, and potentially being pro-active around any variant outbreaks) then it's going to be more of a challenge.

Biggest concern is public perception/reaction - so many people are "done with lockdown!" now and will similarly be thinking "what the strawberry float!? why do we have to have another jab I thought it was strawberry floating done!?" :dread:

The 1st doses first policy has been entirely vindicated as the optimum strategy when allocating vaccines in short supply. It's not like the 1st dose is only half the total protection, it's actually the majority of the protection. It was controversial at the time but you basically can't find anyone arguing against the policy anymore.

In the case of the Oxford vaccine it actually improves the efficacy too.

Apart from the USA and Israel (neither of which are having supply issues), pretty much every major country has copied the UK on delaying 2nd doses to ensure people get their 1st dose much earlier.

Image

What that table doesn't show is the percentage uptake, the fear was something like 20% of people would refuse the vaccine but at least in the age groups that make up the overwhelming majority of hospitalisations, ICU admissions and deaths, the percentage is 5% who have yet to get the vaccine (this is more like 15% in London).

The USA will overtake the UK whilst supply remains the bottleneck but partly why they keep expanding the eligible age groups is because they have a much lower percentage uptake. Their roll out speed will soon not be limited by supply, but by demand which is what Israel has faced for over a month now.

In terms of annual boosters, I'm very confident that most countries will be able to roll these out faster than 2021 roll out purely because the supply chain is constantly being increased and the vaccines available are increasing too. Who would have thought a year ago that we'd have started vaccinating in December and will shortly have 4 approved vaccines? With probably a further 3 in a few months time (Novavax, Valneva and Curevac).

That's very optimistic - I hope you're right.

I know loads of Americans my age/younger than me and they all seem to have gotten a jab now. Plus Biden 's now announced that everyone over 16 is now eligible.

I guess I just won't really feel comfortable until I'm vaccinated and thus feel a bit left out of all the "OMG RESTRICTIONS ARE LIFTING!!" hype going around because I won't be doing any of that stuff until I have the jab.

The only countries really going faster than us are the US. Most European countries haven't even gone down to 50+ yet. I got chewed out on another forum by Europeans complaining that we're going too fast and it's not fair.

According to this, based on doses per 100 people, in terms of countries with significant populations Israel, UAE and Chile are ahead of us:

The US are slightly behind. It depends what you mean by "faster" really.

Singapore too. They're down to about the same age group as us and are going to do the second doses within a smaller window. I imagine a lot of the countries that direction will be in similar positions.

So Boris says we should have treat at home tablets by autumn. Is this more "world beating" bollocks? I've heard nothing about home treatments until today.

As with most things the answer is- Boris Johnson is a liar.

There are a number of them that have been in trials since last autumn. It's a real possibility.

Got the first Moderna shot a week and a half ago. Injection site ached like a mummy strawberry floater for a day and a half, and had a decent immune response that made me feel lightly flu-like, but I was good by the end of the second day.

Second dose scheduled for the 7th.

Sounds similar to how I felt after the moderna one as well.

I also still haven’t been able to book a second one yet, the NHS still can’t solve the moderna booking issue :fp:

Just saw that the global death toll recently passed 3 million people.

The global picture is still truly frightening, something which is easy to lose sight of in our bubble of countries that are progressing with relatively successful lockdowns and vaccination programs.

India had almost 300,000 new cases yesterday and has a rolling 7 day average of nearly a quarter of a million. It's absolutely burning through the country at the moment.

I've got quite a few colleagues in India that I deal with pretty regularly, and it's pretty scary how they've gone from 'we're in lockdown' to 'oh strawberry float'

It is absolutely devastating seeing what’s happening in India. Modi is naturally being a banana split and resisting calls for another nationwide lockdown.
