We going back into full lockdown, we find out later today the severity and for how long.

I'd predict 4 weeks which means I might not get a Series X at launch. :x

Welsh "fire-break" lockdown should be getting announced today, hopefully it will actually implement some meaningful changes.

Wish they'd stop giving them stupid names. All that does is confuse people more.

'Circuit breaker' was used earlier in the year in Singapore.

It's so Johnson can say we haven't gone into a second lockdown, we're having a fire break.

Amusement under late capitalism is the prolongation of work.

Fire-break coming from Friday in Wales:

* A "firebreak" lockdown will begin across the whole of Wales from 18:00 BST on Friday
* It will last until midnight on 9 November, First Minister Mark Drakeford says
* Non-essential shops, restaurants, cafes, hairdressers and beauty salon will have to close
* No meetings between people from different households will be allowed, either indoors or outdoors
* There will continue to be an exception for people who live alone

About time too, hopefully people actually pay attention to it so we can get the benefit. Can't see it being long before something similar happens across the UK.

I think that's good, if a little late. We're clearly in an exponential phase of transmission, and by the nature of that kind of trajectory, it needs to be halted so we will not exceed the capacity of healthcare and emergency infrastructure over the coming month or two.

Of course, the time between now and November 9th should be used on reinforcing infrastructure and on public education campaigns + planning for enforcement, particularly about masks. Further waves can be limited or prevented - and the severity of cases on average decreased - if compliance is widespread. Mask wearing is not commonplace here in Wales and that indicates to me that there needs to be a fundamental rethink of how mask use is encouraged.

There needs to be support for those put into financial precarity by this lockdown too; I'm not sure how much power the Welsh government has to do that independently of Westminster, but it's a vital component of lockdowns both for compliance and because it's the right thing to do.

Absolutely. I'm glad there is at least a date or target date in place as it is. Without a target date of leaving lockdown and any kind of financial support, you remove people's hope that they will have control over reversing their personal situation.

Wait does this fire break not provide financial/employment support? I can't see people following it if there isn't.

There is a £300m package to support business apparently but I've not seen information about who is entitled to it and how the process will work

Would it not have been a good idea to have regular planned mini lockdowns? Say 2 weeks every 3 months so that everyone could plan around it rather then just reacting to everything in a state of confusion. Or is that a stupid idea?

You could even plan them round breaks in school term to reduce disruption
