Number of new cases is at least going down though.

I find it hard to believe that the government are genuinely that stupid. Which leaves the only option as wilful negligence at this point.

Just had a harrowing thought on the death stat. There are 1440 minutes per day so todays figure of 1564 means we had more than one person die every minute.

Zilnad wrote:Number of new cases is at least going down though.

This is the only small silver lining, but they really need to be coming down incredibly quickly which it isn't clear if they are yet. So yes coming down is good but still having nearly 50,000 cases isn't really anything to crow about. :dread:

To put it into even more context, we're getting half of a 9/11 every day with that kind of stat.

If things don’t start to get better soon (drastic drop in both infections and deaths) then the government just need to impose the strictest rules possible. People aren’t listening and I get the feeling a load of the population don’t even care, this thread is properly grim which is why I’ve not posted in ages but things continue to get worse :(

News should be in the wards showing doctors treating the dying, following them as they have to make the decisions. It's a hidden horror that has been reduced to numbers. We need faces and stories to get it through to people.

Government has lost all the buy in from the public and it's very difficult to get people back on side. When all they have to say is what about Cummings or Boris. Who break the rules and then change the rules.

This would certainly help reframe things in peoples minds.

The gammon crew like to talk about war metaphors all the bloody time so it's never a good idea to be using the same talking points as them but if this pandemic were being reported in the same way as a war would be, with journalists on the front lines giving harrowing reports of what they are seeing it would make a hell of a difference to peoples perceptions.

And we probably haven't even seen the impact of Christmas relaxation on death figures yet.

It really can't be overstated just how much Cummings changed the mood of the nation. Pretty much everyone was on board and we were all in this together. Then he drives to Durham, lies and keeps his job, when many others are making their jobs or loved ones. I don't blame anyone who after that thought strawberry float it and went to visit their families.

Christmas was the same, the government hyped it up and said it would be immoral to cancel Christmas. Then get angry when people visit family.

Even the eat out to help out. You can't see friends or family but you can pack into a gooseberry fool themed pun for 2 hours for discount chips. And no staff will wear masks while you're in there.

Gyms, hair dressers, small businesses have to close but The Range is allowed to stay open as a ceramic owl is essential.

No idea how they will ever get people back on side. Only way now is to force everyone indoors.

In the first proper lockdown, I remember one of them saying during a briefing that if you didn't go out today, you saved a life. Which I thought was a good way of selling the importance.

Problem is nobody watches the briefings any more.

We have another week or two of deaths going up and then they should start to level off and go down

We are seeing that in the daily infection numbers now

As a indication of comparative attitudes. During the first lockdown I actually felt guilty if I went out for a walk twice in one day. And I've generally been very compliant with the rules. Extrapolate that out and you can see where the problems are.

I've got to get away from kids in some way!

I probably missed something from the above post. I would probably now go to the supermarket as well whereas I didn't set foot in a shop in March and April. Every time I stepped outside of the house felt dangerous. Part of this is probably down to the fact I've had it so I'm less nervous.

What they should be doing is, like mentioned, have video footage of the wards where people are dying of COVID and use that in the advertising on TV. Have one of these ad’s run every single ad break and in between every show on the BBC....force people to see the effects.
