Funnily enough I’m reading a biography of FDR’s press secretary Steve Early - the first modern US press secretary and a forerunner of, erm, Sarah Sanders. He did an incredible job helping FDR sell the New Deal to the American people.

I need to see that because that is a level of self delusion which is so breathtaking that it’s hard to believe he was able to utter it without his mind collapsing like a dying star the millisecond it sparked to life in the soggy walnut of a brain he has inside his stupid strawberry floating head.

FDR for strawberry float sake.
strawberry floating FDR.

Staggering.

I mean I’ve seen them both described as fascist so I suppose there’s that?

Sounds like an interesting book, is it an enjoyable read?

Finished Bernays's Crystalising Public Opinion the other day, thought it was a very interesting look at early marketing techniques/PR.

I haven’t read that actually, got a link? (Quick edit - never mind, it’s going cheap on Amazon). I always took my march on propaganda theory from Ellul, the French writer, but Bernays is an author I really should be more familiar with.

Yeah, it’s really good. Less about the marketing techniques themselves and more of a look at how Early brought the presidency into modern times in the 1930s - I’d recommend it if you’re interested in either propaganda/marketing or US history.

Thanks, added that to my very lengthy list.

Yeah the Bernays one is cheap and a comparatively easy read from some of the literature of that time. Makes some very salient points that are still applicable to communication fields today. Also apparently inspired Goebbels which you could view as something of an evil recommendation. Clearly the actions proposed are effective if nothing else.

I found Ellul a bit of a slog to be honest, was really struggling by the mid section of Propoganda to keep going. Has been a few years since I tried, though.

Oh I can see why you felt vindicated with your work situation now, I did assume you were from there, but wasn't sure. Well done :datass:

Thanks, man. They're still being arseholes but, even if they force me out soon, I know I'm doing the right thing by putting health first.

Pillar 1 is teal, pillar 2 is red.

Public Health England publishes a weekly breakdown of the two categories: tests from hospitals, known as pillar 1, and from commercial labs that process at-home and drive-through tests, known as pillar 2.

While PHE releases full data for England’s nine main regions with a two-week delay, the areas are too big to give local authorities a useful picture of the situation in their communities.

Wait, so the 'infected' rate the announce ever day only includes tests from hospitals. So they've said they've made a major push for testing capacity to hit a deadline they couldn't reach, but they're not adding most of those tested by these means to the daily figures? Have I got this right?!

US buys up world stock of key Covid-19 drug

No other country will be able to buy remdesivir, which can help recovery from Covid-19, for next three months at least

https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/202 ... id-19-drug

If Gilead are going to do that, then their rights on the medication should be ignored and anyone capable of producing it should start manufacturing a generic version. Of course that won't happen for fear of retaliatory actions, so rich countries should instead fund the production of it in poorer nations to supply it to them and the rest of the world. None of that probably made any sense but I'm just seething at that news.

The US has bought up virtually all the stocks for the next three months of one of the two drugs proven to work against Covid-19, leaving none for the UK, Europe or most of the rest of the world.

Experts and campaigners are alarmed both by the US unilateral action on remdesivir and the wider implications, for instance in the event of a vaccine becoming available. The Trump administration has already shown that it is prepared to outbid and outmanoeuvre all other countries to secure the medical supplies it needs for the US.

“They’ve got access to most of the drug supply [of remdesivir], so there’s nothing for Europe,” said Dr Andrew Hill, senior visiting research fellow at Liverpool University.

Remdesivir, the first drug approved by licensing authorities in the US to treat Covid-19, is made by Gilead and has been shown to help people recover faster from the disease. The first 140,000 doses, supplied to drug trials around the world, have been used up. The Trump administration has now bought more than 500,000 doses, which is all of Gilead’s production for July and 90% of August and September.

“President Trump has struck an amazing deal to ensure Americans have access to the first authorised therapeutic for Covid-19,” said the US health and human services secretary, Alex Azar. “To the extent possible, we want to ensure that any American patient who needs remdesivir can get it. The Trump administration is doing everything in our power to learn more about life-saving therapeutics for Covid-19 and secure access to these options for the American people.”

The drug, which was invented for Ebola but failed to work, is under patent to Gilead, which means no other company in wealthy countries can make it. The cost is around $3,200 per treatment of six doses, according to the US government statement.

The deal was announced as it became clear that the pandemic in the US is spiralling out of control. Anthony Fauci, the country’s leading public health expert and director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, told the Senate the US was sliding backwards.

“We are going in the wrong direction,” said Fauci. Last week the US saw a new daily record of 40,000 new coronavirus cases in one day. “I would not be surprised if we go up to 100,000 a day if this does not turn around,” he said. He could not provide an estimated death toll, but said: “It is going to be very disturbing, I guarantee you that.”

Remdesivir is notoriously very difficult to synthesise, so I think it's unlikely that we'll see anyone else producing it within the next few months.

I hope this makes people think "hmm, maybe medicine production shouldn't be in the hands of clearly-evil profit-motivated corporations" though.
