You would think the makers of this product would allow it to be licensed for production around the world Instead.

Gilead have an unpublished process for producing remdesivir that makes it possible to synthesise batches in just a few months, as compared to the best part of a year if a University laboratory tried it. That process of course should have been nationalised and published the second it became clear it could help survival rates in a global pandemic.

They started cosying up to the US government in March when the first positive indications about the drug came in, iirc. I'm sure both the high-ups at Gilead and lots of key people in the US government are profiting quite nicely from this.

I'm in the pharmaceuticals field myself (on the academic side) and I find all this big pharma stuff abhorrent. If anything should be a socialist endeavour, funded by the people and distributed based on need rather than profit, it's medicine.

It could well be that you'd distribute the lion's share of the drug to the US anyway - they are going to be the worst-affected country in the world - but other badly-affected countries like Brazil have real need too and should be seeing some of it.

Yes definitely agree on pharmaceuticals being government led.

Vaccine nationalism is guaranteed to happen based on that Remdesivir news.

Hopefully but it probably all depends on who develops a successful vaccine, if it ever happens.

I sort of hope China develop the first vaccine just because of how hilarious it would be watching the chuds lose their gooseberry fool.

Let your population become massively infected.
Order massive batches of treatment drug from your mates
Charge your population a fortune for the drug
SMART!

- There's not enough vaccine to go around. The underclasses are starting to get desperate.
- Of course they're desperate! They can smell their death. And the sound they make rattling their cage will serve as a warning to the rest.

Just realised if you rearrange the letters from Remdisivir (and then change a bunch of them) you get VersaLife

It's not really capitalism though, if you follow the idea that under capitalism you just want to make as much money as possible. So you should be trying to license out your drug so you can fulfil demand.

Amusement under late capitalism is the prolongation of work.

What do you mean? As a private company they sold their supply to the government willing to give them the best deal, instead of distributing it on more humanitarian grounds. What isn't capitalistic about it?

Unless they have been forced to sell to the US government, then it's almost certainly a capitalistic move based on making the most money.

I'd be interested to know if anyone has compared the pillar 2 data increase a couple of weeks ago against the number of tests done in the city. I know one or two people in Leicester who have said that testing in the city was ramped up a few weeks ago and their (possible tin hat opinion) is that this was to give a reason to impose a local lockdown as a trial.

Sarah Vine and Alison Pearson appear to have an ongoing competition on who can be the government's biggest bootlicker.

We accept their chlorinated chicken so we can then purchase their beautiful Remdisivir. Trade deal. Get on it, Boris.
