I've not been paying any attention to anything 'rona related for the past 3 weeks (it's reached such farcical levels of convolution you've seemingly got to eat, sleep and gooseberry fool Covid news 24/7), but I saw this NHS advert and I thought what kind of illogical layout is this:

It's deliberately designed to be confusing.

Thanks.

Yet for squashing Covid-19 flat, Ardern’s New Zealand has paid a terrible economic price. In the second quarter GDP fell by 12.2 per cent. That’s smaller than Britain’s fall, but it is a horrendous collapse considering the far lighter footprint of coronavirus in New Zealand. The economy has been impacted in this way because of the heavy-handedness of lockdown restrictions.

"Yes they have 43k less deaths and have stamped the virus out, but their economy also did better than us! How bloody useless!"

That has to be one of the stupidest things I've read. The person who wrote that likely knows what bollocks they're sprouting, but won't let that get in the way of trying to push an agenda. Sickening.

What is the general view on here as to what the next steps should be?

Need another lockdown. A serious one.

Had to drive through Leeds city centre last night. And it's no wonder the numbers are so high, was pretty much a standard Saturday night almost. Like strawberry float me people are thick :fp:

They aren't thick they have given up.

You have riding cases but not massively rising deaths.
No effective and coherent leadership
Constantly changing convoluted rules
Politicians ignoring the rules and having no comeback

Although I don't agree with then doing what they do I totally understand why they would, why should they continue to put their life on hold after 7 months of doing that when the people telling them how in danger they are and how we must all stick together aren't doing it too.

Not massively rising deaths?

Just over a month ago they were in single figures, as low as 5 a day. Yesterday that figure was 150. That's a 3000% increase in barely over a month!

You are clearly an expert with numbers - The Great British Public is not interested in the views of so-called experts, so kindly pipe down.

The messaging is a shitshow. We have low, medium, high alert levels, tiers of 1-3 with differences even within tiers. We also have/had alert levels of 1-5

How does that compare to a normal winter season? I'm struggling to find stats on it. I have read that during the peak of winter season, there can be around 1000 deaths a day from respiratory illness.

I'm unsure of what route is best to take. I'm uncomfortable with local lockdowns as it's easier for the govt to limit financial support. I'd prefer a national system where everyone has some kind of protection like Lockdown 1. But even then millions of self employed were just cut adrift.

But if you look at the south west, generally we are on a reasonable position here so there isn't the trigger for a lockdown yet. I'd like to give the benefit of the doubt to the current strategy, but I just can't give any benefit of doubt to a govt that are just so misleading on every level.

I'd argue the lack of integrity from this government is directly responsible for a lot of the conspiracy theories and lack of will to comply with rules from a large section of the public.

I saw a comment on an Irish news story today that summed up one aspect of upcoming lockdowns: 'Lockdown suits far too many people and that scares me.'

It coincided with a tweet I saw from a bigwig at RTE (Ireland's BBC) in which the user shared photos of her massive library and garden, and asked how their followers planned to spend lockdown. In Ireland, public sector employees are essentially unsackable and earn on average 40% more than workers in private sector. There's a much stronger push from media and certain elements of the public for lockdown there.

Not speaking of others on this forum - quite the opposite, I've heard some terrible stories - but there are some privileged people outside here for whom lockdown didn't mean much. No cases in the family, no interruption of income, just a general malaise. For me, as I mentioned a few pages ago my Dad recovered from Covid in the nursing home that had the most deaths in Ireland, thank god, and I've been unemployed now for five months burning through £1,000+ per month renting in London. My savings aren't bad and my wife works, but I can't imagine what it would be like for two retail workers with kids having been laid off.

If there is no choice but lockdown I'll accept that. But before we rush into a 'circuit breaker' that could last for months, I would absolutely need assurances as per caseloads/death numbers that in all cases will trigger a lockdown, the corresponding numbers that lead us out of lockdown, and the guarantee of stimulus payments for the unemployed. If your main concern right now is which order of titles on your library shelf you'll begin reading, and not how long until you have to move back in with your parents and start over, we're not 'all in this together'.

I don't know, but there's no certain link between the 150 covid deaths and those who would have died on that day anyway if the virus didn't exist.

Surely we're still some way off peak winter anyway. I'd have thought December and January would be the most dangerous months?

Yeah we're not even in winter yet so comparing the numbers against a "normal winter season" is a bit of an odd take!
