We've had the same. Fortunately I don't have kids so I've not had to worry about it but until we were officially key workers any parents who took time off to look after their kids who couldn't go to school were expected to pay that time back.

The thing that gets me about being an "essential worker" (we're not) is, the one service you could argue we provide that is essential (internet access for anyone that may need to apply for universal credit or what have you) is the thing we aren't offering. Instead, we're encouraging people to break lockdown (good luck with that £200 fine for non-essential travel since we're in Derbyshire) to come in for books. Luckily most people seem to be smart and staying away but we've been told we need to actively encourage people to come in whenever they call or we phone them for book requests.

The number of people abusing the extremely loose "key worker" designations this time around is insane. My wife is a teacher and her school has something like 60% occupancy at the moment - there is no strawberry floating way that many kids have parents who are genuinely essential to the running of the country.

Have heard various stories from head teachers and others on the senior leadership team at schools getting berated and abused by parents demanding they take their kids even though they are working in jobs that allow them to be at home and could easily be worked around. Yes it is hard to work at home and have kids around, but that's the point - it's hard for everybody and only those who genuinely are not able to be around to look after their kids at the moment because they are doing genuinely essential jobs should be sending them to school!

Fortunately lots of the council's in Wales have employed stricter measures in terms of who is eligible, prioritising NHS and blue light workers, requiring that both parents be key workers etc.

Apparently I'm a key worker now, too.

With news of this third new dangerous strain coming out of Brazil, can anyone (okay, Karl) suggest the likelihood that one will eventually develop that is immune to the vaccine? Is this inevitable or highly unlikely?

Schools just need to tell parents that are not "key workers" to strawberry float off.

I am designated as a key worker, but for context, I work in regulatory reporting for a utility company. I have absolutely nothing to do with the operational side of the delivery for the utility in question.

I live in Excel yet am allegedly a "key worker".

Some schools do we were given letters from the government saying we were key workers and some schools refused to accept them.

Yeah like I say plenty of local council's around here have drawn up a much stricter set of criteria, just being on the government list of "key workers" often isn't enough.

Seeing various mentions on Twitter of people getting invited for their 3rd jab of the vaccine or for a second first jab. :fp:

It's clear that whatever systems they have in place to track and coordinate the roll out of the vaccine are woefully inadequate.

The "key worker" thing seems to be subject to a bit of interpretation; my sister works in a job that is definitely not "key" (i.e. not medical, food, support, emergency services, public transport, delivery or essential retail) and the company advised her that she could be classed as a "key worker" if she wanted. She has declined that offer.

I guess it's a case of some employers taking advantage of rules and loopholes.

strawberry floating hell this is only getting worse.

Am I right in thinking that it appears the government is only, in the last day or two, entertaining the notion that people might not be doing what they're told? The headlines seem to point to it. Surely they don't think just saying TIER 5 NOW actually does anything.
