Risk of AZ blood clots similar to a long-haul flight - Hancock
Hancock is asked what he would say to people under 30 who are thinking of not getting a vaccine after seeing the news about blood clots.

He says the evidence suggests long Covid affects people in their 20s as much as any other age group.

The mental health impacts of Covid are also becoming "increasingly clear", the health secretary says.

Regulators are clear the benefits of vaccination "far outweigh the risks".

He adds the risk of developing blood clots after having the AstraZeneca jab is about the same as on a long-haul flight.

So maybe under 30s should stop flying as well

If he's saying that the risk from the AZ vaccine is about the same, then he's really not reassuring people.

My parents are due to have their second dose of the AZ vaccine soon, and while they'll still have it despite the potential AZ risks, my mum in particular is concerned about the blood clot issue.
Does anyone know if there's any issue with taking a daily aspirin for a period of time (not sure how long?) after having the vaccine, either to mitigate the risk a bit, or even just help her stop worrying? I can't see why there'd be an issue, but it seems like the kind of thing that might be asked or discussed somewhere. Wondered if anyone had seen any mention of this anywhere.

I have absolutely zero authority on this but I would have thought that randomly taking Aspirin when you don't need to is likely to pose more of a risk itself than the extremely low risk presented by the AZ vaccine.

Buy her a calculator, then do the sum of how many people who have taken the AZ vaccine have developed blood clots.

I've not heard of anything about aspirin and the AZ vaccine.

All I get in a search are stories saying that taking an aspirin every day is far more dangerous than any potential vaccine side effects.

Mrs has got the shivers going on now. The heating is cranked right up and I'm sweating like a bastard.

It's definitely not recommended to take any amount of aspirin every day without consulting a doctor. Aspirin in the high dose found in painkillers is especially meant to only be taken occasionally (that'll be on the information leaflet in the packet).

A far lower dose of aspirin can be taken daily to prevent blood clots, but obviously you talk it through with your GP first.

The best thing would be to reassure her that, practically speaking, there's no chance of her getting this serious side-effect. It seems to be literally one in a million. There's more chance of her getting ill from anything she self-medicates to try and prevent it.

EDIT: If your Mum is set on doing it then you could tell her to cut the aspirin tablet into quarters and just take a quarter a day. That will be closer to a course of "low-dose aspirin". There is a list of people who can't take low-dose aspirin here: https://www.nhs.uk/medicines/low-dose-aspirin/

She shouldn't do it at all though, certainly not without asking a doctor.

Also, from what they're saying, they don't have any recorded cases of blood clots after a second dose I believe. The deaths have happened in the days after a first dose, so should be fine for a second dose.

I guess if the body is going to react that way it'll happen the first time it's exposed to the vaccine.

Thanks for the replies guys, and yeah I think it's probably best to do nothing re: aspirin. I guess my thinking was along the lines of what I've heard about taking aspirin for a day or two after a long-haul flight. I've tried to reassure her in other ways about the statistics and such though. I also read what Imrahil mentioned about there being no evidence of clots after the second dose - any recorded instances of that seem to be in reaction to the first dose, which I think will definitely put her mind at ease.

Herd immunity requires something like 70-80% immunisation, from what I understand. We're a long way away from that, unfortunately.

Basically, we're winning and we can get more optimistic now instead of the normal doom and gloom.

We're nowhere near a genuine herd immunity situation and it's still a fools strategy against something which has demonstrated as much capability to mutate as this has.

Remember the original government strategy of herd immimuty
