Echoing the sentiments of others where I really enjoyed watching Campaign 1 but have struggled to get into the later campaigns due to the time commitment. I think Campaign 1 felt a lot more unique at the time in that there were a lot less D&D podcasts around and watching the cast and show snowball to popularity was really cool to be a part of. Plus it was the first big podcast to reach a big endgame climax which I also remember being a big deal at the time.

I do think that if you enjoy D&D then the Exandria Unlimited: Calamity which is a short (4 Session) campaign DM'd by Brendan Lee Mulligan and played by some of the Critical Role cast is probably the best D&D content available.

I like D&D, so inevitably I've seen a few clips of Critical Role - they were very funny!

I do not have time to watch 1000 hours of someone else's D&D campaign though, so I haven't engaged too much with the stream itself.

I think The Legend of Vox Machina is a fun cartoon. Looking forward to the second season.

I know they make quite a lot of money now but they do seem to still play for fun and don't min/max or take the game more seriously than it deserves.

The fact that the game has resulted in four of the crew getting married shows that they are actually friends outside the game and it's not all a cynical act.

They’re fairly max/min in some sense.

At character creation MM let’s then reroll if stats below a certain value. (So they all have high stat totals)
They’re allowed to reroll hp upgrades.
MM gives them very strong magical items, often tailored to overcome their characters short comings (eg the gloves that turned a monk ranged)
They play homebrew rules on spells to make the massively more powerful (mirror images and disintegrate being 2 memorable examples)
Even years later they still don’t know the difference between a saving throw and an ability check - resulting in them regular using notable higher modifiers.

Again this is done to help then tell a heroic narrative story with strong/competent protagonists as their product

I've always wondered when they actually level up, since they never mention XP at any point :slol:

I was thinking that I couldn't remember much of Tiberius being a dick, but then I remembered that they had the whole big boss at the end of the underdark bit in the first campaign where he just refused to enter the room and let everyone else fight it out

The twenty-odd minutes he spent trying to convince Scanlan to give up the iron stone or whatever it was, too  I thought that might have just been him being pompous as that's the character, but was that genuinely him being a knob?

They use ‘milestone’ leveling option is which effectively were the DM decided enough narrative has happened to justify it - rather than just adding up Xp for each monster killed. It makes sense.

Yeah he meta gamed that hard and had should have had no idea about liar actions etc. Then he came in to try and get the killing blow.

He also tried to get MN to agreed to trade the Ioun Stone on Scanlan/Sams behalf when the player wasn’t there iirc. That was scummy.

He certainly was trying max/mom his character. Remember he made the krull blade that he argued was 6 daggers on one so should do 6 daggers worth of damage :D

I love the OxBoxes (never encountered anyone else who watches them? Who's your favourite? Andy/Luke/Mike are a tie for me) but I just really don't want to see them play DnD or Blades.

Andy is fantastic, It's a really good watch! The DM is brilliant, Johnny Chiodini. Luke occasionally does a bit of a DMing ( But he runs the BITD Group, which I haven't got into yet ) but the whole thing is great, if you like D&D I really do recommend it!

Nah I know them from the (Video) gaming channels - I've no idea why but they'r RPGing just never clicked for me. I'd rather watch their "real" (possibly stage) personalities.

Do they improve the sound, they are OK most of the time, but when they get a little loud it's like someone shooting my ears with a strawberry floating cannon.

It gets way better in terms of sound/video quality. It was originally just comparatively throwaway session on a steam etc

Yep, one of the nice aspect is seeing how they can gradually improve the experience as they get more money and better mini's and sets.
They really do start as a true home game with pen/paper and just the books so it's a set-up pretty much anyone can afford and how I used to play the game.
The moneybags version they have now is nicer but doesn't fundamentally change the game which is one of the reasons I like D&D so much.

Anyone should be able to turn up to even the most lavish game session with just a copy of the base rules and be able to play at exactly the same level as someone with unlimited budget.

Why not start a thread and gauge interest? I bet you could get a game going!

If organising people to get on Discord on a regular evening is a barrier, you can play D&D just fine in a forum thread. You know, the DM posts what's going on, they wait a while so anyone who wants to participate can post what they want to do, then the DM says what happens, and repeat...!

I think people tried not long ago and there wasn't much interest. I'd also rather not be organising gooseberry fool, cause I'm lazy

I bought books on Roll20. I've just looked and have the Players Handbook, Xanathar's Guide to Everything and Tasha's Cauldron of Everything.

Sounds like you just need the Dungeon Master's Guide and you're all set to DM! :toot:
