Crumpets = Cheese and Muffins = Jam.

This is correct, right? Muffins are a breakfast item eaten with butter and jam, and crumpets are a lunch item eaten with cheese. That's how I've always had it. But my girlfriend puts jam on crumpets. What the actual strawberry float?

Please confirm that I am correct, GRcadians, and that my girlfriend is a mental case.

You are correct.

I have met these people before. Nothing but trouble.

No.

Muffins are a cake type product. You don't eat them with jam!

Crumpets are like little rounds of toast, eaten with hot butter and jam or marmalade.

Who the strawberry float eats crumpets with cheese?

Why do you have a problem with jam on crumpets?
I suppose you're also against chocolate spread on crumpets.

Both are fine at any time, but only toasted with just butter (which melts)

Teacakes complete the holy trinity.

Muffins are rubbish full stop. Crumpets are good at all times, with just butter.

In the U-S-of-A crumpets are called "english muffins". It's important to realise that we aren't talking about the sort of muffin one would buy in Starbucks, but a bread based product that looks a bit like a small, flattened barmcake. Unless you come from Oldham, where I believe that barmcakes are referred to as "muffins" and "muffins" are "teacakes". For myself a "teacake" must always contain raisins or sultanas.

So where do we go from here? Is it down to the lake I fear? NO! But we must establish a normalised nomenclature before this heady debate can proceed further with any credibility.

You are so wrong. Crumpets are had for breakfast with butter alongside a good cup of tea.

'Hexx' and 'butter' in the same post, reminded me of Bernardo Bertolucci's classic 1973 film, Last Tango in Paris.

Anything that goes on toast can go on crumpets, so Jam, Marmalade, Cheese, Marmite, Peanut Butter etc. (though probably not beans).

THIS is a muffin.
