Probably made the decision early on when the sales were a bit poor... then it went on to sell well over 2 million copies or some such.

But in this day and age a game's a failure if it sells under 5 million copies in the first few months.

Whoever's decision that was is strawberry floating nob end. The whole point was that the game would still be current, more people would keep buying and playing it as time went on and they upgraded their PCs.

I presume they decided to develop Warhead instead...and they realised only a tiny minority could play it at maximum anyway.

I'm sure when the rest of the world catches up they'll release another iteration of their Cry Engine which is far beyond anyones current PC.

Yeah, I'm sure I read a Warhead preview interview with the devs where they attributed the relatively poor sales of Crysis to the hype surrounding the specs required to run it well (unjustified hype as it turned out, it ran fine on medium settings on my 3 year old PC). They probably didn't want to further that impression by upping the detail, and the specs required to run it, every year.

You see stuff like this and you know one day, not too far away, even that's going to be old hat. I despair.

Yep, this is why I'm purely a console gamer now.

That's not strictly true though. If you were to go out an buy a upper-medium class gaming rig now, you could play Crysis on High or Very High settings at a reasonable res. At those levels, it's still the best looking game out there. Crysis was released in 2007 and still nothing's come close to beating it. That's 3 years already, and there's nothing on the horizon that looks even close to bettering it. I know PC gaming is always a case of upgrading, but it's not like a computer becomes obsolete after a year anymore.

You upgrade your consoles once every 5 years or so, if you did the same with your PC you'd never lag that far behind.

Almost two years.

To be fair, these are screens created by people using the editor to make the game look as good as possible.

Having said that though, there are some terrific mods out there. That'll run on relatively modest hardware. This bloke has got a dual core celeron with a ATI 3870.

The best rendering/physics in known existence engine is the human imagination if some one could make a console/pc style device that used the power of our imagination to play games that would be the ultimate system.

And it'd still just be used to make a game where a man runs through a jungle shooting at things. :fp:

Not if it was attached to my imagination. It would be a porn game.

Retards maybe  I was looking at CG / pre rendered stuff and saying I cant wait for games to look as good as that

I was looking at the screenshots in the OP and I was thinking "Finally, someone actually knows how to do distance fogging / atmospheric scattering correctly"

Idiots indeed, especially when it comes to PC games, I remember an interview with one of the creators of Sins of a Solar Empire saying how companies were just being stupid because they weren't seeing huge sales of PC games, and attributing it to piracy even though PC games never tend to sell in the millions.

Blew my mind. It actually looks better than real life.
I reckon a rig capable of this stuff is atleast £3000+
