As soon as you exit the prison can't you do whatever you want?

I always made a save there so if starting again I could just load it, redo character creation and respec, and get going. Skyrim really annoys me for not having a respec opportunity so you always have to play through the opening (sans the very opening cart ride).

Not really, you have to find the Emporers son and he's in Kvatch, the scene of the first Oblivion gate, I mean maybe technically you can do what you want but to open the map up fully you have to go to Kvatch, fight to the Oblivon Gate, dick about in there for an hour or so, close it then take back Kvatch itself, it's extremely tedious.

Then you head back to the priory and thats under attack, then you bring the 'emperor to be' to the blades base right at north of map but at least I got gifted a horse. Game starts properly now. The only downside is the framerate is a bit juddery in open areas, it all looks gorgeous but if you pan and look off into the distance it gets a bit juddery, I presume not much MS could do about the framerate, it's odd tho cos Fallout 3 is uprezzed to 4K and it's locked 30fps.

I've definitely played characters without ever going to Kvatch. Doing so just means no Oblivion Gates spawn iirc.

I played over 100 hours on Oblivion in 2006 before ever going to Kvatch, meeting Jauffre or Sean Bean or any of that stuff!

The entire map is open from the get go, Oblivion gates don't even start appearing before Kvatch. You can ignore the story entirely if you wish. Start the fighters guild quest line as that sends you all over the world.

Thieves/Assasins Guild FTW.

I never knew you could ignore the story line...wonder If I've an old save about so I don't have to deal with those gates!

Dark Brotherhood all the way

I still haven't actually done virtually any of the main quest in Oblivion. It just didn't appeal to me so I just pootled off and got on with all sorts of other shite!

I think it wasn't until playing it a couple of years back that I even got as far as bothering to go and see Brother Jauffre.

I've completed it, but it was a bit painful because of the level scaling being a nightmare.

Did they ever fix the gold glitch in the quest Count Hassildor gives you?

Dark Brotherhood quests in Oblivion are so good. Much more preferable to the ones in Skyrim. Though I think that with the other guilds too.

I think the Mages stuff in Skyrim is a bit better than Oblivion, and maybe the Thieves as well... but other than that Oblivion is the clear winner!

I loved the Dark Brotherhood stuff in Oblivion, the whole bonus objectives mechanic made the quests a lot more interesting.

To be fair I'm struggling to think of a questline, or even an individual quest, in Skyrim that really stands out as being genuinely great.... the bit where you play detective is quite fun?

Asscreed had me saying Assassins Guild but I meant the Dark Brotherhood, yeah I think the actual quests for the DB in Obivion were better but the overall story and base of the Dark Brotherhood in Skyrim was better and more fleshed out.

I'm very tempted to get Morrowind (also upscaled to 4K on X) I've heard the combat is terrible but the storyline is one of the better ones.

The upscaling of enemy levels in Oblivion was a major misstep.

The combat in Morrowind isn't terrible per se, it's just that it was still based on a DnD-esque dice roll system which meant you could be hitting something with your sword over and over without any of the attacks being successful.

Oblivion onward ditched this for a more active, real-time "if you hit it you cause damage" approach which "feels" more immediate and satisfying - and in line with how first person action games tend to work.

I've started Morrowind twice and just can't get on with it. I don't I've ever made it much further than the starting town before getting my ass handed to my by a highwayman as soon as I tried venturing forth.

You can use spears so Morrowind wins

Still my favourite Elder Scrolls game.

I can see why they moved away from the dice roll combat though, definitely one of several factors in why the series grew in popularity from Oblivion onward.

I prefer the Skyrim combat mechanics, it's the lack of variety that irks me. I want to roleplay my spear user pls

Right, going to try Hollow Knight again! It was either that or Bloodstained but I don’t think the Switch version has been patched much as of yet so may as well cross Hollow Knight off of my list while waiting for another patch that hopefully sorts most of the issues.

To my shame I’m going to keep a guide to hand for my second attempt at Hollow Knight (obviously won’t be using it all the time but), putting it down and trying to pick it up where I left off so I’m starting a new game and I’ll stick with it this time, well hopefully......

If they had spears in Skyrim that would have made up the bulk of all my builds, naturally as a stealth archer on the side.
