Uncharted 4

Finally got round to this after going through 1-3, the opening sections are a very different tone which is nice to see. Speaking of nice to see it looks amazing, even on a base ps4.

The opening sections got a little criticism with some people saying it takes awhile to get going, but I really enjoyed them. Ease you into the game and build the story up nicely.

Abacus wrote:Uhhh. I've been playing Ristar on the Megadrive Classic collection, mainly so I can vote it off in the videogame eliminator thread with a clear conscience. It was a pile of bum then and it's a pile of bum now. Awkward to control, wastes so many good ideas by being a clumsy mess with a stupid grab mechanic that funnily enough no-one has ever missed or tried to replicate.

Here's the thing: in general good games don't die, they always get a sequel. And if they don't it's either because they are made by developers that went bust, or because they were only ever one shot games that did everything they needed to do the first time. It looks great, but otherwise this feels like a pound-shop Rayman.

I also found Ristar incredibly tedious to play when I tried it (on the PSP version of the Megadrive classic collection) a number of years ago (10-ish).

There's quite a few worse games in the collection (the awful port of Virtua Fighter 2, Gain Ground and Vectorman being prime examples) but it isn't a great game.

My surprising favourite in that collection would probably be Flicky, its such a simple game but there's something about it that kept me going back to it for months, rather annoyingly though my sister was far better at it than both my brother and myself despite the sizeable age gap (see also Soul Calibur and obscure PS2 puzzler Bombastic for other examples of humiliating defeat at the hands of a (then) child).

A thumbs up for Flicky for me as well. It was a tremendous, addictive little game, with quite a lot of skill required to actually get good at. And an annoying plinky plonky theme tune that gets right into your head.

I remember when it first came out, one of the gaming magazines gave it a really high score (93 if I remember correctly - and Mean Machines springs to mind as the magazine, but that could be wrong).

Cue general outrage that such a simple, basic looking game could get that high score. But to be fair, I played it for hours and thought it was fully worth it at the time.

Resident Evil : Umbrella Chronicles

Still playing  , but I gave this game a good kicking in the bollocks until it was dead yesterday.
Just got the “The fourth survivor” level & a special stage to do then I’m free.

Been smashing through Rare Replay while off work sick this week, here are some assorted comments:

- Jet Force Gemini's controls haven't aged particularly well, it's a bit difficult to move around.
- Blast Corps is great! So is Conker's Bad Fur Day, which I missed the first time round.
- Battletoads is really hard, even with the rewind function.
- The old-school games in this collection are a lot of fun. Thoroughly worth the money that I paid in 2015. If you're thinking of downloading this on Gamepass, do it.
- Grabbed By The Ghoulies, however, is strawberry floating terrible. Absolutely appalling game.

I've been playing a bit more on console these last days,so.. why not!

Final Fantasy XIII. I had fun more or less, but that was a bit linear for me I feel. I know the universe and what's in it now at the very least,so I'm glad. I wanted to know about the cast of characters for so long!
Hatsune Miku - Project Diva X. I don't especially like this one due to the stage mechanic, but at the same time, that's the only one of the F series that is 60 FPS and on PS4.. I might migrate to Future Tone, but it's none the less a solid rhythm game. Now with the new Switch game annonced,it might be a great thing to wait for, too!
Bravely Default. I play it on my way to work, and I must say it has a lot of charm. I would like to 100% some time. It has great gameplay, and i think i'm doing okay at it,so that's cool. 8-)

I was done with this game when I was killing the blobs on the beach at the start. The pistol sounds so weedy, it's like a pellet gun. It's clean and crisp and 60fps but the enemies are awful AWFUL!

I thought JFG had a modern control option?

I always wondered why they didn't go back to Blast Corps, I thought it sold pretty well and it's a really strong game.

It does but it's still quite off for me - even the modern controls are not especially intuitive.

Jet Force Gemini was the game that made me start to think Rare were losing it, following up with the weak DK64 and bloated Tooie and I realised that them moving to Xbox was not going to be such a loss after all.

Blast Corps is a strawberry floating classic though, adored that game but there was one level I never managed to get through if I remember rightly. Probably one of those that needed you to use the vehicle that knocked stuff down by doing handbrake turns - satisfying when it works but really hard to nail the correct movement when under pressure!

I've just started Dragon Quest III on iOS. I haven't played much of this before but even for an RPG it's a bit slow to begin with. The game opens with a slightly long winded personality test to determined the type of character you'll play as which while a clever idea in theory is a little tedious in practice, it took me a good 20 odd minutes just to reach the main game.

The problem I always have with this approach is that I end up gaming it to make the build I want to make. Happens in Mount and Blade Warband and Fallout New Vegas. I wish they'd just make the choice obvious rather than trying to obscure it.

The questions in this one are really vague like if you believe in what fortune tellers say or if you prefer dogs over cats. Then depending on how you answer you enter one of several scenarios where you have to perform some arbitrary task in my case rolling boulders for an old man.

Yakuza 0

Took a short break from this which turned into a long break which turned into I haven't played it since 2018. Never went back as I assumed my loss of story threads would make the whole thing moot but then I found the recap function in the title screen which is excellent.

Last night I went fishing and on my first ever try caught 3 Great White sharks with a children's toy rod.

I love this game.

Similarly, I recently went back to Kiwami 2 after I got burned out for a little while. Turns out I was like half an hour away from the end of the story.

I then played through Majima's chapter, which I wish was a bit longer, and is a tragic waste of Dio's voice actor who only appears in like two scenes.

I feel I'm making these Dragon Quest games I've been playing lately way more of a grind than they need to be.

When playing JRPGs I have this odd compulsion to always have the best equipment available to me at any given time but items in Dragon Quest get bloody expensive pretty quickly. In DQIII specifically there seems to be a new incrementally better and more expensive set of gear for my guys in each village and town I visit which I just have to buy.

I'm like "Ooh, that sword that costs double the one I'm using does one more damage, gotta have it" I suppose the upshot of all the grinding for cash is by the time I'm ready to move on my party is always a little overpowered.

Similarly if there are skills, perks etc. to be learned I just have to learn them all which is why my runs through FFIX and Lost Odyssey took way longer than they probably should have and why I'll likely never finish FFVI.

Been playing a ton of CTR Nitro Fuelled (Switch), online and doing some of the Grand Prix challenges to unlock stuff.

Mario Maker 2. Story mode - not exactly the focus of the game but there's so much creativity to enjoy here still. Speedrunning people's online levels and getting world records. Been having a laugh on the multiplayer versus/co-op too. Shame that it's pretty laggy. Would be such a good mode - and of course it's a shame you can't play it with friends either.

Xenoblade Chronicles 2. Only a couple of hours in but I'm enjoying it. Go other games I'm switching between but probably going to be focusing on this one a lot.

They are Billions hit consoles yesterday and while the port is minimal in terms of controller support (also supports mouse) the fact you can pause it and plan what you gonna do minimise the disadvantage of being on a controller.

It runs well and it’s ROCK hard. This kind of game is totally my thing, setting up defences, resource gathering etc, I really enjoy it. When first Horde hits I’ve been battered but with each new map I learn more and more. No campaign on console annoyingly.
