Really feels like Hollow Knight is starting to get to my skill limit right now, just can’t beat the Watcher Knights. Think I might try the boss in the Soul Sanctum again to upgrade my spell, might help a little.

You can make things a little easier for yourself if you look up before the fight starts.

Already done that  still to no avail! I’ll be trying it again this evening, hopefully perseverance will help me win in the end.

Still Contra Anniversary Collection. I wish they’d put a little more effort into the trophy list here. They’re all bronze (bar one) and all for simply beating each game, you have to finish Hard Corps 5 times for crying out loud (technically 6 since you have to finish the PAL version once too).

Konami should take a lesson front Capcom since I get the impression far more love went into the making of their Megaman compilations.

Fire Emblem Three Houses, to the point where I can't stop thinking about it.

To me this game does right everything Persona 5 got wrong. The social time in the latter was constantly interrupted by lengthy, unsignalled plot stuff that meant there was no way to achieve a flow to it and everything felt on edge. It gave me a constant sense of FOMO as I never knew how long I'd actually get to make these decisions until another story beat overrode everything for 5 hours. It also made it feel like every decision was the wrong one, simply as there was so many options and so little time.

Three Houses solves this immediately by giving the social space a well defined structure: story missions happen at the end of the month. The rest of the time is yours to choose what to do with, inside certain parameters. This means I never feel blindsided by the plot, and when unexpected occurrences do appear they are exciting and, most importantly, short. It also helps that I'm connecting far better with the characters here, each of which is very well drawn, focusing on one or two thematic elements that are slowly played out as you get to know them. In fact, the only real issue I have with this side of the game is the Recruit mechanic which is the only time it feels the game is shepherding you into certain play styles.

The battles themselves are also super fun, surprisingly so for a series newbie. I'm playing on Classic/permadeath mode on the hardest difficulty which actually isn't that difficult. It means there's a decent frisson of tension to each battle without them being overly punishing. The rewind feature, clearly taken from Into the Breach, is also masterfully done.

It's probably my favourite game of the year so far.

The rewind feature was introduced in the previous Fire Emblem game which predates Into the Breach.

I do like the inspiration the game takes from Persona 5. Not sure which approach I prefer. Did get the feeling of FOMO during my P5 playthrough but I managed to max out all my social links with some time to spare. First time it felt possible to do so without a guide in a Persona game.

Meanwhile as I recruited more characters in Three Houses, it became challenging/tedious pursuing all the support convos I could get. Had to settle for finishing up the supports I had almost maxed out and focusing on original house members. Other supports would have to wait for another playthrough.

Ah that's interesting, didn't know they'd done the rewind before. It works really well so they certainly know how to implement it.

Back on with Hollow Knight, decided to wander a bit as I’m seemingly stuck on the Watcher Knights, mainly looking for more charms and charm notches. Got the long nail equipped now which might help a little bit, also upgraded my vengeful spirit spell after narrowly beating the secondary boss in the Soul Sanctum.

Edit, the Watcher Knights are still living :( loving the game but its really starting to wear thin that I can’t beat them.

Still playing FE Three Houses. I need to put more time into it. I'm about 30 hours in, feels like I've been playing it for less.

Still not sold on the monastery stuff tbh. But overall, I'm liking it.

To try and alleviate my hatred of the Watcher Knights I’ve decided to use a guide and see if I can head to the next location, as I can hopefully one of The abilities I pick up will help with the troublesome boss. Might be a bit of a controversial opinion as the game was obviously designed to be challenging but I really do wish it had some sort of easy mode, even if it just meant enemies dealt half damage or something and the rest was left alone.

Once you beat them you'll take that wish back I'm sure. The Watcher Knights are the crest of the difficulty wave in the game. Once you're past them, anything seems possible.

Also, no shame in a guide for Hollow Knight. It is so dense, but sometimes your time means more than aimless wandering.

Good to hear it’s probably the toughest part on a standard run through (no desire or time to get the maximum from it, these days I’m all just about reaching the end credits then moving onto the next game ), if it got harder I think I would pack it in! Exploring Kingdoms Edge now, just about to try facing off against Hornet again.

Also I have few issues with using a guide for any game I get hugely stuck on nowadays, when there’s the odd week that goes by when I don’t play anything I don’t really find it fun to be stuck for endless amounts of time when my gaming time can be so limited.

Edit, done the rest of it to unlock the basic final boss, back to the Watcher Knights now and I still hate them. I find them almost impossible to get through all 5 of them, most I’ve done so far is 3, load of crap. Think I’ll find a few more grubs so I can upgrade my nail again, if I don’t do it then I really might call it quits

The Watcher Knights are finally defeated :D only been trying solidly for about an hour to best them  onto the final (kind of anyway from what I’ve read) boss of Hollow Knight.

Edit, Hollow Knight complete! Loved it overall, obviously not a complete run by any means (a lowly 62% completion) but barring the Watcher Knights it always felt fair yet challenging, bring on Silksong :) wouldn’t be overly disappointed if they did want to include an easy mode for that one though......

Honestly I've been playing a fair amount of Minecraft; real fun game with the boys even in vanilla, especially if you can force yourself to see a build all the way through.

Shame the creator is the living embodiment of a fedora, though

Sea of Thieves was interesting to play yesterday. Having completed a mission and brought back three chests, I manage to sell off the most valuable of them before running into who I imagine were outpost campers [or someone looking for a quick score as soon as they've spawned in].

But the real fun was the lag. There I am just sailing along, when as the ship goes over a wave, the server desyncs and so my ship looked as though it was going for a dive. I was exploring an island and just jumping to places as the resync happened. I died and the game dumped me in the middle of the ocean without a ship. And best of all, I find a chest of sorrow, almost get it to my ship, then the game disconnects me.

I've been having a lot of fun with this again, so it'll probably last another month of playtime.

It's contentious; some would say Minecraft formed independently around deep sea hydrothermal vents

Cheers, cracking on with Bloodstained now, hopefully it’s not quite as hard in places as Hollow Knight!
