Zilnad wrote:Oh my word, Subnautica just clicked even more. Seems like I was wrong about the story progression being time stamped.

So I was sitting in the commander's chair, looking out of the window of my happy, little base while reading through all the info and notes on my PDA. And now I have a long note (on my IRL phone) of clues that I've picked up on and potential avenues of exploration to continue the story.

I'm so hyped to continue exploring now. I've got a couple of locations that I know are 800m and 1200m below sea level and so far I've only managed to explore up to 500m so I've got a pretty mammoth task ahead of me. I think my focus now will be on crafting some scanning equipment to try and map out my immediate area so I can locate building materials with more ease.

This game. My word

Your write up has me interested in this. Could you tell me if there is a lot of "racing against the clock" elements to the survival mechanic. I'm guessing there is, by the very nature of it being a survival game, but wondered how strict they are? Is it a continual race against the clock, or are there moments of respite?

It seems to be the only "racing" is to keep your thirst and hunger in check, which isn't even a race now that I have supplies in abundance.

I'd say it's actually a pretty chilled and relaxing game despite it being a castaway simulator. Definitely give it a try though, you'll probably be very pleasantly surprised.

I think I'm very close to the end game now but getting the last few things I need might still take a while.

I started it the other day. Good so far, but I haven't made much progress yet. Just figuring out how to stay alive.

There is an option to play with hunger and thirst turned off, so it's less of a survival experience. I initially thought about restarting in that mode, because it felt pretty stressful (by intent, obviously), but I'm getting the hang of it now, so I'll stick with it.

It's good there's the option to remove thirst and hunger but some of my favourite moments in the game have been special because of the need to plan my journeys around these resource needs.

Packing myself a lunchbox of cured fish and water before setting off on my longest journey ever was such a special moment that wouldn't have been anywhere near as engaging without the risk of dehydration and starvation looming over me as I set off into the unknown.

Now I don't even need to worry about it and I'm comfortable travelling to the deepest depths but, having started with nothing and being genuinely fearful of getting lost at any moment, the overall experience has been so much more memorable than it otherwise would've been.

Yeah, I can see how struggling, then getting past that hurdle is satisfying.

Talking of cured fish - not looking for clues or hints here - but I have yet to find salt deposits. Am I being stupid, or is it something you only find later on?

I wouldn't call you stupid but you should've found some by now. You should be able to find salt deposits in most places, including the starting area. They look like little, grey/white rocks sitting on the ocean floor. About the same size as titanium/quartz/etc.

Cheers, I'll have a look tonight. I've got loads of quartz and stuff. Even copper and silver, so I don't know how I overlooked salt!

Playing FFVII last night and made it to the final boss gauntlet. Setup Barret with mega all materia because I thought it would be useful, and it was for Bizarro Sephiroth.

Get to One winged Angel Sephiroth, he casts Supernova, reduced my party to under 1000hp. Barret gets confused from this. Shoots my party with Mega All Materia. Everyone dies.

I was strawberry floating raging

Basically why I never finish most JRPGs.

The final bosses of VII are pretty easy really though, certainly compared to some of the optional stuff.

Grindstone

My God this is habit forming and I love it, got it for just over 4 quid using the Epic Games £10 voucher (which gave me another voucher :toot:) .

I think it was Jawa who was raving about the Switch version a few months back and I can see why, its just so much fun.

Was actually going to play the Steam version the other day so I could install a few visual mods to make it semi appealing to the eyes but the mod I intended using only had a torrent link (which I don't use as I much prefer Usenet) so didn't bother.

I played a load of it when Apple Arcade launched. It’s a lot of fun, and a great balance of risk / reward gaming.

Booted up Xcom 2 on console and, my word, it runs like gooseberry fool. :dread:

Still an amazing game though

Snowrunner (Series X) - I got to the top of South Peak in the Michigan map last night. Took me 2 goes after overturning my trusty Chevy on the first attempt and around 30 minutes. Amazing sense of achievement. This game is so odd, really boring but also really riveting. I really need to tell myself that gripping the controller tighter doesn't give my truck more grip. Might stream some later.

Still Pokémon Sword, reckon I’m just over halfway through collecting the Legendary Pokémon in the Dynamax Adventures again, definitely not getting as much luck getting the opposite versions this time round as when I was doing the same in Shield (maybe Sword was a little more popular than Shield?). Also using Pokémon Home a lot, National dex is now up to 784 and I’m getting to work on trading for Gen 3 ones I’m missing.

One of my favourite games. Incredible. War of the chosen + mods for ‘a better...’ makes it even better.
