Super Mario 3D World (Switch)
First time playthrough; playing in co-op with my son and having lots of fun. Some of the levels/stars have been tricky wee shites though. Need to renew my Mario skills! Also, tried a little of Bowser's Fury in co-op, but it didn't seem that suited for two player; it's frustrating without the split-screen. Will stick to it solo.

Star Wars Fallen Order (PS4)
Hmmm. Just finishing up on Zeffo; it's OK I guess, but I really expected more. I'd seen some of the lukewarm responses in here before and would have to agree. An amalgam of other stuff that doesn't really stand out other than the whole Star Wars-ness of it all. Also, not much of a fan of the fighting (as yet) or fairly non-interactive worlds, but, the whole floatiness and precision of character movement annoys the hell out of me the most. The amount of times I've fallen to my death; especially missing bloody ropes from ice slides... Grrrr. Methinks it'll be finding its way onto ebay/cex when I run through it.

Dragon Ball Z Kakarot (NSW)
Literally just started it up and played part way through the opening, looks great on the Switch OLED screen, can’t really see much of a difference between this and the PS4 version I tried before. Seems cool but there seems to be a lot of progression systems to get to grips with hopefully that sort of stuff will click as play on.

Minecraft Dungeons (NSW)
Spookier Fall event is currently going on so jumped back onto this, still need to play all the DLC content as well at some point. Still love this really, great game to put on and do a couple of dungeon runs on.

I completed it earlier this year, but it took me a while. It's quite a forgettable game overall.

If I was a Star Wars nut I'm guessing I'd be enjoying it a lot more; but, yeah, it's just not doing much for me. Don't understand why it got such good ratings when it came out.

A game with a run animation that bad just can't be good. People give it a free pass because it's Star Wars but it's as forgettable and naff as The Surge.

Werewolf: The Apocalypse - Heart of the Forest

I'm really enjoying this visual novel. The writing is good, the mystery is intriguing and the artwork is glorious. I'm not sure how much your choices truly effect the story but the character sheet evolving as you progress is a really nice touch and makes it feel like your actions are impacting the world. I'm really looking forward to playing more.

Just started Divinity Original Sin 2 last night (partly because a friend recommended it, partly because I applied for a writing position at Larian and it'd probably be helpful for me to be familiar with their games lol). Started as Lohse but haven't really got that far yet because I spent ages getting used to the controls and also reset once because I nearly died fighting the guard and the prisoner and my character said something like "oh just woke up now I already have a bounty on my head" and didn't want to turn into a bloodthirsty criminal quite so early in the game. It seems like good fun though, all the characters seem interesting and likeable (apart from the Red Prince who just seems like a dick) and from what I've tried of combat it seems like it'll be really fun to dive into the tactics of it. Only quibble is that the controls take a bit of getting used to, I keep pressing X on a space expecting to move there and instead I punch thin air by accident lol

Thinking in terms of my main party I'm leaning towards taking Sibelle? Sebille? whatever her name is, Fane, and Ifan along with me, although I assume I'll need to swap in Beast and the prince at some point to try their stories.

Singled Out

Cheap indie pixel art 'lightgun' (mouse cursor) shooter which plays like a mad combination of Guess Who and Duck Hunt, its very simple in theory but quite tricky with the few second time limit in which you have to identify and kill your target.

That looks like good fun - although it's basically a single Wario Ware microgame!

I really need to get back into this - I got up to Chapter 3 a while back and then got distracted by other things. It's a really good RPG though, the story and characters were excellent through the parts I played and the combat has lots of depth to it!

A wheel is just so much more fun isn’t it! Really glad to see the old DFGT is back in use I think I’m probably ever so slightly quicker on my wheel than on a pad (definitely now as I barely use a pad, but subsequently don’t play racing games as often as I’d like) but I’m a bit more consistent with it due to it being more accurate than a pad, although games do generally play pretty well with a pad these days as I’ve tried F1 2021 with one. The main thing is definitely how much more immersive the experience is with a wheel.

I’m really looking forward to the new Forza with my wheel to be honest! Fingers crossed it’s out next year.

The common misconception is a wheel is a ticket to win, as in its a plug in and immidiately be quicker deal ( I thought it was the case back in the day). It's so different that it can take a fair bit of playing before you're on the same pace as you were with a pad. It's only when you take all the assists away and really become one with the controls that you start to get so much faster than you ever were with a pad. It's the micro corrections and subtlety you can never get on a pad that sets it apart.

Just struggling, had to travel to the other side of the map for a boss fight. Just got to the outskirts of the area & got slapped by a pack of lions. Really frustrating. That was like 20 to 30 minutes lost.

But I will stick with it.

It can definitely be punishing! Guessing you are playing the story/missions and not just the standard survival mode.

There probably is a fair amount of learning what you can and can't take on as relative danger of animals isn't always clear. Lions are definitely tough though! It can pay off to play stealthy.

I hope it clicks a bit more with you though, I hardly see anyone talk about the game and I want everyone to love it

Part of the misconception has to come from the fact you’re actually buying a wheel, whether it’s £100 or £500, you are going to tell yourself you’re loads quicker when you probably won’t be to start with, but as you said it’s all the other feelings you get from using a wheel that just massively surpasses a pad and makes it impossible to go back to for anything remotely realistic.

The world definitely seems like it's got a lot of thought put into it, I'm losing track of all the terms and characters that it seems like I'm supposed to know for story reasons lol

Done a bit more tonight, recruited Red and Ifan and beat up some loan shark type ruffians. Think I need to find a staff with a longer range though, seems weird to be stuck in melee all the time as a caster, especially since it means I occasionally hit myself with element effects by being stood in a pool of blood lol

Sat down and played my PS4 for a bit for the first time in months, decided to start playing Horizon Zero Dawn. It's fun but the dialogue scenes are both constant and overly long, and the character models are awkward to stare at for that long.

Regarding the steering wheel. I’ve spent a few hours in the last couple of days trying to use YouTube videos and other guides to set up a G29 on Forza Horizon 4, ready for 5 next week. It took me ages. Tried loads of different settings, but finally found the sweet spot.

The set up doesn’t work well for drifting. But it works well for racing now. I can race at a high AI level and win. It’s a lot of fun.

I was trying to set up the wheel for drifting and racing. But what clicked last night, is while a pad you can have that rapid direction change, the e-brake works. On steering wheel it’s impossible. The only way to drift is using a manual transmission with clutch…. Then use clutch kicking for starting drifts. So now, I’m set to racing, and in time and practice maybe I’ll move to manual gears and clutch.

Looks lovely still. Can’t wait for Forza 5.
