Working through Super Mario 64 on 3-D All-Stars for the Switch.
It hasn't aged well for me. Tiny, Huge Island can do one! And Tick Tock Clock is too brown.

Still pushing through with Control on PC at the moment, it's still a game that leaves me incredibly conflicted.

At times it's fantastic to play, the fights can be incredible with debris flying everywhere and the enemies presenting challenges that require you to mix up your powers to great effect. But a few minutes later you can find yourself in a tedious battle where the only viable tactics are to sit behind a pillar and slowly chuck stuff at your foe whose gooseberry fool AI makes them incapable to pathfinding a way to hurt you but if you step out to engage in "open combat" will rip you into pieces within seconds.

I've checked a guide and I'm just over halfway through at this point, hoping the back half of the game is more consistently strong otherwise I can see me not making it to the end which is a shame because many things about this have been well put together.

My feelings towards it are pretty much the same as yours, Jenuall. I just finished chapter 7 and I'm currently working my way through a big list of side quests before pushing the story forward but the bad may be beginning to outweigh the good, unfortunately.

When it works, it's great. But when it doesn't work, it's really frustrating. The amount of times I've died or failed a Bureau Alert because an enemy has spawned behind me and I've run into them has been infuriating.

I still really like it but the fact I've made a point of avoiding the DLC areas isn't a great endorsement.

I really want to like it, the opening setup was well done and the setting is really appealing to me, but it just keeps chipping away at my goodwill without doing enough to restore it as I progress.

Took a break from Sherlock Holmes to play some Monster Hunter World. After being bombarded with vast amounts of text, icons, explanations and introductions to random NPC's I'm starting to get the gist of the game: craft gear > kill monsters > get materials for more gear. Looks nice on PS5 too.

The talk of Control makes me want to go back and play some more. The gameplay loop was satisfying, impressive graphics and I liked how they'd intertwined real footage into the narrative. At the same time I'd echo the comments here about the side and timed quests being an absolute pain, and to me the story wasn't particularly compelling, even though it felt like it should have been.

Yep. I think alot of us are in agreement. There is a strange moment later on where a heavy rock tune kicks in, it’s brilliant..... it makes you wonder where this is for other parts of the game.

There are some great ideas, but there is some dross in there. I’ll probably finish it tonight.

I just got to this bit. And it was amazing but now I'm stuck in a room that has glitched out and made it impossible for me to reach the next room. :|

Just had to restart the game and the whole section after confirming that it was a glitch.

Kind of ruined what would've been the best part of the game :|

Vampire The Masquerade: Coteries of New York

Bought this visual novel in the sale and I'm really enjoying it. I'm a huge fan of The Masquerade universe but unfortunately have only ever had the chance to play two sessions of the tabletop RPG so I'm relishing the chance to exist in this world.

I really like that dealing with your hunger and using your powers has been incorporated into the visual novel format. It's good.

Steins Gate Elite

I have played the Vita version and Zero. The former is one of my favourite sci fi stories of all time, so am enjoying playing through it again with the anime aesthetic. Have not tried to redeem the code for Linear Bounded thingamyjig yet though, and i bought the game second hand so im expecting the worst.

Works lovely on remote play to vita (PS4 version). You can even select larger font text to minimise any HUD issues.

Star Wars Battlefront 2 - PC

This was a freebie on the epic store so thought I'd give it a try. It takes up tonnes of disc space and I couldn't care less about the multiplayer so doing the single player and that'll do me. Having to open the epic store and then it take ages opening the EA launcher before it starts is a soul draining experience though.

This sure is a Star War - the visuals from a technical point are impressive and the faces look brilliant, but wow that bit where you smash bugs as Luke is as dull as all the memes made out. Probably close to half way through already and it's fun enough to push on with, I just wish all the card guff from the multiplayer was kept out of the way though.

Shadowrun Returns keeps crashing during battles and it's starting to annoy me. This game is a little unstable.

Been playing Horizon Zero Dawn recently, coming up to 20 hours in and I’m really enjoying this game. The story is interesting and it runs great on the PS5. I have the Frozen Wilds expansion as well but I may save that for later this year.

WindJammers on hard is nails. Nioh 2 was also nails. Passing on that.

Detroit: Become Human's story telling device of jumping between characters became tedious very quickly. Cutting Markus's playthrough would have helped with that, or maybe extending the time we spent with each android.

I've settled on starting King's Quest. Again. After god only knows how many years, I have finally made it to chapter 2.

Deus Ex: Human Revolution
I still love this, and am still enjoying it, but I fear it's starting to get into "why is this game so long?" territory. It's not there just yet, but if it goes on much longer it will. While I'm admittedly taking my time with everything and not rushing at all, it feels like it's taken a loong time for the story to get interesting, and it makes me wonder how much more there is to it.

DmC: Devil May Cry
Started this recently. Seems decent so far, looks nice, combat is okay, although I'm only a level or two in and already one of the most annoying things in games has reared its head - when you're trying to explore a level, you come across multiple paths, you pick one, and the game then closes off the other sections because you chose that path and strawberry float you if you want to go back and fully explore the rest of the area. It's even more irritating when there are certain things to collect, and now you're unable to collect everything. :fp:

I love this game!

I recently bailed about 2/3rds of the way through DMC5 because I didn't find it that rewarding or exciting and the constant break in play for little cut-scenes really started to grate. I do however see that if properly committed to, it has so much depth and scope and possibility in its fighting combinations.

But for a basic b*tch like me I prefer DmC overall. Though its fighting system is more limited, I still find it satisfyingly chunky (if anything I think the moves have more weight in DmC) and I like the shoulder-trigger modifiers for angel/hellish weapons (I often wish this kind of thing was used in Zelda for less menu-ing!), it makes them really accessible without needing to toggle (and luckily in the definitive edition the forced weapon-type per enemy-type limitation was partly removed).

I also find its grungy, colorful, saturated visual style still really appealing and even the architecture warping stuff still feels cool with its dynamic camera angles and dolly zoom stuff (the angles and the sense of pull in the hookshoting stuff still feels great too). I still reckon the acting and delivery is nicely naturalistic and concise compared to 90% of games (you can tell this was a post-Alex-Garland/Enslaved game for Ninja Theory), whatever you might think of the story proper.

And frankly after playing DMCV I was pretty surprised at all the backlash DmC got on initial reveal. Though admittedly more tongue-in-cheek and cheesy than DmC, the vibe in DMCV wasn't even that different? Neo is similarly cocky and brash to DmC Dante, and even the menu soundscapes and piano chords used and so on all felt pretty evocative of DmC (or maybe they're through-threads throughout DMC franchice, I don't know).

And there's also better take-off speed and air-time in DmC Dante's jump.

Anyway I like it.

DmC and DMCV are equal in terms of quality and they're both incredible.
