Seems decent so far, looks nice, combat is okay, although I'm only a level or two in and already one of the most annoying things in games has reared its head - when you're trying to explore a level, you come across multiple paths, you pick one, and the game then closes off the other sections because you chose that path and strawberry float you if you want to go back and fully explore the rest of the area. It's even more irritating when there are certain things to collect, and now you're unable to collect everything.
I love this game!
I recently bailed about 2/3rds of the way through DMC5 because I didn't find it that rewarding or exciting and the constant break in play for little cut-scenes really started to grate. I
do however see that if properly committed to, it has so much depth and scope and possibility in its fighting combinations.
But for a basic b*tch like me I prefer DmC overall. Though its fighting system is more limited, I still find it satisfyingly chunky (if anything I think the moves have more weight in DmC) and I like the shoulder-trigger modifiers for angel/hellish weapons (I often wish this kind of thing was used in Zelda for less menu-ing!), it makes them really accessible without needing to toggle (and luckily in the definitive edition the forced weapon-type per enemy-type limitation was partly removed).
I also find its grungy, colorful, saturated visual style still really appealing and even the architecture warping stuff still feels cool with its dynamic camera angles and dolly zoom stuff (the angles and the sense of pull in the hookshoting stuff still feels great too). I still reckon the acting and delivery is nicely naturalistic and concise compared to 90% of games (you can tell this was a post-Alex-Garland/Enslaved game for Ninja Theory), whatever you might think of the story proper.
And frankly after playing DMCV I was pretty surprised at all the backlash DmC got on initial reveal. Though admittedly more tongue-in-cheek and cheesy than DmC, the vibe in DMCV wasn't even
that different? Neo is similarly cocky and brash to DmC Dante, and even the menu soundscapes and piano chords used and so on all felt pretty evocative of DmC (or maybe they're through-threads throughout DMC franchice, I don't know).
And there's also better take-off speed and air-time in DmC Dante's jump.
Anyway I like it.
