Why wouldn’t it?

I wasn’t sure how the new machines stack up against a current high end PC.

There's nothing official yet but the "rumored" recommended specs for PC are well below the next gen console specs, minimum more in line with current gen.

That is the Xbone X Series Deluxe X whatever launch date, right there. They’ve made Cyberpunk controllers, Cyberpunk consoles...it’s a hand in hand gig.

Honestly wouldn’t surprise me if they delaying it to enhance it for Series X to bolster its launch alongside Halo that’s quite a line up to advertise.

Roughly speaking the next generation consoles are similar in power to Nvidia's RTX 2080 or maybe better, which is almost the best "consumer" GPU you can buy right now. That said, both Nvidia and AMD will be releasing new silicon this year that looks like it should surpass that quite handily. No doubt those of us playing on PC will need to upgrade to RTX 2000 series or one of the new cards coming out because otherwise your PC won't have the featureset (such as realtime ray-tracing) to match the new technologies being brought to console. Those won't be cheap but then neither will the new consoles.

My hope is one of the reasons for the new delay is work on features to take advantage of next generation hardware more fully.

As others have said, this could be exactly the sort of game to help justify the purchase of a Next Gen console. Buying an XSX at launch and then knowing i have Halo Infinite to play "for free", along with any other Game Pass games i have not played yet that may have been tweaked etc starts making the purchase far more bearable. Especially as my 1X could then go in another room and i should be able to play the games on either console. Do we know if there is cross save between XBONE and XSX? Because this would give a massive use case to Smart Delivery for early adopters.

My thinking on the game suffering because it is a cross-gen release, was that this isn't Ubi, Activision, et al, putting out a yearly update. CDPR knows what's up when it comes to what players want and they'll do the right thing.

Yup (select info from a call about the latest delay):

They aren't worried about releasing so close to next-gen, confirming that backwards compatibility is possible on PS5 and XSX for the game
Game will run on PS4, PS5, XBO and XSX from day 1
Game will look better on next-gen consoles from day 1
Next-gen version is planned for 2021, "more robust update". Will be free of charge for those who own last-gen version

Full info and link to the call audio:

They confirm that press is playing the game as we speak in order to produce previews for the next week, 25th
Previews will be released when Night City Wire ends on 25th
"Read the previews" was said so video unlikely from press? (my own speculation!)
Press playing the game for previews are "from around the globe"
Press has access to build that has character creation, starts from the beginning of the game and has time limit, but no limits on what they can do in the game. Build is lacking things like some of the story content as CDPR wants keep stuff under wraps. Build has bugs in. (commentary: so no spit polished vertical slice to play, that is good)
They are streaming game from PCs to press to play because of COVID prevents in-person events
They expect next-gen consoles to release around same time, but they aren't worried about release titles creating competition for CP77 as release titles look to be different kind games
They keep being coy about number of expansions coming to the CP77, number of them will be announced "soon" as part of marketing campaign
Insisting that COVID and working from home situation aren't cause of delay, last stretch of development is just very demanding
They have seen increases in pre-orders of Cyberpunk 2077 every time some store that it has ran sale on other games
No plans for live events for the game at this time
CDPR doesn't do delays to try and reach arbitrary MetaCritic scores, they just want to release game when they feel quality is what they strive for
Multiplayer portion / version of the game is delayed proportionally to delay of CP77. CP77 is pushed back by X, MP part is pushed back by X

I'm okay with this and I'll be waiting to play it on next gen. I think TLoU2 will be the final "big game" I play on current gen.

In which case I'm going to wait for this "more robust update" before I play it, because I certainly won't be doing so twice.

They can't even confirm if the 'robust update' will drop in 2021...

I don't read those comments as confirmation that the PS5 will be out before 19th November, just that the version of Cyberpunk that releases on that date will work on PS5 as soon as the console does come out.

That said I can't imagine either of the new consoles launching much later than mid-late November.

There's no way the consoles aren't launching before Thanksgiving.

And I pre-ordered this on PC a few weeks ago, so of course it's delayed :x

Yeah, I'll definitely wait for the "more robust" PS5 version then. I've waited so long, I'm happy to wait even another year if it means playing the improved version.

I’m fine with them delaying it, this game will likely have legs so better to make it great.

CD Projekt Red say the next-gen versions will look better on day one, but is that through PS5/XSX backwards compatibility boosting or will CDP be creating a next-gen patch? I think I will wait for the ‘robust’ next-gen version but I wonder what this means exactly beyond resolution, better textures, raytracing, HDR, optimised loading?

Giving a solid date now seems kind of pointless as we're so far out.

I'd argue against that. It would make them seem incompetent if they now say they need to delay it, but don't look like they're in control of the situation and don't commit to something.

This way it looks like they know exactly how much work is needed, and how they're going to complete it. After previous delays another is a very risky PR move and they need to do everything they can to show it's not a Half Life 2 situation and the game is strawberry floated and they're just lying to everyone - giving a specific date is really the only way they can do this without showing the actual game.
