Cyberpunk 2077, the next game from The Witcher developer CD Projekt Red, is the biggest title the studio has ever made.

The sci-fi-flavoured RPG was originally announced back in 2012, but the Polish outlet has remained quiet on specificities of the project since.

Now it has been revealed that the title will be ever grander in scale than the third and final entry in the developer’s sprawling fantasy series, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt.

“Cyberpunk is far bigger than anything else that CD Projekt Red has done before,” visual effects artist Jose Teixeira told MCV. “Far, far bigger.

“We're really stepping into the unknown in terms of complexity and size and problems we encounter.”

The Witcher 3 became the fastest-selling game in the UK during 2015 upon its release back in May, but was overtaken by the launch of fellow open-world title Batman Arkham Knight one month later.

Teixeira continued by saying that The Witcher 3’s scope had helped the studio to refine its open-world formula for Cyberpunk 2077.

"The Witcher helped Cyberpunk quite a bit, because the game got so big and so complex that it really taught us,” he explained. “We really didn't know what was going to happen.

“If anything, working on The Witcher 3 was a really good and often brutal learning experience. Cyberpunk is going to benefit greatly from it. I can almost guarantee it.

"I have a lot of things that I want to change and do better the next time around, and I can guarantee that almost everyone in that studio has something that they go 'I did this this time, next time I can do it differently, I can do it better'.”

Unsurprisingly, Teixeira refused to give any clues regarding a potential release window for the title.

“The name of the game is Cyberpunk 2077, and we usually say the release date is 2077,” he joked.

On the one hand it's great to hear them talk about the game again, but this really is a case of bigger not being better. I loved W3 but a smaller, more... focused experience would be welcome.

If that means huge skyscrapers with loads of rooms I'm in.

If not, no thanks, I'm done with open-world games full of empty wasteland.

I don't know how you can say that when the we don't know anything about the game yet, even those quotes don't really mean anything. The scale and complexity being bigger doesn't necessarily relate to the size of the open-world.

Glad to hear it still exists, even though I think it's going to be a 2019 game at the earliest.

This is the big game that'll make me upgrade to next gen I think. The concept art for its setting is everything I ever wanted in a game.

So this is set in 2077? Doesn't seem like all that much would have changed in the next 60 years, maybe 2177 would have been better. When was Deus Ex: HR set?

Looking forward to this though, sure it'll be ace.

Those are Gwent cards. They from a mini-game in Witcher 3.

The gear on guy's head is probably something in-game as opposed to a pointer to VR. (Basing that on the fact it doesn't look like any VR headset we know of.)

I doubt it's meant to be a realistic continuation of our world, the original pen and paper game was set in 2020 after all.

Deus Ex: HR was set in 2027.

The problem with predicting the future is that, by definition, you cannot predict a scientific innovation until it has been discovered. I don't think I would realistically predict the state of technology more than ten years into the future with any accuracy. For all we know the technology Cyberpunk 2077 could be laughably conseravtive from the viewpoint of people living in 2077.

Apparently, CDPR have more people working on this than there were on Witcher 3 at its busiest.

Because CD Projekt is a publicly traded company, it is required to answer shareholder questions. Thankfully there is a thread on their official forums, where investors can do just that. One poster asked, how many people work on Cyberpunk 2077. The answer is music to my ears:

21.Na prezentacji wspomniano, że ponad 100 osób z game=devu pracuje nad Gwintem, rozumiem, że reszta pracowników pracuje nad CP2077 (minus wsparcie tech. dla W3)


Translation: "In your recent presentation you have mentioned, that there are over 100 people working on Gwent. I understand that the remaining employees work on CP2077 (minus tech support for TW3)"

Answer:

Nad Cyberpunkiem pracuje obecnie więcej osób z gamedevu niż pracowało nad trzecią częścią Wiedźmina w najintensywniejszym miesiącu.


Translation: "There are currently more game developers working on Cyberpunk 2077 than on The Witcher 3 in its most intensive month."

Seems like I completely ignored/forgot the fact this is based on pre-exiting, pen and paper roleplaying game.

Face to face, Mike Pondsmith is a storyteller. You've seen him before in a video promoting Cyberpunk 2077, but he's embarrassed by it. It was four years ago and he isn't anywhere near as moody in real life. If anything he's sassy, relishing in a story's build up before dropping his head and looking over his pencil-narrow specs for the punchline. He's easy company and seems to know everything, as game designers do. "You need to read everything; you will use everything," he says. "You eat mozzarella, you eat dough, you eat tomatoes and you spit out pizza." He's got a million silly sayings like that.
