Feels like a stretch to say that Blade Runner isn't cyberpunk. It's noir as well as cyberpunk - it doesn't have to be one or the other - and it goes deeper than the aesthetics as well. That's a separate issue though...

As for this, I felt slightly underwhelmed as well. It still looks great, but it gives off a very GTA (or similar open-world games) vibe at the moment . Once we see some gameplay and hear more about the RPG side of things I'm hoping it'll appeal more and carve out its own style. Music was great though.

As this game is named after and based on a tabletop RPG which is itself named after the genre it inhabits, I'd expect the specific themes under the cyberpunk banner to be explored rather than those from Blade Runner, which have more in common with Chandler et al.

EDIT: I am very hyped for this so I apologise in advance if I get carried away 'defending' it from imagined slights. It's not often I go full Photek but I think this might be one of those times.

My partner reacted with some derision to the portrayal of women in the trailer, as she did with the portrayal of women in Blade Runner 2049.

The way I see it is this: just because a piece of work includes situations of high gender inequality and the over sexualisation and exploitation of women as worldbuilding, it is not necessarily the fact that this work endorses this viewpoint. Running off the top of my head, just because Schindler's List contains Nazis doesn't mean it endorses Nazi ideology. It is the attitude of the piece's narrative towards these situations which is key. Cyberpunk as a genre is largely dystopic. No-one is happy in cyberpunk media. It's a shitty world full of shitty people and people fighting back against the shitty people. Although CDPR have strawberry floated up before (collectible cards for strawberry floating women in The Witcher series anyone?) I trust that they will stick to the conventions of the genre and continue the narrative that this world is gooseberry fool but that positive moral values and sentiments are worth fighting for.

I'm actually really interested to see how many gender options they allow for in the Character Creator. Wouldn't be surprised if there's a wide spectrum.

Is there a character creator?

It looked pretty much like you'll be playing as the guy in the trailer.

I like the Witcher's approach of roleplaying a well defined character, so I wouldn't be upset if there is no character creation. In the traditional sense that is, I very much want to install all sorts of augmentations into myself.

It’s been over 2077 days since we announced our plan to develop Cyberpunk 2077. We released a CGI trailer, gave some interviews and… went dark. Normal procedure for these kinds of things — you announce a game and then shut up, roll up your sleeves and get to work. We wanted to give you the Witcher 3 and both expansions first, which is why this period of staying silent was longer than we planned. Sorry for that.

As soon as we concluded work on Blood and Wine, we were able to go full speed ahead with CP2077’s pre-production. But we chose to remain silent. Why? At she point we made the decisions to resume talking about the game when we have something to show. Something meaningful and substantial. This is because we do realize you’ve been impatiently waiting for a very long time, and we wouldn’t like anyone to feel that we’re taking this for granted. On the contrary — it gives us a lot of extra motivation. The hype is real, so the sweat and tears need to be real, too :)

But to the point. Today is the day. If you’re seeing this, it means you saw the trailer. - our vision for Cyberpunk, an alternative version of the future where America is in pieces, megacorporations control all aspects of civilized life, and gangs rule the rest. And, while this world is full of adrenaline, don’t let the car chases and guns mislead you. Cyberpunk 2077 is a true single player, story-driven RPG. You’ll be able to create your own character and… well, you’ll get to know the rest of what show at our booth at E3. Be on the lookout for the previews!

Before we finish, you probably have some questions,

1. When?

When we told you we would only release the game when it’s ready, we meant it. We’re definitely much closer to a release date than we were back then ;) but it’s still not the time to confirm anything, so patience is still required. Quality is the only thing that drives us. It’s the beauty of being an independent studio and your own publisher.

2. How big?

Seriously big, but… to be honest, we have no bloody clue at this point in time. Once we put it all together, we will openly tell you what you can expect. And we promise we’ll do this before we start talking about pre-orders or ask anything of you.

3. Free DLC/Expansions/DRM

Expect nothing less than you got with The Witcher 3. As for DRM, CP2077, will be 100% DRM-free on PC.

4. Microtransactions?

In a single player role-playing game? Are you nuts?

Once again, thank you for your patience. If you have a minute, do visit cyberpunk.net and share your opinion (about anything) with us. We read everything you posted we treat it very seriously.

Yours,

CD PROJEKT RED Team

 Maf

It would be neat (or annoying, take your pick) if they had some sort of "stay out of the sun" meter where you can't hang around in direct sunlight for too long because the o-zone layer has been destroyed.

That sounds good.

As good as CD Projekt are, their main character creating is probably one of their weakest points.

I actually like Geralt, he's just not the absolute best they could have gone with.

They lifted him directly from the books, didn't they. Not much they could do if they were staying true to that.

I guess not.

Like I said, I think he's fine, but in a game as good as The Witcher 3, a more compelling character would have put that game over the top.

Sorry but what characters are suddenly more compelling the Geralt? Have I missed something? We are talking about the the same Geralt right? aka The White Wolf, The Butcher of Blaviken etc?

Yeah, Geralt was my very good boy. His dialogue was restrained, but the excellent writing meant there were multiple different versions of him you could play. All of which were good.

Don't know what I'm reading here. Geralt is one of the best videogame protagonists in the last decade.

I don't expect C77's star to be anywhere near as good, purely because you need to sacrifice some characterisation if you want to make them completely customisable. Hopefully they get around this by offering plenty of good supporting roles.

I said he was fine.

There was a lot of talk originally about him being too bland and uninteresting.

I never agreed with those comments, I just assumed that that was the common held belief.
