Cyberpunk is a dystopia of coorporations driven only by profit, all sorts of discrimination should be expected, especially when looking at fictional advertising by coorporations inside that fictional world. To be honest I don't want them to be good because that might suggest the world of cyberpunk is a good kind of future to live in!

I would also suggest the intention of the creators (of the game and of the genre) doesn't matter, it's all in the player's interpretation. Even if the american-japanese fusion orignally arose from xenophobic fears, I don't think that has any bearing on entries in the genre other than if you're analysing them historically as to how they came about.

I'd do the same, anyone who pronounces "th" as "d" is an idiot in my books.

Can't tell if troll or actually racist...

It's not racist, it's just poor pronunciation. Am I only allowed to complain when white people do it?

You just said anyone who pronounces them as dem is an idiot. That's strawberry floating racist dude, and I don't say that lightly. There are hundreds of pidgins and creoles that use that pronunciation.

EDIT; Is this stupid?

Racist my backside, it's nothing a few elocution lessons couldn't solve.

That's...a new strawberry floating low if I'm honest. I don't really know what to say to that.

EDIT: Nick being racist, not Hyacinth

Mocking the accents of an NPC in the game may make the character a bit of a twat, or worse a full on racist dickbag. But as others have said - this is a dystopian future we are talking about, I wouldn't expect to be playing as someone who embodies the purest of virtues of our current age and culture in such an environment!

Whether it says anything about the devs I don't know. But I still think it's an odd thing to pick up on, if the gameplay just showed the player barging in and killing all these characters it would have caused far less controversy implying that murder is less worthy of scorn than verbal mockery.

I'd suggest people read the RPS article that story came from. The criticism is much more complete than 'the PC is bad man'

Do we know if this is going to be completely first-person, or will there be the option for third-person shenanigans?

There's a third person option for driving at least.

Maybe this will be one of the ways the next gen version shows an upgrade.
I have a feeling the current gen version will be first person only.

Okay, I exaggerate, it's not all games. It is valid, of course. And it's a great thing that unwanted descriptions / appearances / scenarios are being challenged. Things should be called out and changed. It's a positive thing! I know that if developers / publishers didn't create "unpleasant situations" then we wouldn't have to talk about them.

Life beyond gaming is getting fraught as lifestyles and opinions are discussed and analysed like never before, and this is impacting everything; how we choose to live, how we interact and how we communicate. Things can go wrong and become tense so quickly.

I guess this stream-of-thought thinking is just my own frustration... I love video gaming and - to me - it acts as a form of "freedom" from real-life issues. And now gaming is a social, political beast just like real life. And this is reflected in GRcade.

I hope that folk have time to consider my subsequent thoughts rather than building a viewpoint on just that opening line. Anyway... this game sounds pretty neat, huh? Be nice to see some actual gameplay.

I feel exactly the same.

I don't think I'd survive in a Cyberpunk world as I'm just not flamboyant enough to go out in public dressed like pretty much anyone and I think I'd be more out of place in just trousers and a plain t-shirt. I also have a feeling that my British habit of saying "Sorry" to people even if they bump into me might not work in a society where everyone's ready to shiv you in the neck at a moments notice.

Yeah, I'm not saying that RPS article doesn't bring up what could be some perfectly valid criticism (again without access to the game in which to establish context and contrast this segment against the whole it is an impossible task), but it reads a hell of a lot like someone looking for things to get angry about.

The criticism is that the devs might lack the capacity to make factions/characters that aren't just one-note racist caricatures, I think? That the game may lack in interesting themes or nuance in writing and player resolution.

It's a legitimate worry and I am also not reassured by the focus on combat in every demo.

However that criticism is different to criticising the very inclusion of anything racist or in other ways discriminatory.

It's not wrong for the game to include things like that, but it's badly handled if the game does nothing to make the player challenge those aspects.

It's impossible to tell that definitively from demos alone

I agree with this.

My problem was Nick not only completely misrepresentating why people on ResetEra were upset but making what I consider to be at best horrifically colonial and at worst outright racist comments.
