The problem is when most people hear "cyberpunk" these days they think of stuff like Bladerunner, however I think the world of Knight City is more closely inspired by novels like Neuromancer by William Gibson (it reminds of the descriptions of the "sprawl" in those books). The tone is quite different as stuff like Bladerunner leads people to assume the genre is basically 'sci-fi noir' but it's actually a lot broader than that.

People seem to think a cyberpunk setting in broad daylight is odd, but that's only because they are thinking a completely different end of a genre with a pretty wide spectrum. I'm not saying Cyberpunk 2077 couldn't have noir elements but that simply isn't the main stylistic element at work here. That's fine by me.

Watched the 40 minute gameplay demo last night, after not having seen or heard much since the E3 trailer. Very impressive stuff, but I can see it getting quite overwhelming. It's enormous!

It's definitely very deep in terms of options, features and customisations assuming they don't cut too much from what we have already seen. I can see a lot of very unique character builds and play styles being possible. There's body modification and enhancement, weapon modification, various skills and buffs, clothing plus options of stealth/combat/negotiation when dealing with different quests with branching storylines. Hopefully they drip feed things at the start of the game so it's not overwhelming.

To say Destiny 2 was boring I’m in total agreement but if you’re saying the combat is also dull you couldn’t be more wrong. One of the most satisfying FPS shooters out. Cyberpunk hopes it can reach those levels in terms of gunplay.

I can see why the devs were so hesitant to release the trailer. Already you have people saying it looks dull and boring. We have barely seen anything. The reason combat was shown was more down to how bad the system was in Witcher games and to prove they can make a FPS that is satisfying. For me they succeeded.

Interesting article on the representation of Jackie

It feels as if the writing is screaming that this character is Latino, when the point to any character is that one aspect of their identity should not encompass their entire character. By inserting Spanish words in what feels like practically every other sentence Jackie says, the game seems to be trying to constantly remind you of his Latin identity in a way that is both extremely stereotypical and incredibly redundant;

Saw it first just after E3. I discarded it, decided to give the game the benefit of the doubt, but after seeing the footage I definitely see where it was coming from. The vast majority of Jackie's dialogue was needlessly peppered with Spanish, to the point where it was just annoying. I imagine if you're of Latin heritage it went beyond that and became a stereotype.

I don't understand how you can say the game was boring but the combat wasn't. That's all the game was, just shoot wave after wave of enemies of slightly different appearance, while some had shields that meant you needed different gun. Repeat.

I don't think Cyberpunk looks boring by any stretch, but the way the combat looks reminds me of a game that I found deeply boring. I've no doubt there will be much more variety in this than there was in D2, however.

Presumably it's a difference between the shooting mechanics (good) and the enemy and level design (bad)

It looks spectacular. I do wonder though if this will be a cross-gen kinda deal; this project has always sounded like it's pushing the current tech pretty hard.

Having seen it in action though, even with the absence of loading screens whilst maintaining such a high level of detail, I wondered whether this demo might've been running on existing hardware after all.

I've still not properly watched the walkthrough video, I want to go in to this one blind, so I can't comment on specifics but given the progression in quality of their previous work, culminating in the truly special Witcher 3, I am confident that CDPR will produce something wonderful here.

The dialogue and characterisation in TW3 was almost universally fantastic so despite some slightly worry reports on those aspects I'm willing to give them a pass for now.
