Yeah, I've mixed thoughts really. I think the reduction of transgenderism to 'chicks with dicks' is a very blokey way of looking at the world. The fact the dick is cartoonishly large doesn't help. But it does have a very dystopian retro-futuristic feel to it. If you saw it in the pages of Judge Dredd it'd fit right in.

So I don't know. I think those that find it offensive have their reasons. This isn't a Judge Dredd comic it's one of the largest pieces of mass market entertainment releasing in the coming year.

There was a thread on ResetEra complaining of xenophobia against the Japanese because of the Japanese logos on the buildings (movies like BladeRunner also featured this due to assumptions that the Japanese economy would overtake the US).

That forum's fast becoming a strawberry floating joke.

Or, you know, they're actually discussing a widely held view on the exoticism of Japanese culture in cyberpunk...

My first impressions would be that they're world building, and that would be how big evil corporations would advertise in a dystopian, cyberpunk world.

On the other hand, I'm a straight male and have no idea if it's that's offensive from a trans perspective. As well as that, I totally get there be more sensitivity on this subject with CDPR involved given their transphobic issues in the past.

The very tweet you included accuses the game of xenophobia.

No, it calls the exoticisation of Japan in western cyberpunk xenophobic. And then explains why. Did you read it?

This was a response thread which was equally as interesting; how the Japanese-US economic structure added to the othering of Japan in the 80s

Oh man. I'm getting frustrated that every video game has some sort of social / political issue that grabs the conversation.

Okay, I exaggerate, it's not all games. It is valid, of course. And it's a great thing that unwanted descriptions / appearances / scenarios are being challenged. Things should be called out and changed. It's a positive thing! I know that if developers / publishers didn't create "unpleasant situations" then we wouldn't have to talk about them.

Life beyond gaming is getting fraught as lifestyles and opinions are discussed and analysed like never before, and this is impacting everything; how we choose to live, how we interact and how we communicate. Things can go wrong and become tense so quickly.

I guess this stream-of-thought thinking is just my own frustration... I love video gaming and - to me - it acts as a form of "freedom" from real-life issues. And now gaming is a social, political beast just like real life. And this is reflected in GRcade.

I hope that folk have time to consider my subsequent thoughts rather than building a viewpoint on just that opening line. Anyway... this game sounds pretty neat, huh? Be nice to see some actual gameplay.

I'm basically hoping for an open-world mix of GTA, Deus Ex and Blade Runner. If it can give me that, I'll be happy.

Interesting threads regarding the Japanese influence on Cybepunk and its origins. I very much enjoyed reading through that although I don't think i'm 100% on board with the core thesis. But then the US is a nation that is very prone to fear of the other and protection of the known so it's not too hard to see why the genre would project a future in this way to play on those fears directly.

Is it ok if I just ignore all this political stuff and just enjoy the game :shifty: .

It's an RGP set in a fictional city of cybernetic killing machines I have a feeling they have more to worry about than a game cover art as they try and not be murdered horribly by some bored nerd who decides it may be a laugh to blow up half the city.

I knew there was a reason I don't own a phone as I bloody can't stand textspeak :x .

Politics has a place but I mainly just play these games to relax, I don't also need a lecture telling me what a horrible person I am.
I can get that at work :shifty: .

Are you...not reading this stuff on purpose?

The controversy is a white character mockingly imitating a creole accent by pointedly using 'dem' instead of 'them'.

I'd do the same, anyone who pronounces "th" as "d" is an idiot in my books.

Hmm. I think it is hard to know how to respond to something like this - particularly as none of us have actually seen or played the thing yet.

Are we not allowed to have characters who are "not nice" now? I wonder if this is a choice the player can make or if the dialogue mocking the accent is unavoidable? This character almost certainly has the opportunity to kill all these people as well (and probably does so in the gameplay people have seen!) - but I doubt there would have been much outcry about that. Is murder not as bad as mockery?

I just don't get the complaining.

The game is set in a future dystopia, it's cyberpunk for Christ's sake, I expect there to be racism, sexism, classism and transphobia, I want a game that's full of these ugly themes.

If people don't like it they should stick to Animal Crossing.

It's not racist to dislike poor pronunciation. Am I only allowed to complain when white people do it?

You just said anyone who pronounces them as dem is an idiot. That's strawberry floating racist dude, and I don't say that lightly. There are hundreds of pidgins and creoles that use that pronunciation.

EDIT; Is this stupid?
