I think the commentary of ‘I can’t believe gamers are getting upset by this’ is significantly louder than the actual upset it’s commenting on.

Well that was...hum. I dunno. Frustrating?

I just wanted to watch each of the runthroughs and instead got what was essentially a clip show with bad editing and needless video effects. It didn't give me any real impression of how the game will play, nor the atmosphere they're trying to build. The game itself, from the scant bits we could see, looked...fine. A lot less impressive than the first video but that's to be expected given that demo's aspirational nature. Don't know if it's just the video quality either but the graphics looked considerably less impressive too. But that's really hard to tell given the frenetic editing of the whole thing (possibly the point?). I came away from that less excited than I had been previously which is a failure on every level for a sizzle reel.

It still looks good. But that was a poorly made ad piece.

Agreed Taf, would have much preferred if they'd just sat back and showed some extended gameplay.

Attributes (Perks)

Body (Shotguns, Two-Handed, Melee, Athletics)
Intelligence (Hacking)
Reflexes (Blades, Rifles, Handguns)
Technical (Engineering)
Cool (Assassination, Nerve, Sniper Rifles)

These don't sound the best to be honest. There aren't many, and they're very combat focused (almost exclusively). There's not any kind of speech perk there, unless that's what Nerve means.

Yeah, I think Cool is typically the speech stat.

Watched it again so, more observations:

- The UI is messy as strawberry float. Like, straight up ugly. The attributes screen was nigh on incomprehensible
- The character creator looks extremely limited. 5 nose presets? The original 2006 Mass Effect had double that (although apparently a dev has since claimed the creator on show here was a limited version)
- I've never really minded hacking minigames but that one looked...really badly done?
- The boss fight looked like something out of Fallout; a bullet-spongey arena battle. Although the hammer throw actually made me flinch so that was cool.
- Nice to see Keanu Reeves' stunt double getting work here as the basis of Silverhand's character model.
- What little we saw of the outdoors area looked good. Likely scripted but the attack heli kicking gooseberry fool out of someone in that unfinished hotel was cool as hell.
- There was something...off with a lot of the animations. Nothing really looked as weighty as it should have.
- Shooting looks bad but I think everyone expected that.

From what I remember, Witcher 3 only had the one speech oriented ability and even that was usually just reserved for mind tricking your way out of extortion or something similar. I wouldn't say that CDPR have fostered an expectation that their dialogue has the same breadth of options as a New Vegas, for example, although that may stand out more here considering you're building a blank slate protagonist rather than working within the defined parameters of a character like Geralt.

Yeah, that was really unimpressive. The netrunner playstyle looked the most interesting, but it's basically just doing what Watch Dogs already does, and the hacking mini game looked seriously bad. Can't believe people still want to do those.

The shooting combat looks seriously bad. There's no weight to it, and that boss looked like a total bullet sponge, not even reacting to your shots at all.

It increasingly looks like a cross between GTA and Watch Dogs in first person, with all the worst Sci Fi tropes thrown in there. Are all the gangs going to be based around lazy racial stereotypes? Maybe some Jewish cyber finance criminal gang, or an Asian martial arts gang? Maybe this is all true to the source material, because I'm not familiar with it, but it's reminding me of a lot of things I don't like about Sci Fi.

What's really weird is that the Voodoo Boys in the original TTRPG were far more interesting than the one shown here: they were white-boy drug dealers who affected Haitian tropes to appear cool. They were intentionally ridiculous, a spotlight on meaningless cultural appropriation and super low level.

The Animals are completely new to the lore and you can 100% guarantee whoever thought that moniker was a good idea is white as strawberry float. It's potentially controversial from a racial point of view as well as just...lazy.

I've been saying from the start that this dumb game is gonna suck but, like Cassandra whose spirit clearly inhabits me, Apollo has spat in my mouth and my prophecies are ignored.

Yep. Lots of people patting themselves on the back and posting about the hated gamers.

We should migrate GRcade to Flarum. :toot:

It actually looks like a real game you could play now. HYPE INTENSIFIES.

I'm not really upset that it looks less slick than the demo. It was pretty obvious that actual game would not be like that. Yes, it does look a little clustered but then a lot of games look like that when you are not familiar with the systems and there is still a lot of fine tuning to be done before release. Combat is... well, about par the course of an RPG like this I'm afraid. However, if I could live with the awful system in Fallout 3/NV and like both games I'm sure it won't be an issue here.

Not saying it will definitely be amazing but I'm not going to be too critical at this stage.

Imagine if it's actually bad. Just imagine.

Is there a game with this level of hype that turned out rotten before? Daikatana maybe. Rise of the Robots?

Did anybody ever really get excited for rise of the robots?

Daikatana always had a whiff about it as well, particularly as time dragged on!

I'm avoiding watching the video for now, going to wait on review impressions and then hopefully go in blind if the reception is still positive.

It was just on the cusp of my interest in games but from what I remember RotR was the most expensive game ever made at that point, with a huge amount of potential and was massively anticipated. That it ended up being not just bad but almost unplayable what a huge surprise I think.

I remember it's buildup and release on the Amiga back in the day but I don't recall the hype ever being quite so lofty for it.

That's not to say expectations weren't high, it had some top names involved and there was certainly a buzz about it, but it didn't feel like the Cyberpunk of its day!

I remember watching coverage of it on Bad Influence and Gamesmaster, and reading about it in gaming mags. Of course it wasn't quite the cultural peak level of expectation that Cyberpunk is courting, but for the fledgling hobby of gaming I remember it being a real event.

I'm calling it now, this will get an Edge score of 3/10.

I'm still not cancelling my pre-order though :shifty: .
