Hopefully the 1st of many 3rd party games.

I'm a bit confused by CDPRs statement. Going by the news from Phil Spencer posted in the XBOSX thread - and as mentioned in the Xbox tweet above - it sounded like all Xbox games would run better on the newer kit; there didn't appear to be a suggestion that you'd have to pay for the "upgrade". CDPRs talk of "free" could maybe suggest that some updates won't be free?

I really hope that publishers don't charge for "upgrades" on the newer systems.

It's really not that complicated (no doubt you have me blocked so won't read this but)
Xbox Series X will run Cyberpunk at a higher resolution yes (without touching the actual game code and it has nothing to do with the game devs) but CDPR are also providing additional features for Series X (I presume a higher framerate, higher resolution and higher definition textures) as part of the Smart Delivery malarky. They don't have to boost anything at all, but they are.

Sea of Thieves has already uses this 'smart delivery' so the same game has a much smaller install on base Xbox compared to Xbox One X (4K texture work mostly).

Knoyleo wrote:That Microsoft tweet reads like it's just saying that Xbox One games, when played on Series X, will run better, but they'll still be the same version of the game, with all the same files. The CDProject tweet sounds more like owner's of the Xbox One version, will also get the upgraded version that will be released for the X Series, so a technically different version of the game, with higher quality assets, etc.

Harmonix did the same with Rock Band DLC. Any DLC you bought on Xbox 360/PS3 for Rock Band 1/2/3 was linked to the Xbox One/PS5 versions and you got all of the new features from the new game. They are two separate products but linked together. So if you bought them previously they were there waiting to be downloaded on the new console.

I agree!

Jenuall wrote:...CDPR don't deserve anything but praise for their approach to DLC compared to the rest of the industry.

...I don't agree quite so much :-) . The thing that got me was that CDPR did a lot of shouting about "all DLC is free" and indeed they did release a number of free items; that was great. But then two paid add-ons released; pretty much as with any other AAA game nowdays. Sure, they were very good - maybe even excellent! - but it didn't, for me, tie up with the high amount of noise about all DLC being free.

I'm being a bit niggly, I know. CDPR did a way better job with the DLC for that game than most other publishers have with their games.

I think they could have done better with the messaging on the free DLC campaign at launch, but it was very clear even then that the expansions were a separate thing.

I wondered if my mind was playing tricks on me... but, having checked, I don't believe so, Jen!

We expect support if we encounter any problems, we love updates constantly improving the experience, and we feel really special when we receive free content that gives us more than we initially paid for. It doesn’t have to be huge, it can be an awesome skin for a character, or an extra sword, or armor.
Unfortunately this treatment is quite rare these days. As gamers, we nowadays have to hold on tight to our wallets, as surprisingly right after release, lots of tiny pieces of tempting content materialize with a steep price tag attached. Haven’t we just paid a lot of cash for a brand new game?
As CD PROJEKT RED, we strongly believe this is not the way it should work and, with The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, we have decided to do it differently. Cutting to the chase, everyone who buys Wild Hunt will receive 16 specially prepared DLCs absolutely for free, regardless of platform. You don’t have to pre-order, you don’t have to buy any special edition to get them — if you own a copy of Wild Hunt, they’re yours. This is our way of saying thank you for buying our game.

I applaud CDPR for making the sixteen pieces of content free (although another angle would be to ask why they weren't just included on the disc if they were known about this far ahead of launch)... but the text suggests that gamers shouldn't have to pay more for content. No additional content for the game was mentioned at this time. It feels like this idea was then changed a bit when - six months later in April 2015 - paid expansions were announced - click for source.

Don't get me wrong; I think the paid content offered great value. But, looking back, despite that initial bluster from CDPR that went on to get huge coverage in the gaming media, the end result is that the game included some free items... but also had paid content much like any other AAA game.

Not sure what angle you are looking at that from Jawa but I think that text is backing up my position more than yours!

That message references "lots of tiny pieces of tempting content" which appear "right after release" - they're not talking about large expansions here.

The message even spells it out - "everyone who buys Wild Hunt will receive 16 specially prepared DLCs absolutely for free, regardless of platform" Where's the confusion there? That was what they said and is exactly what happened.

If it said "All additional content that we ever make for Witcher 3 will be free!" then I think there is a case to be upset, but that wasn't what they said! :D

That's a reasonable shout, Jen. I think a part of the issue was that some gaming media news outlets kinda reported it as "Witcher 3 DLC will be free!"; they didn't look closely at the detail. Maybe that is a mark against them more than CDPR. I wonder if CDPR didn't play out the story anticipating that kind of reporting but, hey, that may be a bit cynical on my part.

I'm just hoping the series X can add 300 times more lens flare as that always makes things much better.

I want my corneas on the brink of melting at all times  .
A bit like that scene from Sunshine where they try looking at the Sun but even brighter.

Oh yeah I think there was definitely scope for misinterpretation in there, and a big release like TW3 was always going to see news growing arms and legs so I think CDPR could have tried to keep the story more grounded in reality once it was out there!

I think they were probably a bit naive in trying to maintain a distinction between DLC and "Expansion" in a world where they had basically come to mean the same thing!

Haha, they need to get JJ Abrams on the case then. :datass:

I'm sure there was a time in the past where film directors used to get associated with gaming technology more than they do now. I vaguely recall George Lucas or maybe Spielberg being name dropped around the time of the PS2 announcement, talking up the powers of the legendary "Emotion Engine"!

Does this sort of practice not throw a spanner in the works of the bean counters, the where-is-my-profit moneymen financier overlords? Because the game gets launched with a POW!, but surely a fair proportion of people would just wait to play the better version? Or am I wrong, and most gamers accept half-cooked ropey versions of an artists intended product? Not me.

I think what they're hoping for is that more people will pick up the game early knowing they're going to get a free upgrade rather than possibly wait for a next gen remaster. I'm sure the game will have paid for DLC and they'll find a way to make some more money later. They must have decided the extra goodwill from fans from this move is more worthwhile overall than possible sales of a next gen version.

Well if they can get the game running on a vanilla PS4 or vanilla Xbox One to the point where an unbiased Digital Foundry type is like ‘this is fine’ then fair play to CDPR, miracle of engineering and all that. But it’s just not going to happen.
And as well, if it was going to be a 10-12 hour sort of deal like Resi 4 was, then fine - smash through it and wait 12/18 months to play the proper version, cool. But if you’d had at it for 90 hours, you aren’t going to pony up for the proper version straight away.
I keep using the word proper deliberately because they’ve effectively announced a remaster of sorts before the ‘base’, ‘original’, ‘vanilla’, ‘version 1’ strawberry floater has even come out.

I suppose it depends on how confident you are they can make a game for current hardware that's worth playing. I'm pretty confident they can but I can see your side in that it's going to be a tough ask to get a game with the ambition they've spoken about to run on a base xbox.

Only time will tell I suppose and one of us will be right and at the moment I don't think we can say who it will be as your point is valid.

Who would have thought they would get Witcher 3 working on Switch? I absolutely think the base PS4 and X1 versions are going to be heavily compromised but they will be "fine".

In terms of pleasing the bean counters there is little downside to this approach - the install base for the existing consoles is huge, that is where the big money will be made so there is no real option but to release on this generation as well as the next. I really cannot see that many people waiting and not buying the game until the PS5/XSX are out, but even if some people do then that just spreads out their revenue and gives the game a longer tail in terms of sales. Plus going down a "buy the game once, play it across the generations" gains them a nice dose of goodwill amongst the players, and that is something that CDPR have always (wonky messaging around Cyperpunk notwithstanding) been good at and benefited massively from.

That was a general "they" as in "who would have thought that anyone could get it working".

Although I think it has been confirmed that CDPR were fairly hands on in assisting Saber as well. ;)

I wonder how long we'll have to wait for the free Series X upgrade?
Will Microsoft chuck them a few quid to get it out at launch as a showcase game or will they take longer and try and get some super duper upgrades?

MS have the marketing rights so I think it'll come out at the XSX launch.

Been watching Altered Carbon over the last few days and whilst it's nothing particularly special in terms of story, HOLY SHEEEIT has it got me pumped for Cyberpunk 2077 - the set design, world building and special effects are spot on and I can't freakin' wait to get this :datass:
