I softened the front a little and it's made the ride down a bit nicer.

I'm happy but pissed off this evening, I got held up in 5 separate places tonight, all of which requiring a foot down and waiting for cars to pass, move out of drives and to generally clear, yet I was full of beans and really felt like I was on it. I passed two guys with mountain bikes half way back who were pushing theirs, who said well done and i was much fitter than them (which was nice) and when I got back I checked my phone to see i'd broken my uphill PB by 8 seconds, taking it to 19.52. But without the stops i reckon i'd have been close to a low 19, possibly even dipping under :x

Definitely getting fitter quickly though.

You should check out Strava to see how you compare.

I don't want to go down that rabbit hole. Trying to beat my own best every day is enough I think.

Do many here have experience with folding bikes? I'm being forced to move location for work, which currently involves around an hour and a half in all of walking to and from bus stops. I'm going to miss being able to cycle the whole journey, but I'd much rather have a bike to cover the walking bits.

Obviously, the big name is Brompton, but are they actually worth the ridiculous price in terms of build quality, or are you paying well over the odds for the name? I do think I prefer how they fold (compared to the Dahon's, which seem to be the biggest competitor). Evans Cycles are currently offering £100 off one if I trade in any old bike (cheap halfords one I have had lying around for years would do).

Cheers folks.

I haven't used them but there was a TV show on the BBC about then and they looked really really well made and all by hand so I think they probably are worth the cost.

Might wpbe worth seeing if your work has a cycle to work scheme will save you a heap.

Did a 19.20 today, that's a full 31 seconds faster than my previous PB :toot:

Surely a sub 19 is realistic in the coming months.

They're not going to be remotely fast due to the Beadle wheels, but it say it's worth paying the extra for a decent name one, mainly because the folding mechanism is so central to the whole thing, it needs to be safe and secure.

Random question from a very on/off cyclist (I keep meaning to get out on my bike more but sadly seem to be lacking in motivation to get out currently).

When I was driving home earlier I saw some cyclists and a moped clearly engaging in some motorpacing, the lead cyclist was about 2 inches off the mopeds bumper. My first thought was I'd never seen it done before on a public road but then the more I've thought about it the more unsafe it seems to do on a public road (road in question being fairly busy, steady flow of traffic in each direction in a relatively busy village) and how it could turn from a good ride to a huge accident in a blink of an eye as all it would take is for a kid to walk (for example) out into thw road causing the moped rider to slam on potentially causing a crash. Granted in the scenario I experienced 4 of the 5 riders would probably escape unharmed but who can say for the lead rider? Could easily crash into the rear of the moped unless his reactions are insanely quick as he was ducking his head down as well which I imagine limits your field of vision a bit.

So basically is it actually legal on UK roads? My first thought would be a no but I thought I'd ask here as one of you might know how it stands from a legal standpoint, I can see the obvious benefits of training like this but for myself the potential risks would outweigh the rewards.

Seems like the equivalent of tailgating with cars, which is illegal I think.

Yes, tailgating is illegal not that it stops drivers from doing it mind.

I was just surprised that people would actually partake in such an activity on a relatively busy road, it could be bad enough on a quiet road where you don't get much traffic but if an incident occurs but then the cyclists and pace setter are only putting themselves at risk should an issue arise.

What is it? Slipstreaming for more speed or something? Sounds suicidal whatever it is.

You normally only see it in actual cycling events either to try and get a rider back to the main group or to pace the riders in a discipline on a velodrome track before letting them go at it (can't recall the actual name off the top of my head). But yes the rider effectively gets in the slipstream of the vehicle to up their pace by not having the wind resistance going against them. Apparently (according to google results anyway) it's a good training method for some aspects I can't recall (didn't exactly look at it for long). I agree it does sound slightly suicidal though, don't think I'd be in any rush to try it even if I felt physically able to do so, not that I'm currently fit enough right now anyway!

That and they can maintain a speed over a certain distance for training. Crazy to do it on a main road that's busy.

I'd have thought it was pretty crazy to do it on an even remotely busy road even if you know it well, as you never know what might be round the corner or what you might come across.

I suspect the person was going for a KOM on Strava.

If you know the area, you can look it up and see the latest times.

Got myself a cheap Specialized Crosstrail Ultra to start using for work, needed a little bit of TLC, sorted the brakes, lights and handbar grips which needed replacing yesterday and decided to have a go last night which was the first time in over 5 years on a bike. Nice ride apart from the banana split who decided to not look in any mirrors and see the big bastard on a bike with bright as strawberry float lights coming along the road. Just managed to turn my head to the side as the top corner of his opening door scraped back the skin on my cheek and then stabbed it. Didn't realise how bad it was till I got home and had a lovely bloody beard.

The twat :x

wow that sounds like a lucky escape :dread: worth reiterating stay out of the door zone as much as possible - not to say this incident was your fault or anything

People are strawberry floating dicks when it comes to cyclists. I wear head to toe florescent clothing and still every strawberry floating day some clown be it on foot or in a car will walk in front of me, generally get in my way, act surprised when I'm right on them despite facing me for a while. On Thursday some woman nearly t boned me pulling out of a t junction. I could see it coming too so slowed right down and was saying over and over "don't do it DON'T DO IT DON'T DO IT" and I could see her looking left and right, looking right at me and she STILL started pulling out just as I got there and then stopped half way out. I mean was she expecting me to strawberry floating stop for her or something?
