Title: D4: Dark Dreams Don't Die
Publisher: Microsoft
Developer: Access Games, aka Swery65, or Hidetaka Suehiro
Console: Xbox One/PC (Digital Download)
Release Date 19th September 2014 for Xbox One. 5th June 2015 for PC.
Price: £11.99 for the prologue along with episodes 1 & 2. $14.99 for PC
Controls: "D4 supports Kinect gestures, but I felt completely comfortable using a controller the entire time (the analog stick controls the cursor like a mouse), and didn't feel like I was missing anything."

David Young is a former narcotics officer turned private detective, mourning the murder of his wife - Little Peggy - and on the case of a mysterious new drug sweeping Boston, Real Blood. He lives with a woman who thinks she's a cat, and works alongside Forrest Kaysen, a gluttonous detective with superhuman eating skills. Also, Young can travel back in time using magic objects called Mementos, and there's also a fashionista who talks to a mannequin. Oh, and a guy with a knife and fork ... and surgical mask.

Swery65, the mad genius behind Deadly Premonition, is back, and this time he's got a Kinect-powered take on the kind of game usually peddled by Quantic Dream.

Though D4 (alternatively known as Dark Dreams Don't Die) can be used with a standard controller, the game is quite clearly designed with Kinect in mind, and this is one of those few games in which I can say motion controls are the preferred method of input.

Free downloadable costumes will be made available each week after the game launches - announced every Monday and made available every Wednesday - which will tie into other well-known titles.

D4 Reviews

9/10 from Destructoid -

D4 has me intrigued, mostly because I felt a genuine attachment to the characters. I want to see this journey through to the end, and the classic Swery wackiness kept me interested throughout the relatively familiar adventure genre gameplay.

http://www.destructoid.com/review-d4-da ... um=twitter

4/5 from The Escapist -

I was worried that, following Deadly Premonition's cult success, Swery65 would struggle with an all-new followup, perhaps trying too hard to be quirky, or otherwise failing to live up to the bizarre bar he set in the last outing. D4's opening episodes, however, have smoothly alleviated such fears - not only is it a competently made adventure game with solid motion controls and a crazy plot, it's also a great comedy action story that marries the macabre and the eccentric in a way that just feels so very natural.

Swery65 doesn't have to try. It's clear now that this insanity is just what he does, and he does it so damn well.

Bottom Line: D4 is ridiculous. It's weird, and silly, and makes very little sense. It's also hilarious, and packed with some of the most engaging motion-controlled sequences I've ever played. Coming from someone who generally doesn't like the Kinect, that's a damn big achievement!

Recommendation: A potential must for Deadly Premonition fans, and worth checking out for anybody who wants a strange, strange adventure game.

8/10 from CVG -

D4's storytelling shouldn't be overlooked. Within the framework of a crime procedural it touches upon the nature of obsession, the heartache of lost love, the seductive ideal of changing the past, and even the fickleness of fashion. If it isn't always consistent, it's certainly never boring, and often gives you something to think about.

8/10 from Hardcore Gamer -

D4: Dark Dreams Don’t Die is one of the more pleasant surprises of the year. When one hears “bizarre episodic mystery title that uses Kinect,” a high-quality product isn’t what immediately comes to mind, but that’s exactly what D4 is. It feels like a Telltale Game on LSD, which couldn’t be more of a compliment. This is a mystery that’s hard not to get sucked into, as its “anything goes” logic will leave players wondering what’s going to come next. From its insanely quirky characters to its underlying tragedy, D4: Dark Dreams Don’t Die is oddity done right.

7/10 from Polygon -

I love a game that can surprise me, show me something I've never seen, so the chance to experience something completely otherworldly in a game is really difficult to pass up. If you feel the same way, maybe you'll be willing to push through some of the cruft to get to the delightfully weird bits of Swery65's latest. But it's a bummer that the biggest impediment to all the good D4 offers is D4 itself.

No score from Eurogamer -

We'll hold off on a final score until the full season has been released, but for now D4 is a game that confirms Swery as a truly eclectic and distinctive outsider artist. In a medium that so often lazily co-opts the language of cult cinema, or pays surface homage to pulp fiction while missing its offbeat heart, that's something worth celebrating.

That's my GOTY right there. Fantastic game.

Liking this game so far. Playing with Kinect and haven't had any major issues. Pretty cool.

This game's pretty great.

Turns out all SWERY needed to do was make his own take on a Telltale game!

This game is amazing. I have had an Xbone since launch but have literally not bought a single game. This is my first real Xbone purchase and I'm loving every second of it.

Going to end up on my GOTY list for sure.

Highly recommended.

yeah, this game is amazing

this is bloody incredible.
Oh and this game alone fully redeems Kinect. Goodness, I'm legit blown away, It's perfect. There's literally no other way to play it.

I really do consider this to be one of the best games I've played so far this year.

GOTY material right here!

GOD TIER game, so much fun and full of charm.

I only got to play the prologue tonight, but wow, it's been amazing so far

Don't care how knee-jerky, honeymoon-phase this sounds...this is my GOTY so far.

News on this game had gone so quiet I was sure it'd be due for a 2015 release. It's not often you get the sort of surprise announcements out of nowhere that a game is due out tomorrow/today after months of no coverage at all. Even though initially I was looking forward to playing this with Kinect when it was first announced, I am glad that it sounds like it's perfectly playable without it.

£11.99 seems a decent price for two episodes and a prologue (definitely smart to release something like this as a DD i think). I'm looking forward to playing this as there's no doubt there's nothing like it on the Xbox One. Looks absolutely crazy but in a good way  I reckon this could be one of those word of mouth games that sees downloads/sales slowly increase over time. Hopefully too poor sales doesn't mean we won't get the rest of the episodes.

Where is the promotion for this game? Especially as it appears to be very good. :fp:

Swery explained the surprise release, "TGS is the best place to highlight D4 that has been developped in Japan. Also, I wanted to do like Steve Jobs."

Not that it would get much PR anyway.

CVG gave this an 8.0 out of 10

It's definitely a game that'll split opinion. From what i've played so far it's nuts but at the same time i like it. I'm playing it with a controller and while you can obviously tell that Kinect is the ideal way for it to be played, the controller seems to work fine so far. Movement does take getting used to.

Is this an exclusive or is it going to be on other platforms eventually? Well, obviously not PS4 as MS are publishing but possibly PC.

"Please don't expect to be able to play D4 on any platform besides the Xbox One."

I played the first episode last night with Kinect and I am a bit sore this morning, I think my baseball bat swing needs work.
Everybody please play this game. It's crazy, it's awkward, it's nonsensical, it's bizarre, it's hilarious.

Sold.

Went to buy it and it had videos that people had put up (great feature of X1 store btw), seen the guy spit chewing gum at a knife to stop it hitting him!

I'm gonna like this!

Yep. We need more stuff like this. It's great to see people responding so positively to it.

Downloading this now. Is £11.99 going to be the total purchase price? Or is that just for the first part and more will come later as a separate purchase?
