In the past whenever he noticed a friend was drifting towards the right and anti-semtism, he'd take them to Buchenwald which usually sorted things out.

That’s a very good tactic, actually. I think the idea of actual Nazism has become an abstract concept in a lot of people’s minds nowadays because we’re quite removed from everything that happened and didn’t see it with our own eyes. A stark reminder like a camp visit can shock some of the cobwebs away.

Or they might just want to go to the Nazi theme park.

Whilst yes it is an excellent idea, he is of the opinion that Hitler was a left wing nutter and the horrors he put upon the world are what Trump and his ilk are trying to prevent happening again, he does not the think the kids in cages is a bad thing as they have a country they could live in :|

Aw man, that was always Cal’s Line of argument - the “Socialist,” part of National Socialist took precedence over the Nationalist, even though there’s not a hint of left wing thought in Hitler’s ideology.

It may be worth pointing out to him that Hitler immediately purged most of the left wing element of the Nazi party upon coming to power during the night of the long knives?

Well Cora if it wasn't really socialism why was it called National Socialism? SJW CUCK DESTROYED WITH FACTS AND LOGIC.

---

Suzz, part of your kid's misunderstanding could probably be fixed through reading a little more history in general? A lot of these alt-right types think they know a lot about history and politics, but they get it all from memes, Pepe avatar Twitter accounts, and racist Nordic bodybuilders on YouTube. I would be tempted to express an interest in the history side of what he's saying, just asking questions, maybe offer to take him to Waterstones and buy some books about the second world war. If he reads an actual, genuine history of fascism (and is able to accept it, which might take time...) then that would probably make him more averse to contemporary movements that resemble it.

Being a person of colour. I’ve had my fair share of racist experiences. None of which were fun. But i realised that the ignorance and the hate displayed all came down to a lack of knowledge and pointing fingers at the wrong folks for whatever ails them.

Everyone seems to forget the British Empire wanted folks of colour to come here and work for low wages and shitty conditions. It wasn’t that long ago when people had signs up saying no blacks, no tans and irish.

It’s easier to point the finger at someone who has different religious beliefs or skin colour than it is to do your research. Figure out truths that require reading between the lines etc.

I think there’s been a massive shift over the years in terms of equality and promoting diversity. It’s a cumbersome way of saying it. But gone are the days when white men position of power was absolute. There’s change in the air and privilege that used to exist is being eroded slowly.

Does your kid worry about the future? A lack of job opportunities. The abysmal way the country is being run. The NHS being underfunded etc? I think trying to understand what his issues are and why is the most important step to take first.

If you’re showing videos, and he’s made that comment about kids in cages. It might be worth getting him to watch Hasan Minaj’s patriot act on netflix. The episode about the NRA’s global impact is mind-blowing.

There’s a book he should read. Which is easy to read, easy to digests and will probably question his beliefs. It’s called Natives by Akala. It basically spells out that it’s not a race thing. It’s not even a class thing. It’s about power and wealth and we’re all suckers.

Hell it’s a book everyone should read, regardless of colour and class.

Go to 6:54 for the relevant "BUT THE NAZIS WERE SOCIALISTS" bit, but the whole video is a pretty good explanation of aligning political ideologies, and why they lie where they do, but told in a more typical Youtube style, rather than a dry educational one, if that's more what appeals to your son.

Genuinely Suzz, if you want some recommendations on the history of fascist ideology in the 1930s, or right-wing politics etc more generally including the rise of conservatism in the United States(which is definitely relevant), please drop me a line. Some of it might be a bit of what Knoy's termed as "dry and educational," but it might be worth you guys looking at some literature together if either you or your son is genuinely interested in the workings of right-wing politics and wants to know more. I'd try and steer away from YouTube, personally, but I'm no expert at influencing the youth of today.

Everyone in this thread should read Ian Kershaw's biographies of Hitler(Hubris and Nemesis). He's an adherent to, and pioneer in the evolution of, the structuralist view of Nazism and Hitler, the idea that the Nazi state and ideology was more important than any one personality contained within it (including Hitler himself) and is therefore really relevant to modern ideological discussion on right wing thought :shifty: .

I'd just like to say that that wasn't intended as a dig at all. It's more, if he's absorbing right wing politics through the PewDiePipeline, he might find more informal delivery easier to absorb. A lot of left wing content on YouTube can sadly come across like a bit of a lecture, and it does put off a certain audience, whose primary purpose on the site is to be entertained, and for a long time, right wing voices have been much better at weaving their politics into entertaining, and often not strictly related, content.
