It's a sad day chaps. At the ripe old age of 51, I can no longer read small print in documents when a foot or so from my face.
I've taken to wearing a pair of glasses (found them on a wall) now which make everything that distance away crystal clear, although everything else is a blur.

I wear glasses to see, if I don't wear them everything further than a few meters away is blurry as hell.

I hope you mean you went to the opticians. Go get a pair that are your prescription.

I have slight issues with my right eye at certain distances but my left is fine.

Had a major eye operation when I was 5 to repair the muscles behind both eyes. I've had to wear glasses my whole life. Still have mild astigmatism in one eye but the other one does most of the heavy lifting.

All things considered my eyesight's not bad compared to how bad it could have been. The doctor's were saying I might have been partially blind apparently, so I'm thankful they did a decent job.

What the?!?! Mommy  . As Qikz suggested, go pro, dude!

I had both of my eyes operated on when I was six; I'm not sure of the exact details but it was something to do with weak eye muscles - pretty much like what Imrahil had! Was okay afterwards but started wearing glasses when I was about 18 and at work using screens, and nowdays I have to wear glasses for both short distances (reading and computer screens) and longer distances (playing games on my living room TV and watching football).

My eyes have deffo gotten worse these past few years and I should get another check-up. Glasses can be quite expensive, though, and right now I'm wasting money on video games instead.

No, seriously, I found them on a wall by my work. I thought they were magnified because the detail on the palm of my hand was excellent. Turns out my eyes were on the wain then... :?

What you describe is most likely (read: is) presbyopia - a natural phenomenon occuring in your late 40s-early 50s where your lens no longer changes shape like it used to so you can't accommodate to read small print close up anymore. The solution is reading glasses - these can be bought over the counter so wearing ones you found on a wall isn't as crazy as people may expect (I mean it is a little bit eccentric but not absolutely batshit!). Having said that, you should be attending an optician every 1-2 years as a general rule (even if you feel your vision is perfect) to make sure that you are correctly refracted for both near and distance and that any more serious underlying ophthalmic conditions or those which may require treatment (e.g. cataracts, glaucoma, macular degeneration) can be monitored and referred into a clinic if needed.

When patients come to my clinic and say the optician is too expensive I tell them that they can take their prescription from the optician and shop around. Glasses can be phenomenally expensive if you go for varifocals with all the coatings, but on the other hand places like Glasses Direct exist and may be cheaper (I cannot comment on quality as I've never personally used them).

Extremely short sighted and have been for years. Without glasses I can see, maybe 2cm in front of my face. I'm not allowed to go on rollercoasters (not that I would) or do bungie jumping or anything like that because there's a risk my retinas might detach. Also, if I have consistent floating spots in my vision I've been told to go straight to A&E because it might be indicative of something more serious. I was told this a few years back now so I don't recall why, maybe another retina issue. Years ago I looked (ha!) into having laser surgery and was told that my eyes were so bad that even with their best treatment (at £3000 per eye) I'd still have to wear glasses and my eyes would just get worse again. Getting glasses is expensive and frustrating, I have to pay to have the lenses thinned otherwise they'd be huge, bottle thick lenses and to make sure I can get them as thin as possible I have to have very specific frame style (essentially, long and narrow). This stops me from trying anything different and is very limiting. Plus it's hit and miss whether the store brand frames meet that criteria so I often have to buy designer frames which puts the price up. And every time I go to the opticians I have the same argument with the sales/reception people about how I should wear contact lenses despite the fact I have no interest in them. It happens Every. Single. Time. I've even overheard her talking to the optician before I go in trying to get them to push me towards contacts.

On the upside, my eyesight is so bad I get free eye tests so, y'know, silver linings and all that.

Timely topic as I had my first ever eye test this weekend. The stuff they used to look at your eyes is cool as strawberry float, dat picture of the blood vessels and retina cross section :datass:

Apparently my eyesight is generally great but with a slight difference between the left and right. I was advised on some verifocals which I went with and I should have them in a week. Actually amazed my eyesight wasn't terrible considering my design job entails intensely staring at a screen all the time.

Eye floater in my left eye, which on a sunny day is a nuisance. Had an eye test last year and the irony is my eyes are in perfect health.

Ta for the info, Dowb. I've been going to Specsavers for years now and they're generally pretty good; it's always super-hectic but everything gets done okay. I'm not so keen on these places where you just send off the details; I like to try on different glasses and get them adjusted so that they're comfortable.

I had a test two years ago and my eye sight is perfect, tbh probably better than whatever normal is. I just see things nobody else sees. I have scotopic sensitivity, so need sunglasses out most of the time, but I can see and read in the dark. Moonlight for example is like late evening to me. My brain seems wired to pick up colour and detail to an insane degree which suits my job as a commercial artist. I often get preoccupied with things like textures, grain in wood, textiles etc so I just stare at gooseberry fool all the time.

The irony is sometimes seeing everything yet nothing is a pain as its hard to focus on what's actually important at the time. I do worry about losing this as I age because I think it makes my life more interesting even if its hard to concentrate at times. I think it's genetic. My mum cannot stand bright lights and it's almost like there are no lights at all inside her house. They're all very low K, downlights, lamps etc. She never has the ceiling lights on. If I remember right my grandfather on the other side also used to draw and paint watercolour by a dim lamp and spent most of his time indoors, besides gardening.

I'm a retinal screener/grader. Patients with diabetes need yearly retinal photography in addition to their optician checks as they're at higher risk of retinal disease. I do those tests and assess the images.

I can see what you mean about the aftercare with the online sellers. I investigated using them when I wanted a narrower pair of glasses for my Oculus to make things more comfortable, but I ended up just getting used to my regular frames. I try and use it as an example to encourage optician attendance with my patients. Opticians have a bit of a bad reputation for pressured upselling and costing patients a lot of money that they don't have (especially now!). We want patients to attend for the ophthalmic testing to get timely referrals for eye diseases that we don't screen for - this is free for people with diabetes so I like to make it clear they can decline getting glasses if they are happy without them (obviously this may be complicated if they want to drive and need (new or updated) glasses for that).

The platformer with the colour change mechanic? It's definitely on PC too, not sure about consoles. And it's fantastic

No, I love (heart) Hue, different game, just putting colours in the right place.
