Uhm... :shifty: ... I started Souls II, played the opening half-hour and enjoyed it - albeit found it to be very tough. After a bit of discussion here in GR, most folk felt that I'd be better off tackling Bloodborne and Souls III before playing Souls II.

Which I will do, but I haven't gotten around to really kicking off Bloodborne yet. I have it on my gaming "to do" list, though... so hopefully "soon".

I still think Souls 3 will lose some impact if you've never played Souls 1.

Go on, just buy Souls 1. Treat yourself. You deserve it.

I did kinda wonder about that, Karl. But, to be honest, it'll probably take me years to play through Blood', DS III and DS II, let alone throw another pretty heavy-duty title into the mix :-).

Bloodborne is a fantastic game and I'll probably fight for its place as best Soulsborne game.

As for the Dark Souls series, I'd say III benefits massively from experience in I, but not so much that it's ruined for not playing it. They'll namedrop a few characters here or there and a few quests are references, but it's still pretty easy to follow otherwise.

II is pretty much standalone. They try and link it to I here and there but they don't know how they want to handle it and don't want to step on Miyazaki's toes so everything feels too safe and obscure. It's still a great game, but possibly the weakest of the 5 games, probably tying with Demon's in comparing lore/story to early game jank.

DS1 is just the best one simply. Well, of the Souls series.

And done. Jumping straight into NG+ which pretty much tells you my thoughts.

You were thinking: "I haven't got all the achievements yet"?

I haven't NG+ed any of these games yet. But then I've only finished Dark Souls and Bloodborne. I'm more likely to buy DS3 after finishing 2 but I would really like to NG+ Bloodborne soon.

I've been playing this as a member of the Covenant of Champions. What I didn't realise, until now, is that this makes the game even harder.

Damn! I just read that illusory walls aren't opened by hitting them in this game. Now I'm going to have to go back through everywhere looking for them as I've seen so many notes pointing out hidden areas that I thought were just lying to me! Oh well, will be good to farm some souls and will hopefully breeze through most places once I leave the covenant of champions.

Yeah, this takes the Doom approach to secret areas. The Ruin Sentinels arena is full of them.

By the time I finished fighting the Smelter Demon, Iron Keep was almost completely empty of enemies as I'd killed them so many times.

I think I'm probably getting there  I'm avoiding the smelter melter for the time being and just trying to get to the next bonfire. I was pretty much there when I lost my 70k. It still hurts now. Can't wait to get work over with so I can jump back on and get revenge.

Which bonfire are you heading to? After you get past the bridge with the turtle knocking it down there's one if you head through the door to your left, it's actually in Belfry Sol but works as a stopgap to the other one. On my second two playthroughs I just bypassed it and headed straight for the main boss one, but I found it handy on my first go.

Quick heads up, if you do kill the Smelter Demon watch out going back into his room.

God damn, I must've missed that bonfire. I walked straight past that door. I died in the tight corridor with a turtle and guillotine. There were messages on the floor indicating a nearby bonfire. Then I died trying to run past everything getting back there.
