I seem to recall that when I first managed to beat the gargoyles it was because I went in very hard on the first guy so he was practically dead by the time the second was active. There was only a short period of overlap where I was fighting both of them and by focusing on killing off the first quickly I could then have much more freedom to take down the second one!

You often have to do certain things to unlock them, the characters form part of the story, etc. I think if I could go back and convince myself "NPC summons are OK" I would. If not for the Gargoyles, then definitely for some of the latter bosses...

I don't really know anything about the summoning function and you've highlighted an aspect I wasn't aware of, Karl - you can summon NPC (computer) characters to help? I may look further into that... albeit, yeah, I want to duff up these two gargoyles in solo if possible!

Ad7 wrote:...Iirc, you can use the slope of the roof to hide from the flames if you're lucky...

I think I did use that mechanism once or twice yesterday, Ad, albeit unintentionally! I'm getting better at running / rolling away from the flames but the real killer is, whilst you're doing that, quite often the other gargoyle thinks that is a great time to attack you :x  .

Ad7 wrote:...Also, try not having the shield at all and two handing your weapon but use light attacks.

Matt has been coaxing me into trying two-handed attacks and I've got a couple of hits in using that style, but the timing is hard as it's a little slower. My style is quite defensive and I currently use the shield a lot; I just need to get better at only holding it up just before a strike comes in, or else I'm unnecessarily using up stamina.

Definitely, Jen! I am steaming into the first 'goyle to try and get it's energy low quickly; the second gargoyle seems to appear once the first one has taken 50% damage. It's crucial to find a brief window(s) to use the Estus Flask prior to tackling that second one!

If it's the flame attacks getting you, do you know the tell? Can't remember exactly off the top of my head, but don't they become rooted to the ground, sort of make an inhaling noise and rear their head back at bit?

I seem to remember being able to roll back to safety fairly easily, so keep enough stamina. I think when there's one of them, as counter as intuitive as it seems at first, if you roll forward you often avoid attacks and get in a good position for a counter hit. Bloodborne taught me that, whereas in DS, players are often to quick to try and prg it backwards and raise their shield.

The attacks are pretty well telegraphed.

The axe attack will either be Vertical or Horizontal and it's easy to see which it is and move accordingly. Same for the flame attack. They root to the spot and start to draw breath for a moment. Which is the cue to get out of range, or get to the side/behind them where you can do some damage.

Going in hard on the first one is key as it minimises the time you spend fighting both. When it's down to one on one it shouldn't be too difficult.

I think the second one spawns when you the first to half health right? And the second one only has half health too?

I've just beaten Lud and Zallen from DS2 (those bastards were the last ones I needed to do in the entire game too) and my tactic was to get the first one's health almost to the point where it spawns the other. I then backed off, did any healing I needed and powered up my weapon with fire (I think the gargoyles are really weak to lightning, like a lot of enemies).

That way you are ready to be aggressive when the second one spawns, hopefully getting rid of the first one or near enough killing it. Having full health enables you to tak a hit if you need to trade it for a killing blow and the lightning will take their health down faster.

The other thing I may have done was use a halberd. It allows you to poke from a safer distance and also the horizontal sweeps can sometimes hit both (and stun lock them for a second).

I'm never sure if you guys are helping or leading me down a dark path... :shifty:  .

I do plan on tackling Souls again later this afternoon but I may not stream 'cos I know that some of you will be bored with the constant "jawa vs gargoyles (again)" battling.

Me and Karl are helping. Matt on the other hand...

Dare I say that not streaming may take some of the pressure off too.

I'm unsure... I've quite gotten into streaming and I think it has encouraged me to play and persevere more than I may have; I feel like I have got quite far into the game* 8-) . The gargoyles are a sticking point, though, and I don't want folk to be bored by the repetition.

* I know I haven't, really.

Jawa you have to stream buddy. HAVE to. You cant deny us the victory! Also this is what Dark Souls is and its not boring to watch you try. Honestly. It is probably way waaaaaaaaay more boring for you to play it over and over then for us to watch over and over.

Seriously you are doing really well and you can beat them.

Yeah, I think you tune into a Dark Souls stream with the expectation that it might involve doing the same bit multiple times. The fun is in watching someone get better.

Which you absolutely are, jawa!

Thanks, guys. I just wouldn't want anyone to think they had to stay on the stream for a long time; I'm happy when folk just come and go as they please!

Anyhow, I'm feeling good about progressing into the world of Souls and guys here in GRcade have played a big part in propelling me along that journey  .

Hey, just a bit of notice that I plan on streaming the next episode of Souls at 16:15 (UK). Will post a link in the streaming thread at that time.
