Never heard it called a "gaping dragon" before but hey, what you get up to in your own time is up to you. ;)

What do you call it? :?

Well I call mine "The Destroyer" but that's just me. :datass:

just to be clear - I was making a wank gag. ;)

Good work, Hypes! That was a tricky boss and its jumps can be a pain.

Yeah he can be a prickly beast, well done Hypes.

Are you planning on getting back on the Souls Train today Jawa?

I sure am! I'll be around from mid-afternoon and I plan on streaming from 15:00 (UK).

I'm in Londo and will start by climbing the tower and then travelling down to that Onion knight... and try to tackle the group of knights in the room by him. After a few goes at that, I'll get back to O&S :dread: .

The room with the Silver Knights doesn't have anything important I don't think, but it may progress Seigfried (Onion Knight) to his next location.

Don't get too hung up on O&S. I can see you getting stuck there and just drifting away to something else.

If you can't beat them in your next few sessions, then I really think you should summon. At least Solaire, but another player can be helpful as well. They're still a tough boss fight, but they are a bit more manageable. Don't let them be where you hit the wall with this game.

I'm not going to lie, I'm actually a little bit annoyed that Matt has convinced you to play some kind of hardcore "No Summoning" game as you're handicapping yourself and locking off a big part of the game. There's "Git Gud" and there's this.

Oh and get your online connected so you can at least see messages and bloodstains. It's like you're playing half the game.

Whilst I enjoyed my "no summon" play through on this I would say that this is good advice - give them a good few goes before going down the summon route but I don't think banging your head against the wall indefinitely is worth it when summoning is an option, particularly if it keeps your game going!

I didn't really miss the messages and bloodstains to be fair though, my experience of them in DS3 was more people making jokes and trolling with the messages more than anything (putting a message in front of a female NPC with something like "try rear approach" and the like :fp: ) Also bloodstains seemed to not even work half the time.

Also I did like the sense of isolation I got from my solo+offline run, it added to the atmosphere a lot in my view. I played the opening sections of DS3 the other night and it was quite off-putting seeing all these white outlines of players just running around everywhere!

Yeah this was bad advice and I dunno why it’s been treated as gospel. Missing out on a lot not playing online.

Messages are such a big part of the Dark Souls experience for me. The biggest message meme in the game is directly after O&S as well.

Hey, no worries, guys - I may seek the help of Solaire or another player in the future but I'd like to battle first. I can also see the fun in the messaging system but, at this point, I enjoy the eerie atmosphere and the sense of being alone. I've got through the challenges so far and, although O&S seem to be particularly tough, I know that defeating them is possible.

In getting to this stage, I feel like I've traveled way beyond where I'd thought I'd reach. Each time a challenge appears, it has felt too tough and I'd wondered if I may stop. But by teaming up my determination with the power of your encouragement and help, we have got through it.

This stage feels to be the toughest obstacle yet. With most games I'd chuck it in and play something else, but Souls has exerted a grip. It's harsh, occasionally cruel and yet progress is so rewarding.

Beating O&S was one of my best gaming moments, don't give up on it.

You seem to think that Summoning = Guaranteed Win, or that it's somehow cheating or a lesser victory. That is absolutely not the case. You still need to beat them and they are still a difficult fight even with the summon to help you.

I'm going to stop banging on about it now, because Matt has somehow convinced you that using summons is against the whole point of the game, but you're genuinely making things much harder for yourself for no good reason. Ultimately it's your choice, I just don't want to see you get needlessly frustrated and abandon the game to meet some standard that you absolutely don't need to meet.

Yeah summoning is in no way a guaranteed win. In fact often if you get paired with some Moran, it can really strawberry float you over. Usually an npc summon will.serve as a nice distraction but they will die very quickly. A human summon will either be great and fight with you (rare) or just try to be a hero, storm in with a heavy weapon and get battered immediately.

Had a cool session! Progress points:

> Duffed up the silver knights for the onion knight guy
> Learnt about the parry function; very useful albeit the timing is tough to get right
> Made two good* runs against O&S at the end of the session

* "Good" as in I got a few hits in on Ornstein and survived for a while

Have you played at all since this? Don't drift away man, you're doing great. Once you get past O&S there's nothing you can't handle!

Jawa, don't summon anyone. Matt will not be nice about it, even now I get gooseberry fool for getting help on Bloodborne.

I may give O&S another go soon, though.
