Lol @anything other than strength

I've started as a Knight, put a few points into strength and endurance so far but I dont know what I'm doing so will probably just wing it.

I think most of my points went in to Dexterity followed by Strength and Vitality. Learning how to actually play the game is more important than where you put your points though!

The way I tend to play is to simply aim for the stats needed to wield the gear I wanna use. After that I usually put a bunch into Vitality, Strength and Endurance too.

I agree with <]:^D Resistance is a waste of time.

I played it hand held for most of my time, felt really good. Not sure if it is a locked 30fps but it was pretty smooth from what I recall - even some of the known bad spots from the previous generation versions like Blight Town were fine.

Curse all of you for bumping this and making me think of this game again. :x

I really want to like it. The setting, the lore, the overall aesthetic, are all something I really want to dive into and enjoy, but I strawberry floating hate the gameplay. It's a game that absolutely demands that you master it to progress, and I'm not interested in mastering it, I just want to get through it, and experience the world it's set in, but the game won't let me do that.

I just can't bring myself to enjoy replaying whole sections over and over, getting incrementally further each time. Having to repeatedly fight the same hollows every time on the way to a boss each time you die is just awful. If I've beaten the same enemy a couple of times or more, that should be enough of a demonstration that I can beat it and shouldn't have to again, but no, they appear every time I die.

strawberry float the git gud brigade, I just want this game to have an easy mode, or allow quick saves.

I strawberry floating hate racing games, making me take the same corners again and again each lap of the track. If I've made the turn a couple of times or more that should be enough demonstration that I can beat it and shouldn't have to do it again! ;)

I don't think it does demand that you "master" it necessarily, just that you respect it and reach a certain level of ability with the main systems and approach to combat.

I am playing it in handheld mode - I've only ever had my Switch docked a couple of times.

It feels really good in my hand, I love holding it and showing it to my wife. When it's sat there in your hand, or hers, you can really appreciate just how hard it is. My wife isn't a fan of holding it but that's marriage for you.

Non-context-baity - it performs really well, looks good, the text size is fine etc, I have no complaints at all.

You're being facetious, I know, but that's not actually far off the truth for how I feel about some racing games, and other genres as well.

I really like the Yakuza games, for example, but once I'm a few hours in, I don't want to do any more combat. Once I've encountered all the different enemy types, and tried the majority of the environmental weapons with special animations, there's not a lot more to get from fighting, so I'll do what I can to avoid all the optional overworld fights, so I can progress the story.

There are definitely ways to make the experience less punishing fwiw. If you start out with the Knight class and the Master Key gift, then put points into Strength and Intelligence, you'll have access to:

(Minor early-game strategy spoilers)
(More blatant spoilers are inlinespoiler'd)
  • Undead Asylum - a Broadsword <-- one of the better starting weapons
  • Undead Asylum - a good set of Heavy Armour, with decent Poise <-- to take hits without being stunned
  • Undead Asylum - a decent Medium Shield, with high Stability <-- to deflect blows without Stamina loss
  • Helpful secret #1: New Londo - extra Fire Keeper Soul to upgrade Estus Flask; it's a 30 second suicide mission down elevator below Firelink Shrine <-- much more effective healing
  • Upper Undead Burg - Havel's Ring, after Havel in the tower basement, giving medium-tier movement speed <-- lets you roll and dodge
  • Undead Parish - Balder Shield (the optimal Medium Shield), if you're willing to farm Balder Knights for the drop <-- optional; very-slightly better version of your shield
  • Blacksmith Andre - +5 Bastard Sword <-- bigger, heavier, better version of your sword, plus initial upgrade
  • Lower Undead Burg - Great Heavy Soul Arrow <-- lets you take down strong enemies from far away
  • Depths - +5 Magic Bastard Sword after getting some Green Titanite and giving it to Blacksmith Rickert underneath Firelink Shrine <-- upgrade of your sword that is very powerful early game
  • Helpful secret #2: Firelink Shrine - Ring of Favour and Protection, by kicking Knight Lautrec off a cliff <-- bonus to Vitality and Endurance
  • Helpful secret #3: Undead Asylum Revisited, via the Giant Crow's Nest in Firelink Shrine - Rusted Iron Ring <-- run even when waist-deep in water, helpful in upcoming swamps, lakes
  • Darkroot Garden - Enchanted Bastard Sword after Moonlight Butterfly, assuming you've found some Blue Titanite to give Blacksmith Rickert <-- further upgrade
  • Darkroot Basin - Grass Crest Shield <-- a different option for your shield if you find the stamina regen effect helpful
  • Darkroot Basin - Hidden Body, after the Hydra <-- lets you go invisible and skip fighting annoying mobs

(EDIT: Ah, I forgot a "Helpful secret". It's now "Helpful secret #1".)

That sounds like a lot of work, but that sequence of locations is essentially what you'd be doing in the opening of the game anyway, so it's just a matter of having the plan in mind as you play the game. It won't make you invincible, obviously, but I think you'd have all the tools to avoid the worst bullshit in the game. Particularly, you'll have good damage and a fairly forgiving attack move-set; random mobs won't lock you in stun; you'll have a good ranged option so you can pick fights on your own terms; ditto for a good stealth option; and "Helpful secret #3" makes levels with boggy terrain less excruciating.

If you're playing on PC, there's a mod that adds quicksave/quickload here: https://www.nexusmods.com/darksouls/mods/465

Obviously you'll have a very different experience with quicksaves but it's more-or-less a single-player game at the end of the day. I don't think anyone can fault you for just wanting to see the story/world.

what a pleb

;)

i think i mentioned this before, but once you see the game as systems to be exploited or navigated, rather than a challenge to be avoided, you can really enjoy it a lot more.
now if you you genuinely dont like the mechanics then the game isnt for you im afraid!

you can also work out how to run past most enemies consistently, so if youre rushing to the boss it can be pretty effortless.
not going to say i dont swear at the screen sometimes when i die unexpectedly

I played through three times and I still think it's great. I'm going to go through it again with this version soon.

But the game needs a pause button and an easy mode.

Had an up & down session this evening - binned off the Black Knight in Undead Burg and felt like a king. Then got absolutely obliterated in 1 hit by this thing down a spiral staircase - it had a massive hammer or club and it just WHAM! So that was disheartening. Avoided both of them on the next run and got up to the long top of the wall where this demon boss appeared - killed me quite quickly but I guess I have to get past him to progress so there's my next challenge.

Well that's good to know :toot:

Mafro wrote:Havel 8-)

Is he the club bastard? What a bastard :x

I actually feel quite adept at handling the more vanilla enemies, it's easy enough to just keep my kite shield up and circle round them as they do their attack routines and leave themselves exposed. Working with a battle axe at the moment, on the look out for something better (I have the Black Knight's sword but not good enough to use it yet).

Havel is a lumbering oaf, just time your movements and he's a piece of piss.
