Reminds me of a similar situation I had in a bloodborne chalice dungeon

I started Dark Souls today :D / :dread: . I played three hours this afternoon and another forty minutes just now... but I've probs got about fifteen minutes into the game :slol: .

The gothic styling is cool and I like the dark atmosphere. I'm slowly - very slowly - getting to grips with the controls and menus; it doesn't help that barely anything is explained but I recognise that is part of the appeal. Movement seems to be the real learning point - you don't have to be fast, but timing is crucial. Defence and attack has to be thought about and I spent ages flailing around. Thankfully some of the stream viewers helped me out on a few aspects  .

I eventually beat that first big baddie and I felt like a Souls Pro :toot:  . Moving on I have gotten a bit further though I struggled against a dude with a pike; I don't know how to beat him and he duffed me up about four times. Eventually I got away from him by... uhm... running. It did the trick! Then I got demolished in about two seconds by a beastie called Taurus Demon. I had to stop at that point as I was all Souls-ed out.

I am struggling a little bit with the idea of re-starting each time; it can be frustrating to keep re-doing sections just to die quickly at a challenging point. But, hey, I'm making progress and that's all part of the Souls experience.

And, yeah, I need to git gud.

Seriously though, grats on making it past the Asylum Demon. I think making it through the opening stages of Dark Souls is one of the most satisfactory things one can do in gaming, but it's not exactly a welcoming opening. Stick with it, look for shortcuts to make your life a little easier.

Thanks, man, yeah, I'm keeping an eye out for short cuts. I found some in Bloodborne but I haven't noticed any so far in Souls. Will take another look during this week!

Thanks, Karl - the game sometimes feels like a test of endurance, but it does tempt you to keep playing by begrudgingly granting little slivers of progress!

It's a bastard, no question. Doubt I'll ever finish it myself.

That's what I though as well. I'd written it off as something I'd never get into. But through endurance, patience and little bit of "where do I go now?" I finally beat it.

It's hard and obtuse at times, but it's mostly fair (Occasional bit of "through wall" jank aside).

May God have mercy on your soul.

fantastic game, enjoy :toot:

I had many a moment where I thought I'd never progress, but I got there and it was such a satisfying gaming experience

I've had my Dark Souls run on pause for the last couple of months - I got to Anor Londo and then seemed to lose momentum. I really should get back to it.

I've been playing it on Switch and I think that platform lends itself really well to a game like this - the ability to pick it up whenever and play for short bursts as well as big sessions has definitely helped me keep pushing onward where I may have given up before!
