Nipped down to New Londo to get the Estoc, then hopped through the Valley of the Drakes and down into Blighttown by the back entrance to get the Crimson Set and the Tin Banishment Catalyst. That's my weapon & armour sorted for the first half of the game. I love Dark Souls sequence breaking.

You max/min cheating mofo

Shame you look like a deranged scarecrow. (And in the game too! lololololol)

... . Yeah, regardless of difficulty, there'll always br some folk who can play it blindfolded or something! Have you tackled Souls yet, Lime?

Hyperion wrote:Yes, I'm not quite sure how you got there though, as I came from that castle with various knights that you got to. Also visited the humming onion but he didn't do anything so I left

After running past the dragon on the bridge, I battled up the stairs and sneaked past the boar. I then followed the pathways round - tackling a few knights on the way - and ended up in the courtyard by that castle.

It's cool that we can each take different pathways through the adventure :-) .

Edit: Yeah, I saw silver onion guy, too; but he didn't seem to want to move.

Looks rather hard for my abilities, Jawa. :) Also I'm enjoying it indirectly via your streaming!

We're in the same location at the mo', Hypes! I saw that demon but he looked super-tough (double fire balls :o ) and so I went the other way instead; up into the courtyard and castle to face various knights.

Yes, I'm not quite sure how you got there though

Its called a youtube video guide Hypes. Thats how he got there. :x

I only looked up that bonfire because I didn't want to die (again!) after *finally* beating those two knights  .

Was that the thing that I used to do something (I don't know what) to the Estus Flask?

Same, I really can't afford any new games right now but this thread is tempting me to get the remastered trilogy.

Just had a pretty cool session!

I duffed up the three knights in the "church" area, wandered out and opened the gate by the boar area, went back and took down the other knight on the stairs, cleared out the horde of skeletons and then defeated Zappy Man! I was well chuffed :toot: . And Hyperion witnessed it so I'm not making this progress up  .

Then I met Bell Gargoyle :dread: . I put up a valiant fight and got a few hits in but it took me down. It was quite funny as I ran down the narrow walkway beside the building at the end of the roof as I thought that may be a safe spot... and it just stood there and flamed me :slol: . :x .

Incredible scenes, incredible game.

If you want to see the action described, the vid is available to view on Twitch (for 14 days!).

Bless, Jawa, he still seems to think there's only one Bell Gargoyle in that fight.

He probably shouldn't highlight that spoiler. Or go and play Dark Souls 2 and deal with about five of them.

Talking about DS2, I'm just on the Iron Passage. The real Dark Souls starts now.

EDIT - Also, when fighting the Fume Knight (different game, I know), I realised that playing Bloodborne first basically conditioned me to dodge all the time. I never use my shield, unless it's to protect against surprises going round corners or in to the unknown.

I read criticism of DS that you could basically turtle your way through it from being a shield, and the developers even make a joke about it in Bloodborne.

Does anyone else basically just up their stamina, lower their equip weight and rely solely on dodging? It's especially effective in DS2 due to ADP increasing your i-frames.

... . Blimey. Uhm... this sounds like it's gonna be super-tough.

I've worked out how to export Twitch vids to YouTube so I've uploaded my last session:

While I respect you going it alone have you considered summoning help? There are NPC summons that can help immensely with some bosses if you are struggling.

I'd never go without a shield in DS. I always try to dodge but use my shield first till I get a feel for an enemy or deal with groups. Ultimately dodging is the best tactic because 2 handing a weapon is more efficient. Plus aint no strawberry floating way I'm trusting any game that can do this- https://clips.twitch.tv/SweetTacitOwlCoolStoryBro

Yeah, I guess I could, Salads, but I kinda want to power my own way through. May end up seeking help, of course  .

I do want to have another crack at it. Gotta wash-up now but I'll stream again from 1900; my stream should fit in before the other guys then start streaming at around 2100 :-).

Bell Gargoyles is the point where most people give up. To be fair it is a pretty significant difficulty spike, the game is much more straightforward from that point until you hit Sen's Fortress

Was fun to watch you playing Jawa! :D

I had another go in my run-through earlier as well. Beat the Taurus Demon, got the Drake Sword from the Hellkite's tail, went down to the basement of the watchtower and got Havel's Ring, then took a little detour through the Darkwood Basin to get to Andre. Explored the Parish, killed the boar, upgraded some weapons (used a +3 Estoc for a bit, now swapping between a +5 Bandit's Knife and a +5 Balder Side Sword). Rang the first bell. I'm a bit overlevelled so I'm toying with the idea of skipping the Depths and just going straight to Blighttown (via the New Londo shortcut), but I'll have to have a think about whether there's anything there I need.

I got duffed up by the (first) Bell Gargoyle again... but I found a different route and ended up in a garden area. I ran past a couple of giant knights, went up some stairs and came-face-to-face with a big flying insect  . I got duffed up again as my melee weapons barely hit the thing. Was fun though! Thank you to the folk who joined the stream, chatted and provided a couple of tips  .

Oh, yeah, I did call out some - as Matt (TWA) calls it - "BS". When I went back up to re-tackle the Bell Gargoyle, it was literally just the other side of the entrance point and smashed me immediately. It was crazy!

Ah, nah, I've only had a few play-throughs (and I've never actually got to the last boss, I always fizzle out!), but I've also watched it on Twitch occasionally! It's pro streamers like yourself that taught me all the tricks! :toot:

I really loved this game, reading all your adventures is bringing back so many vivid memories.

I love firelink shrine, it gives me such nostalgia just thinking about it. I genuinely want the music at my funeral. Plus maybe a guy dressed like the forlorn knight so sit outside.

If I remember rightly the Bell Gargoyle has quite wide sweeps with its weapon right?

I'm anti-shield but I think if you try to take the hit whilst shielded, you're going to be struggling to keep your stamina at a by decent level. You should be able to dodge around it so you're attacking it's best. Just don't get greedy with hits - get two in at most before backing away.

The overhead smash is fairly easy to avoid as it's so slow, and gives you a chance to get in. Eventually you'll learn the boss enough that you aren't just dodging away, but dodging in a way that gets you closer to it for a hit.

If you're having trouble, just go in to the fight with zero souls and nothing to lose, and practice avoiding his attacks. Very few fights are DPS races - though in this fight, that will have its benefits later and instead if you can survive, you can usually live long enough to deal the damage. If you're consistently getting hit or if you don't know when it's safe to heal, you'll find yourself getting cut down.

Second phase:

..is all about a manging two enemies at once, which is going to be an important skill across all the games. Be patient and wait for their attacks to line up so you have an opening. Try and focus on the same gargoyle instead of splitting damage, as it's much easier when you're back to one. And try and deal as much damage before the second one shows up.

The other thing is, if you're having trouble, the first half of the game is open-ended enough that you can go elsewhere and do some levelling first.
