Thanks for the tips, Parksey! When I return to the white smoke entrance to the rooftop now, the Gargoyle seems to be immediately on the other side and whacks me as I'm arriving. Classic Souls! :x .

I was using a battle axe, then a lance but Matt said that's a bit ropey, so I've switched to a long sword. I have got the halberd which seems more powerful but also a bit slower.

I'm currently on the Black Knight Sword and it's working quite well for me. Though I'm pretty sure I ended up with a Lightning Claymore on my last playthrough.

Either way he's far enough in that he can potentially pick a decent-ish weapon and start upgrading it a little. More damage on the Gargoyles will definitely help as he wasn't doing much with his axe.

Yeah, I could try and pick-up some souls and then upgrade a weapon at the blacksmiths. Will look to do this the next time I play.

Make sure it's a decent weapon though. No point in upgrading something gooseberry fool.

Ah! Uhm... I'll check to see what I have and then post to see what is worth upgrading :) .

Also make sure it scales with your stats. Melee weapons will be affected by your Strength and Dexterity stat, as well as their scaling grade for each.

It's probably best to build a specific sort of character rather than just splitting your stats across everything.

I am amazed no one has advised him to get the Drake Sword, or is that frowned upon in these parts as cheating?

+1 for Black Knight Sword, I struck lucky and got one very early (it did involve some pre fix Bottomless Box chicanery to summon in Undead Burg) and once I was strong enough to use it I don’t think I used anything else beside bows.

Hearing Jawa's exploits has made me realise that I really need to get back to this - I think I probably put about 30 hours into it and then got distracted!

I basically spunked most of my upgrades into my Battle Axe which has served me very well up to now - it deals a lot of damage and seems to be great for staggering enemies and breaking their defense when they are blocking. I'll probably find out that I've strawberry floated myself over good and proper and the axe is shite for the rest of the game now!

Yeah I got lucky and it dropped quite early on. So just pumped souls in to the stats I needed to actually use it and it's been a machine since then. Currently got it +2 so it made quick work of the Gargoyles and Capra Demon.

I think they ruined it a little in DS2 as you needed a few points in Faith if memory serves so I never used it.

Jawa has the Halberd btw and I used that for effectively the whole game. Scales well and its actually a very good teaching weapon too as if you miss an attack you recover quite slowly. Really helped make me learn to be more patient and precise. But it depends on what he feels comfortable using. (actually that reminds me of a bug bear I have with these games is that you have to put a lot of time into grinding just to be able to try out weapons)

The Bell Gargoyles are right banana splits. I've never bought into the idea they are meant to teach you to fight multiple enemies at once because well, you have already fought groups. The other famous 2 creature boss fight is far faaaaaaaaaar better designed. It is a complete damage check boss fight though because as soon as they gang up on you your chances of winning are about 1% if you cant deal damage at a good enough rate.

The second phase of Bell Gargoyles is pretty terrible. I actually like them a lot as an individual enemy, they have a cool moveset, but the both-at-once phase really needed a better arena than the rooftop. If the roof had collapsed and you'd fallen into a bigger, more interesting (with some pillars or something) room it would be a better fight.

I always found the Gargoyle fight a little lazy as it's kind of a rehash of the Maneater battle in Demon's Souls. If you didn't play that game then for comparison imagine the Gargoyles fight only on a bridge similar but smaller to where you fight the Taurus Demon
