I don't feel beating her is miles beyond you Jawa. That go when you just kept attacking for about 10 mins with less then half health was really good. Apart from, you know, having less then half health when she hit you.

One thing you have certainly got better at is that when you do heal you are getting the timing right. You were getting smashed around a lot when trying to heal and it happens a lot less to you now. :D

Just for clarity, I have tons of " " for everyone who has been interested and helped during my Dark Souls adventuring so far. I probably wouldn't have stuck with the game otherwise and now here I am becoming a fan of the game :toot: .

I plan on streaming again this afternoon at 15:00; I will spend the time repeatedly tackling Quelaag to try and learn her movements and identify what does and doesn't work well as a response. I will totally understand if folk give this session a miss as it'll probably be wearisome to watch the same fight for ages. In those cases, I'll shout once she has been defeated and we're exploring that dragon area again!

Working then. :( But trust me it wont be wearisome to watch. If its wearisome its mainly because it is wearisome to have to keep walking back from the bonfire which isnt your fault. I did like your idea that the game should let you create saved set ups to switch between so it was less of a faff to keep swapping btw.

Also! You can explore the swamp more (its quite big) and did you ever beat that butterfly?

That wasn't aimed at you in particular Matt, more the overarching attitude you see on the other places.

I thought so. And yeah that attitude is not helpful.* I try my best to explain my views and I hope it makes sense. In this context my concern is that if Jawa summons then later on he struggles more then he should (bless him for persisting after firekeepersoulgate) and it could stop him.

*Look at the reactions to things like the assist mode in Mario or Funky mode in DK. The issues should not be about them being in the game but how they fit in. I like the optional items you can buy in DK. I've not played Celeste yet but my understanding is that its a game that has masses of options for making it easier. But makes it clear how they designed it to be played. This I like also.

I'm really happy Jawa is getting into the game. It made me sad that he clearly loved a lot of what BB had to offer but couldn't face playing it. Its why I've long championed for an easy mode in Souls games.

Wow that was a long post

I wasn't trying to have a go at you Matt for what it's worth. Sorry if I came across a bit strong.

I do wanna address this bit:

Alas I'm going to have disagree with you here. The fact that its hidden behind the hollowing system and requires a resource and then you have to find the spot tells me otherwise. The first time I saw a summoning sign was in Sens Fortress. Which is what? A 3rd of the way into the game? I had little idea what it was or why I could see it. The fact Jawa, if he decides to summon, is going to have to ask how to do it again tell me the opposite. Heck in this case in order to do it he had to be told to go hollow to fight her in the first place. And even after doing so the game gives you no indication that she will be around to summon later. So many hoops the player has to jump though. I just cant agree the game encourages it. I'd imagine most players just go about the game hollow because there is no real reason to be human. So dont see them. Its what happened to me.

The intro to the game is all about it though.

You arrive at Firelink Shrine and there's, like, ghosts sitting around the fire! What is that? Am I connected to other players somehow? You start seeing messages and they're clearly different to the developer ones: some are funny, some are helpful, some troll you. One of the bad ones has a bloodstain next to it, and you watch the clip of a different, more unfortunate player and realise ah, I guess I shouldn't Try Jumping after all. Then you reach the Male Undead Merchant and he sells you the Orange Soapstone, whose description reads: "Messages transmit to other worlds, where they are rated. Also, rate messages of others. In Lordran, the flow of time is distorted, and messages allow Undead to assist (or deceive) one another." Aha! I understand now!

A little while later, you meet Solaire, who is such a huge part of the game. He's given this brilliant, iconic introduction, and he tells you about summoning in such a memorable way: "So, what do you say? Why not help one another on this lonely journey? Use this, to summon one another as spirits, cross the gaps between the worlds, and engage in jolly co-operation! ...I am a warrior of the sun! Spot my summon signature easily by its brilliant aura. If you miss it, you must be blind!" The item description of the White Soapstone he gives you says: "Leave summon sign. Be summoned to another world as a phantom through your sign, and defeat the area boss to acquire humanity."

Solaire then pops up periodically to remind you about summoning, and generally be a ray of light in the dark world. If you do the Hydra before Quelaag - which Jawa didn't but many players might - and then kill the Golden Crystal Golem, you free Dusk of Oolacile, who can only be talked to & bought from by summoning her. She says as much in her dialogue: "Then, I shalt engrave my signature. If thou art in need, pray summon me from my signature."

I'm not saying the link between all that lore and the actual game mechanics - reverse hollow then find a signature near a boss door - is necessarily obvious, but I think the game gives you enough to be very curious about! (It wouldn't be Dark Souls without a bit of experimentation or getting hints from other players to join the dots together!)

Literally all the covenants are based around summoning too.

Summoning has its place but I do feel that it's more rewarding to solo a boss. I endeavoured to do so on my playthrough of 3 after doing so in 1 but summoned for a few in 3 because I wanted to press on with the game. My aim is to try a NG+ or reroll when I have more free time to tackle the game solo.

I'm still yet to summon so I get the TWA thumbs up for my approach so far!

That said I do think I'm missing out by playing entirely offline - no helpful messages has made a couple of things harder than it might otherwise have been - with Seath for example I imagine there are messages helping you realise you should take out the crystal thing before you can hurt him?

Either way I got up to Lost Izalith after another fun session last night, took down a couple of bosses on the way: some kind of fire demonand a lava centipede. The former was easier than the latter although neither were too tricky compared to some earlier bosses. Izalith seems a bit dull so far - lots of those rock statue things which don't prove much or a challenge to fight, although I've been avoiding all of the things that look like dinosaur skeletons in the lava!

Oh and adiós Solaire - why did you turn on me dude?!

So for those not watching Jawa, this is representative of the experience.

We've all been there.

Iirc I really struggled on that fight, then just tried a random faster weapon and managed to do much better.

Well played, Jen - you're ahead of me at the mo'! Such a cool experience, isn't it?

 . That was so painful... she had just one little bit of energy left! My patience was tested to the extreme there!

But... I have defeated Quelaag! Solo'd it :toot: . I was fortunate to have fantastic support from the stream viewers and their cheering made me resolute in facing down the boss! Man, after a tough session yesterday, it felt so good to finally win :D .

And then we wandered into a new area... which was awesome :o .

Edit: The video is now up on YouTube; the successful run starts at the 1 hour 30 minute mark!

Guys, I wonder if maybe, just maybe, Jawa might actually complete this. If he's built his character efficiently, levelled up an appropriate weapon and has solo's all the bosses so far, I'd say there's probably only one location and boss that might cause him trouble. Even then he could probably summon and get through it.

Well done Jawa. You did very well. Got unlucky at points (shitty lava hotboxes and that floating one lol) and you also made some terrible decisions but you damn well got gud.

Your biggest issue was it was like you had to relearn what you did vs a bell gargoyle. If you break down what Quelaag can do it's really not that different.

Oh and GG Devlin.

Absolutely. I think it was on the moment he beat the gargoyles properly. There's no reason why not.
