It did help that it was possible to have Mega Man’s blaster gun and a clown sized chainsaw that would literally never break though, if you knew how to play the game properly.

I’d go as far as to say that the original Dead Rising is one of my ten or fifteen favourite games, it’s absolutely outstanding.

DR1 was great, the time mechanic was a fundamental part of what made it such a good game and people who disagree are arseholes. ;)

So this is...ok?

Seems odd that only 1/2 the mall shops are enterable (asuming as there's more outside the mall around willamette)

Are side missions gone? I keep getting "encounters" but none of the rescue survivors with identity/personality from first games?

Maniacs are new psychos right?

Not a fan of the most dangerous think in mall being numerous "hostile survivors" as an enemy type

The mall is just the start of the game really. It opens up a lot more when you get outside. It's not a bad game at all, it's just that it's easily the weakest of the series for reasons like the ones you've already clocked. If I remember rightly, side missions are indeed gone and the maniacs are rubbish.

I still think DR2 (with Chuck) is my favourite. The original feels really stale without the combo weapons.

3,4,2,1 is how I'd rate them. 1 was amazing at the time but it's so clunky.

3 had ridiculous zombie numbers, combos that could be powered up 3 times to super weapons and it had psychos.

4 has a strange mech armour upgrade thing. It's fine. Very playable with the Christmas theme and DLC Christmas elf outfits for all the zombies. Removed the timer completely which is great but has a terrible ending.

I barely touched the mech suit, thought it was rubbish.

How far in are you Hexx? More areas in the mall are searchable later in the game as stuff opens up.

And yes, you’re right in all your assumptions. No side missions, only encounters which, in the scheme of things, don’t *really* matter.

I'm still on Case 1 and heading to the front and just did my first, unless there's one I've missed, Maniac. Didn't even have a cutscene intro.

I'm enjoying it don't get me wrong, but a lot does feel like it's been cut out for "sandbox" fun.

I knew some of the risks going in but just wanted to check I'd got it right. I still like 1 and 2 for their locations/setting. 3 was mechanically better but too big for entire area to have identity - worried this will have same flaw when out of mall (even the mall doesn't seem to have as much character in the "corridors of shop", although the main areas are still good.

Do you go back to areas later? I've done the Mall and Mainstreety thing and gone off to Westside.

I've cleaned out the first 2 areas and the game seems to be moving to a new area each time with a clean breaj

You do, but don't spend as much time in them as I think you probably should do. The majority of the later game is in the third and fourth areas.

Cheers.

I'm enjoying it - but in retrospect I think I'd prefer DR1/2, and should have tried OTR over this.

It's an open world action brawler. I was amazed how quickly you left the mall (half the shops being empty makes more sense now).

I think I'm just disappointed the sense of "identity" place from DR1/2 has gone. The malls felt like characters/real places.

The lacklustre maniacs really add to that to

On the other hand, Mech Suits.

Eco Suits?

What’s the point of then? You run out of energy quick and seem to waste time looking for a ‘purple’ item

They are good for getting lots of XP, just need to time the use of them to the right area and also know where the power ups for them are. Worth investing in the skill tree to make them last longer.

Nah, those suits are naff.

I'm really tempted to replay DR2 OTR thanks to this thread but my conscience is telling me I need to play one of my newer games instead of replaying yet another oldie :(

The mech suits are fine I suppose but I’d definitely have preferred a lot more in terms of maniacs and probably a smaller but more detailed world.

Really hating leveling up the safe houses in this.
Tieing it random events seems horrific. I can not get up Old Town's level as every event I encounter is smash the equipment

What format are you playing on? Just wondering how it runs on PS5
