Deathloop by Arkane Studios and published by Bethesda was announced at the PlayStation 5 event in June. It's an action-adventure set on a sixties-era inspired island of Blackreef. You play as Colt an Assassin. Every day is one long party for the guests that resets at night with almost everybody not remembering a thing about what happened the day before. However Colt does remember and must use that knowledge to track down and take out eight targets - however his nemesis Julianna is trying to stop him. It's a console launch exclusive which likely means it will come to other formats but nothing has been announced yet.

Deathloop transports you to the mysterious island of Blackreef, where an eternal struggle between two extraordinary assassins will determine the island's future. As Colt, you must find a way to put an end to the timeloop trapping the island in an endless cycle, all while being hunted by the island's inhabitants. Using your powerful weapons and abilities, you'll need to take out 8 key targets across the stunning, yet chaotic, island before the day resets in order break the loop once and for all. But lurking in the shadows is rival assassin Julianna whose sole mission is to take Colt out and keep the loop going. Learn from each cycle, try new paths and approaches, and break the loop.

Each new loop in Deathloop is an opportunity to learn from the past and adapt. Finding clues and uncovering hints is key to taking out targets before the day resets. Discover relationships, learn schedules, and do whatever must be done to gain the necessary knowledge. Players will apply what they've learned in previous loops to try different paths, choose to sneak or attack, and devise other new strategies to eventually reach their targets. If at first you don't succeed… die, die again.

The time-loop death mechanic can work well and blended with the action and the island's unique setting and I will say my attention has definitely been piqued! The developer video mentions unique features for the DualSense and the fact that this is currently slated to be released before Christmas and it looks like Deathloop might be a launch title, certainly something unique to play at the start of the new generation.

As a big Arkane fan I'm very much looking forward to this, hadn't realised it was out this year either which is a bonus!

Looks amazing, the blink mechanic lifted straight from Dishonored is a good move imo. Using it in a more fast paced FPS should be excellent. I'll have to wait till the timed exclusive malarky is up before I play it though.

New Arkane game with a time loop mechanic? I'm in.

We should migrate GRcade to Flarum. :toot:

How does Dishonored 2 compare to the first? It's one game I always tell myself I need to check out but I never do.

Dishonored 2 is brilliant in my opinion, builds on the excellent foundations of the first game and expands them in many wonderful ways.

The new powers added for Emily are great, the expanded size of the levels makes exploring even more fun, they added more things to do in the levels so it feels much more involved and rewarding and it features some of the best level design I have seen for a good while.

Basically if you like the first game then I don't really see how you couldn't like the sequel!

It's brilliant. I never did play as Emily though, so need to do that at some point.

Emily is definitely worth a play through, encourages some very different ways of tackling things when you start to realise the way her powers can be used/abused!

Death of the Outsider, the standalone swan song for the series, is also very worth a look. It's a more condensed experience but still contains the same excellent mix of ingredients that made the main games so good.

I started Dishonored 2 but don't think I was in the right mindset for it at the time. I absolutely loved the first game and played it through three times. I don't think it helped that I started 2 by immediately refusing the powers because I really enjoyed my no powers ghost run of Dishonored - I should probably play through with them first and not immediately jump to no kills no alerts

Yeah going straight in for a no powers run is going to make things tricky. But it is a hell of an experience to do that once you know the lay of the land!

2 also introduced some nice tweaks you could make to the difficulty which allowed you to adjust guards perception to visual and audio stimulus - I really liked the option to fiddle with this and make the game more of a challenge.

There's two levels in particular which are among the best I've ever experienced in any game, which have that arkane level of detail which makes them believable places, even though they're pure fantasy.

I'm really looking forward to this but I'm fine with a delay so they can squeeze more out of the PS5.

I think that's a really cool idea, I was intrigued to see what sort of things people would come out with for the new controller tech and that seems like a clever use of it!

That sounds very cool, didn't realise that was a possibility!
