Look at the Tendency tab in the menu. If the Archstone for a particular world is glowing brightly then you're into white world tendency. To shift a world toward white you mainly need to kill bosses but not die yourself. If you kill all the bosses in a world but never die in that world then you should be well on your way to pure white world tendency. It's actually a little more complex than that but that's the gist of it.

Try this website http://demonssouls.wikidot.com/

It's an excellent (likely the best) source of information on anything and everything to do with Demon's Souls.

Thanks although I have just finished it. Dark Souls arrived today so may play that more as it's more recent with more people playing

Nice review, although I don't know if you realise this but you can kill the first boss (The Vanguard) it just takes a little practice (or playing as Royalty if you're me). You get a bunch of items in the next area and a cool cutscene as a reward.

I notice he isn't in new game plus?

On first playthough if you are new to the game you wouldn't know this would you?

True, this game tells you nothing. It's like being a child again and discovering the world for the first time. Learning through trial and error.

I reckon you're meant to think Vanguard is unbeatable but the devs obviously knew that someone would manage to beat him eventually so they hid a pretty cool reward for those who managed it. Very clever if you ask me.

BUMP!

So, after posting in the Currently Playing thread that I decided to give this another go, and getting encouraged to keep at it, i've just had another session today. I'm still at what I assume is right at the beginning in Boletarian Palace. I still don't *get* it that much to be honest, but i'm getting further with each attempt. I've got both gates open now, and am at a stage when i've got either some knight thing with a orange face on one path, or two dragons on another. Naturally i'm trying the path with the knight but he's absolutely abusing me every time I go towards him. I don't really get what to do next. I just went back to the Nexus place after I died and that dude I saved is sitting there now but beyond that I can't see anything different. Do I have to kill either that knight or the dragons?

Also, i'm absolutely terrible at the parry/attack thing. I pull it off one attempt every twenty so i've stopped bothering with that now. Any advice on improving with that?

I think i'm playing a Knight class or something along those lines.

I can't advise you on where to go as I haven't made much progress in Demon's but in Dark I don't parry. Just roll away and strike when the enemy isn't blocking or you're fast enough to get behind it.

Have you fought the Phalanx yet?

This thing?

I've not seen that before. I've seen a couple of things that look similar that hit you with a spear which have a weak point on it's back, but i've not seen one of those.

Yeah, first aim is to find and beat him.

Also, see if you can track down a pdf of the strategy guide that came with the special edition. It'll help you get through the first few levels and give you tips on weapons, bosses and leveling up.

I'll have a search for that then. I've got no idea where that dude is then, there is two gates that are both locked near the starting area, one straight to the left down some stairs and another one which is the big one at the far end of the castle. No idea on how to get either of those gates open at the moment, but I must have missed a lever while I was running about somewhere. I'm still not even sure what souls are for for example, I know it's the currency, and I know you lose them all when you die but do they do anything beyond that?

They level you up. Talk to one of the people in the nexus.

Right, so kill everyone I can before I think i'll die then go to the Nexus before I lose them all? I already wasted like 2.5k's worth of souls buying some Plate armour assuming it'd be better for me but when I put it on, it ended up being worse than what I had and I can't sell it back to the dude. :fp:

One other question actually, is it worth breaking all the environment stuff that's about? I've not found anything in any of them yet but will keep going if it's worth looking through.

Told my wife she could have a quick go while I was eating my dinner. She's made her own character and finished that castle since then. :| My wife's better at games than me.
