Well games has been £50 for years. Games development has becoming longer. I got the feeling that a price hike is coming soon. And it has.

£70 is a lot to bite I’ll admit. I was expecting £60. But then £70 isn’t new. Remember Turok on the N64? £70.

And I was a very disappointed teenager. I saved up £70 and Turok turned out to be a bag of boring shite.

When titles become more numerous it will become a choice of margin over volume, or vice versa. I think the margins will be to the detriment of volume, if this shift is significant, I can easily see an adjustment in prices.

I think if you died while invading in Demon’s Souls you actually lost a level? Wonder if that’s still the case

There was that False King boss that had a move that de-leveled you as well which was cool.

Yea, games being £40-50 at launch has been standard since the Gamecube days. I too remember £70 N64 games but I remember the price being driven down to about £50 by the end of its lifespan and that seemed to set the bar for the next 20 years. But £70 in 1997 is more like £130 by today's money.

Even a £50 game in 2000 is more like £85. I've said for a while that I think one of the reasons that predatory microtransactions and DLC became so commonplace was that clinging to a £40 price tag as standard for nearly 2 decades meant that margins got so slim that you ended up with companies having to sell stupidly high volumes to make it worth it - hence stagnation and homogenisation of the AAA market.

If £70 upfront gets us back to actual games in a box rather than being bombarded with 'season passes' and other gooseberry fool then I'd pay it.

Of course, it won't be like that because now those things are out of the bag no company is going to stop using them. But they'll sting a bit more if the upfront cost is higher which might discourage them.

I get the inflation and costs argument but publishers have far more ways of making money from game’s nowadays and the market is much bigger. Plus the micro transactions and DLC stuff Skarjo goes into above.

Even if it works out to be more like 60, that’s still 20 more than most people are used to paying for a game on release and I just can’t see how they think people will stump up for it.

Trying to think what games I’ve bought this year, what I paid and whether I would pay 60 or 70...

Doom - 39 / No / No
Resi 3 - 43 / Yes (but would be very pissed off) / No
Last of Us - 49 / Yes / Probably Yes begrudgingly
Ghost of Tsushima - 49 / No / No
Tony Hawks - 35 / (I guess this would be 50 but still) No / No

I’m just one person but spend more on games than anyone else I know (not including here), I don’t know where they think they’re recuperating these sales from or if they care.

Still my whining is probably for another thread, Demon Souls does look banging and I’m annoyed I can’t afford to play it.

You didn't lose a level per se but if you died in human form your would switch to phantom form where you'd have smaller health meter but you'd do a little more damage.

In addition every time you died in human form in a level would sway the alignment of that level from neutral toward black. The further toward pure black alignment the level became the harder it would get and different enemies would spawn and different events would transpire.

Conversely every time you killed a boss the world alignment would shift towards white and the closer to pure white alignment the easier the game would become and again different events would trigger.

EDIT: Wait, sorry didn't read that properly. I didn't know you lost a level if you were defeated while invading

That'll probably convert to £90, too. The price of games for next gen is hugely deterring (for me personally). I can see why Game Pass could quickly become a standard way of gaming for plenty of folk.

strawberry floating ridiculous.

I hope they're all prepared for massive reduction in game purchases this gen.

The strawberry floating gall to charge £70 for a game and still pull this gooseberry fool.

Has Jim Sterling done an episode on next gen prices yet?

Not specifically I dont think. He has done this and covered the next gen upgrading in Control BS.

Be interesting to see if he covers this pre-order stuff given his love for the Souls series. I've not played DS but I assume some of those items are in game currency which is EXP and thus give preorder players a boost.

Paying for consumables in a strawberry floating souls game :fp:

Has there been any hints that the 6th archstone has been repaired for this? Would be a cool thing to have done but kept quiet.

Not a Souls expert by any mean, so some of this could be way off:

The 3 soul items = 1 time use items which you can consume to spend on any of your stats. They may also have an alternate use, but I forget what that is...

The 2 shards = 1 time use upgrade to weapon quality

The 3 grain items (new to this remake) = Not sure, but likely to be 1 time use items, or limited multiple use if it's a stack of each item, or limited duration weapon buff items

The ring = it could be permanent gear you can wear/take off at will, or it could be 1 time use gear which breaks upon death

I can't remember if DS had player stat requirements for weapons and shields. Meaning, you may have two weapons and a shield which you cannot equip unless you spec your character in particular ways.
